Theory of Computation of Multidimensional Entropy with an Application to the Monomer-Dimer Problem
We outline the most recent theory for the computation of the exponential
growth rate of the number of configurations on a multi-dimensional grid. As an
application we compute the monomer-dimer constant for the 2-dimensional grid to
8 decimal digits, agreeing with the heuristic computations of Baxter, and for
the 3-dimensional grid with an error smaller than 1.35%.Comment: 35 pages, one pstricks and two eps figures, submitte
Constraints on Mirror Models of Dark Matter from Observable Neutron-Mirror Neutron Oscillation
The process of neutron-mirror neutron oscillation, motivated by symmetric
mirror dark matter models, is governed by two parameters: mixing
parameter and mass splitting . For neutron mirror
neutron oscillation to be observable, the splitting between their masses
must be small and current experiments lead to GeV and GeV. We show that in mirror universe
models where this process is observable, this small mass splitting constrains
the way that one must implement asymmetric inflation to satisfy the limits of
Big Bang Nucleosynthesis on the number of effective light degrees of freedom.
In particular we find that if asymmetric inflation is implemented by inflaton
decay to color or electroweak charged particles, the oscillation is
unobservable. Also if one uses SM singlet fields for this purpose, they must be
weakly coupled to the SM fields.Comment: 10 pages and 2 figure
The Protestant ethic and modernity - comparative analysis with and beyond Weber
Alternative ways of modernisation: comparison of individual societies as nation states in 19th and 20th century Western societies
Is transport in time-dependent random potentials universal ?
The growth of the average kinetic energy of classical particles is studied
for potentials that are random both in space and time. Such potentials are
relevant for recent experiments in optics and in atom optics. It is found that
for small velocities uniform acceleration takes place, and at a later stage
fluctuations of the potential are encountered, resulting in a regime of
anomalous diffusion. This regime was studied in the framework of the
Fokker-Planck approximation. The diffusion coefficient in velocity was
expressed in terms of the average power spectral density, which is the Fourier
transform of the potential correlation function. This enabled to establish a
scaling form for the Fokker-Planck equation and to compute the large and small
velocity limits of the diffusion coefficient. A classification of the random
potentials into universality classes, characterized by the form of the
diffusion coefficient in the limit of large and small velocity, was performed.
It was shown that one dimensional systems exhibit a large variety of novel
universality classes, contrary to systems in higher dimensions, where only one
universality class is possible. The relation to Chirikov resonances, that are
central in the theory of Chaos, was demonstrated. The general theory was
applied and numerically tested for specific physically relevant examples.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Supernova Bounds on the Dark Photon Using its Electromagnetic Decay
The hypothetical massive dark photon () which has kinetic mixing
with the SM photon can decay electromagnetically to pairs if its mass
exceeds and otherwise into three SM photons. These decays yield
cosmological and supernovae associated signatures. We briefly discuss these
signatures, particularly in connection with the supernova SN1987A and delineate
the extra constraints that may then arise on the mass and mixing parameter of
the dark photon. In particular, we find that for dark photon mass
in the 5-20 MeV range, arguments based on supernova 1987A observations lead to
a bound on which is about 300 times stronger than the presently
existing bounds based on energy loss arguments.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, minor typos corrected, version to appear in NP
