    Get PDF
This display is based on the undergraduate course, “History through Film.” Our purpose is to further the use of film and other visual sources in history teaching and research. With the rise of “Public History” and “Visual Anthropology,” Visual History (also termed Image History) is a new post-modern development, arising only in the late 20th century. It originated in Europe and developed rapidly in the United States, but remains still in its infancy in China. Maybe UB students would enjoy this, too

Achieving Online Relationship Marketing via Tourism Blogs: A Social Network Perspective

Drawing upon the literature on social network analysis, this research examines how part-time marketers use tourism blogs to conduct relationship marketing with their customers. The findings from an interpretive case study indicate that the network pictures of part-time blog marketers can be categorized into three distinct models: the “fan club,” the “compliance,” and the “creative outlet” models. Our findings also suggest that different network pictures lead to different network management strategies for blogs. Moreover, providing instrumental support and especially material support by blog marketers play significant roles in aggrandizing this transitivity, which helps to attract more visitors to blog sites. We believe that the innovation and the potential connections derived from the individualistic styles of some bloggers and the hedonic emotional support given to tourism blogs should not be overlooked. Our findings also indicate that more incentives and freedom should be provided to tourism business bloggers in order to prosper in their grassroots use of technology. The 2004 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey was administered to American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) adults in Nevada to determine whether health disparities exist between AI/ANs and the state’s general population. Results showed AI/ANs were 1.5 times more likely to smoke cigarettes, 3.5 times more likely to be exposed to secondhand smoke, 3.2 times more likely to lack leisure-time physical activity, 9.7 times more likely to report fair/poor health status, and 7.7 times more likely to have a disability. In addition, AI/ANs were more likely to have current asthma (OR=5.0) and diabetes (OR=1.8). AI/AN women were 4.8 times as likely to report no Pap test in the past 3 years. Our findings suggest that Nevada’s AI/AN population face many health disparities related to risk behaviors, poor health status and health conditions, and healthcare access. Partnerships among tribal, state and federal public health systems are needed to address these disparities

Unpacking the Network Pictures of the ICT industry in Taiwan

This study analyzes how a developmental state fosters its ICT industries through the network alliances among a boundary organization and ICT industries. The cooperative networks of ICT industries play a strategic role for the national development in a global networked economy. We argue that different network pictures lead to different managerial strategies and capabilities. Drawing on studies of network pictures, this study details an interpretive case study in a major semi-government sponsored ICT marketing research institute in Taiwan. We explore the relationships between this boundary organization, ICT businesses and their dynamic networking relationship. The findings highlight how the inertia of network pictures stabilizes value creation activities and capabilities in the boundary organization, thus limiting it opening to a more radical future-oriented strategic network
