Analytical Study on the Influence of Rib Beams on the Stability of RCC Dome Structures

    Get PDF
Dome systems are space structures which cover a big area with minimum support. It is a doubly curved shell structure. Dome is stronger, stable and sturdy than any other singly curved shell structures which are relevant to many civil engineering structures like an auditorium, exhibition hall, industrial structures, pinnacle protection of ground water tank etc. Modern concrete shell domes can be constructed to the ratio (thickness-to-radius) of 1:800, using concrete and wire mesh and they are safe, aesthetically pleasing and long-lasting. The main aim of this study is to analyze the behaviour and strength of modern-day thin spherical shell domes made of concrete with and without rib beams using finite element technique with the help of SAP2000 software. The work consists of the erection of round domes with a massive diameter of 50m, 100m, and 150m with and without rib beams and a shell thickness of 15cm. Analytical study on all models was performed to study the influence of the big diameter and thickness of shell dome on stress distribution

Mobile Data Services Usage: An In Depth Investigation Of The Influence Of The “Personal Layer” Of Place

    Get PDF
The new mobile networked environments ask for more investigation in order to explain users’ behaviour and users’ low demand for mobile data services. A field study, conducted in the territory of Greece, researched the use of a specific mobile data services platform, called here as Service A trying to identify how users experience place before deciding to use mobile data services. The findings of the research tend to suggest that participants did experience the different places in a similar way before deciding to use mobile data services. The study adopted the humanistic geographical perspective as represented by the four “layers of place” introduced by Yi-Fu Tuan’s theory. The findings presented in this specific paper highlight the strongest patterns coming from the analysis of the “Personal layer” of place as represented by Tuan that are important influential elements in the decision of the users to start using mobile data services . The contribution of this paper is that it argues that the users’ decision to start using mobile data services is influenced and triggered by their interaction with their surrounding environment and thus there is need to consider the role of this environment in the study of adoption and use of mobile data services

Does Pluralism in Economics Education Make Better Educated, Happier Students? A Qualitative Analysis

    Get PDF
This paper contributes to the debate on pluralism in the economics curriculum. Here pluralism means a diversity of theoretical perspectives. One set of pedagogical arguments for pluralism are those found in 'liberal' philosophy of education. To this end, the first part of the paper presents arguments for pluralism based on 'liberal' pedagogical arguments. The paper also notes more instrumental arguments for pluralism and the barriers to such an approach. Finally, the paper considers new primary evidence from focus groups on student perceptions of economics. This evidence shows support for the arguments that a pluralist curriculum is popular and develops cognitive capacities of criticism, comparison and analysis – exactly those argued for in (liberal) pedagogical discussion – as well as judgement, understanding and writing skills. However, pluralism as a teaching strategy may be more difficult for those delivering it.

CASE STUDY ON SAFETY MANAGEMENT IN CONSTRUCTION SITE: Proposed 40 units 3-Storey Shop Office & 4 Units Of 2-Storey Shop Office

There have been significant reductions in the number and the rate of injury over the last 20 years or more. Nevertheless, construction remains as the one of the high risk industry. The purpose of this study is to examine safety management in the Malaysian construction industry, as well as to highlight the importance of construction safety management. The industry has contributed significantly to the economic growth of the country. However, when construction safety management is not implemented systematically, accidents will happen and this can affect the economic growth of the country. This study will try to put the safety management in construction project as one of the important elements to project performance and success. The study will focus on construction project in Malaysia. The study will also emphasize on awareness and the importance of safety management in construction project. The data will be collected by doing the questionnaire and a case study. The analysis of the survey will be done by using the Relative Importance Index (RII) and Cronbach's alpha using SPSS software. The scores were then transformed to importance indices based on the formula

Stress, coping and life satisfaction: a study among reserve officer training unit (PALAPES) and police undergraduate voluntary corps (SUKSIS) of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak

    Get PDF
Stress and coping are important variables that strongly related to each other and life satisfaction is the other element corresponds to both variables. This study examined the relationship between stress and coping strategies namely problem focused and emotion focused strategies and life satisfaction. 150 respondents were randomly selected from Kenanga college of University Malaysia Sarawak. Respondents completed a set of questionnaire of Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), Coping Strategies Inventory (CSI-32) and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). Result indicated that female experience more stress than male respondents. Stress has a significant relationship with problem focused strategies and this study recorded that there was no correlation between stress and life satisfaction. Multiple regression tests was carried out to test which coping strategies influenced life satisfaction and the result shows that students use emotion focused strategies as their ways of coping

Enhancing Presentation via Bluetooth™ Technology in Higher Educational Institutes

    Get PDF
This paper is intended to present a project in introducing a new generation of wireless technology, Bluetooth™ to the higher educational institute and its future perspectives in Malaysia. One question arises, how Bluetooth™ technology can benefit educators to deliver their knowledge presentations in the feasible and easiest ways? Consequently, the short-range wireless connectivity technology lets electronics devices automatically recognize, connect and transfer data between each other. This technology is aimed high in eliminating wires and cables between both a handheld device and personal computer (PC) through the Bluetooth™ USB Dongle. Moreover, it is also purposely done to deliver better service for lecturer to control slide presentation. The information for the project is being acquired through the research on the Bluetooth™ specifications and some methods are being carried out from time to time in area of observation, preliminary information gathering, data collection through questionnaires, data analysis and simulation development in the methodology which is required to achieve its goal. The architecture and simulation of the transmission between a Bluetooth™ enabled handheld device and a PC facilitated with a Bluetooth™ USB Dongle will be proposed to represent the project. This study's conclusion denotes that wireless technology is essential in enhancing presentations delivery that can help a better communication between lecturers and students

Exploring optimum percentage of fly-ash as a replacement of cement for enhancement of concrete properties

    Get PDF
Researchers and decision makers are continuously looking out to determine the potential and effectiveness of fly-ash as a partial replacement of cement in concrete. The current study is carried out to check the optimum or nearly optimum quantity of fly-ash with which cement should be replaced to get most of the properties of concrete enhanced and to give the idea about the quantities of fly-ash that can be used in a better way and better cause so that a proper management scheme of its usage and disposal can be implied. Further, a comparison is given between normal concrete and fly-ash concrete to show the properties which can be enhanced by proper utilization of fly-ash as a partial replacement of cement. After carrying out the lab experiments, it has been seen that the replacement of fly-ash in concrete has resulted in general increase in compressive strength, flexural strength and splitting tensile strength up to 15% replacement and after then the strength is decreased considerably than that of normal concrete. Addition of fly-ash in concrete has resulted in decrease in the water absorption of concrete and hence decreases in permeability of concrete. There is a progressive increase in workability with increase in percentage of fly-ash in concrete. The current study has led to a conclusion that in order to achieve best results in use of fly-ash concrete, the fly-ash used for replacing cement in concrete should have the required properties as specified by the standards and proper techniques of processing fly-ash as well as mixing of fly-ash with cement must be employed
