Reionization constraints on primordial magnetic fields
We study the impact of the extra density fluctuations induced by primordial
magnetic fields on the reionization history in the redshift range: . We perform a comprehensive MCMC physical analysis allowing the variation
of parameters related to primordial magnetic fields (strength, , and
power-spectrum index ), reionization, and
CDM cosmological model. We find that magnetic field strengths in the
range: nG (for nearly scale-free power spectra) can
significantly alter the reionization history in the above redshift range and
can relieve the tension between the WMAP and quasar absorption spectra data.
Our analysis puts upper-limits on the magnetic field strength nG (95 % c.l.) for , respectively. These represent the strongest magnetic field constraints
among those available from other cosmological observables.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 9 pages, 6 figure
The aromatic amino acid hydroxylase genes AAH1 and AAH2 in Toxoplasma gondii contribute to transmission in the cat
The Toxoplasma gondii genome contains two aromatic amino acid hydroxylase genes, AAH1 and AAH2 encode proteins that produce L-DOPA, which can serve as a precursor of catecholamine neurotransmitters. It has been suggested that this pathway elevates host dopamine levels thus making infected rodents less fearful of their definitive Felidae hosts. However, L-DOPA is also a structural precursor of melanins, secondary quinones, and dityrosine protein crosslinks, which are produced by many species. For example, dityrosine crosslinks are abundant in the oocyst walls of Eimeria and T. gondii, although their structural role has not been demonstrated, Here, we investigated the biology of AAH knockout parasites in the sexual reproductive cycle within cats. We found that ablation of the AAH genes resulted in reduced infection in the cat, lower oocyst yields, and decreased rates of sporulation. Our findings suggest that the AAH genes play a predominant role during infection in the gut of the definitive feline host
SAGE: Sequential Attribute Generator for Analyzing Glioblastomas using Limited Dataset
While deep learning approaches have shown remarkable performance in many
imaging tasks, most of these methods rely on availability of large quantities
of data. Medical image data, however, is scarce and fragmented. Generative
Adversarial Networks (GANs) have recently been very effective in handling such
datasets by generating more data. If the datasets are very small, however, GANs
cannot learn the data distribution properly, resulting in less diverse or
low-quality results. One such limited dataset is that for the concurrent gain
of 19 and 20 chromosomes (19/20 co-gain), a mutation with positive prognostic
value in Glioblastomas (GBM). In this paper, we detect imaging biomarkers for
the mutation to streamline the extensive and invasive prognosis pipeline. Since
this mutation is relatively rare, i.e. small dataset, we propose a novel
generative framework - the Sequential Attribute GEnerator (SAGE), that
generates detailed tumor imaging features while learning from a limited
dataset. Experiments show that not only does SAGE generate high quality tumors
when compared to standard Deep Convolutional GAN (DC-GAN) and Wasserstein GAN
with Gradient Penalty (WGAN-GP), it also captures the imaging biomarkers
accurately
Squeezed States and Affleck Dine Baryogenesis
Quantum fluctuations in the post inflationary Affleck-Dine baryogenesis model
are studied. The squeezed states formalism is used to give evolution equations
for the particle and anti-particle modes in the early universe. The role of
expansion and parametric amplification of the quantum fluctuations on the
baryon asymmetry produced is investigated.Comment: 8 pages 9 figure
Brain activity forecasts video engagement in an internet attention market
The growth of the internet has spawned new “attention markets,” in which people devote increasing amounts of time to consuming online content, but the neurobehavioral mechanisms that drive engagement in these markets have yet to be elucidated. We used functional MRI (FMRI) to examine whether individuals’ neural responses to videos could predict their choices to start and stop watching videos as well as whether group brain activity could forecast aggregate video view frequency and duration out of sample on the internet (i.e., on youtube.com). Brain activity during video onset predicted individual choice in several regions (i.e., increased activity in the nucleus accumbens [NAcc] and medial prefrontal cortex [MPFC] as well as decreased activity in the anterior insula [AIns]). Group activity during video onset in only a subset of these regions, however, forecasted both aggregate view frequency and duration (i.e., increased NAcc and decreased AIns)—and did so above and beyond conventional measures. These findings extend neuroforecasting theory and tools by revealing that activity in brain regions implicated in anticipatory affect at the onset of video
Estimation of Cosmological Parameters from HI Observations of Post-reionization Epoch
The emission from neutral hydrogen (HI) clouds in the post-reionization era
(z < 6), too faint to be individually detected, is present as a diffuse
background in all low frequency radio observations below 1420 MHz. The angular
and frequency fluctuations of this radiation (~ 1 mK) is an important future
probe of the large scale structures in the Universe. We show that such
observations are a very effective probe of the background cosmological model
and the perturbed Universe. In our study we focus on the possibility of
determining the redshift space distortion parameter, coordinate distance and
its derivative with redshift. Using reasonable estimates for the observational
uncertainties and configurations representative of the ongoing and upcoming
radio interferometers, we predict parameter estimation at a precision
comparable with supernova Ia observations and galaxy redshift surveys, across a
wide range in redshift that is only partially accessed by other probes. Future
HI observations of the post-reionization era present a new technique,
complementing several existing one, to probe the expansion history and to
elucidate the nature of the dark energy.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
