Empirical models are used to measure sales losses experienced by frankfurter brands following a recall for a foodborne pathogen. Recalled brands experience a 22 to 27 percent sales decline after a recall. Brand recovery occurs within 4 to 5 months after a recall. PRODUCER WELFARE CHANGES FROM MEAT AND POULTRY RECALLS

The number and volume of meat and poultry recalls has increased substantially in recent years. This is likely due to regulatory emphasis on foodborne illness resulting in an increased frequency of testing for pathogens. We use an equilibrium-displacement model to examine the effects of recall costs on the beef, pork, and poultry industries. Results suggest that higher recall costs may have actually increased producer surplus to the broiler industry because of consumer substitution among products and that most losses resulting from recalls are accruing to the beef and pork industries.Agribusiness,

Household Expenditure Patterns for Carbohydrate Sources in Russia

This study provides a unique view of the demand for carbohydrate sources in Russia at the household level. The data used in this analysis were obtained from a 1996 survey in eight Russian metropolitan areas. An almost ideal demand system (AIDS) model is used to examine the expenditures for potatoes, bread, flour, rice, and pasta. CHANGES IN MARKET EQUILIBRIA RESULTING FROM FOOD SAFETY REGULATION IN THE MEAT AND POULTRY INDUSTRIES

This study presents a unique view on the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS) implementation of the so-called "Mega-Reg" authorizing establishment of regulatory hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) procedures. Surveys were sent to plant managers of the 11 firms participating in the HACCP Roundtable at the University of Arkansas. Results of the survey were used to create HACCP implementation cost estimates for poultry kill plants and perform welfare analysis by using equilibrium displacement model (EDM). Results show average welfare losses up to 35 million a year for the broiler industry as well as substantial losses to consumers resulting from the new regulation

WELFARE LOSSES FROM FOOD SAFETY REGULATION IN THE POULTRY INDUSTRY

Results of surveys sent to plant managers of eleven firms representing 25 percent of the U.S. broiler volume were used to estimate HACCP implementation costs for poultry kill plants and to perform welfare analysis.
