    Technological Factors Implementing Informatics Support Tools for RIOS Net, an AHRQ Practice-Based Research Network

    The Research Involving Outpatient Settings (RIOS) Network is an AHRQ Practice-Based Research Network in New Mexico composed of clinicians practicing in Community Health Centers, Indian Health Service/Tribal facilities, and University of New Mexico academic settings. We are creating a standardized term-based research data repository to support all RIOS Net research projects and to support future research/data-mining of the accumulated data. Because many of the networks 200+ members are located in extremely remote areas, access to the internet or even basic computer equipment is often very limited.     Concepts and action : where does the embodiment debate leave us?

    The behavioural evidence of sensorimotor activity during conceptual processing, along with that from neurological research, ignited the debate around the extent to which concept representations are embodied or amodal. Such evidence continues to fuel the debate but it is open to interpretation as being consistent with a variety of the theoretical positions and so it is possible that further, similar evidence may not lead to its resolution. In this paper we propose that independent value accrues from following this line of research through the enhanced understanding of the factors that influence agents’ conceptual processing of action and how this interacts with the agent’s goals in real environments. This approach is in line with broad principles of embodied cognition and is worthy of pursuit regardless of what the results may (or may not) tell us about conceptual representation

    The moving window of fit: extending person-environment fit research with time

    Person-environment (P-E) fit research considers the match between individual characteristics and environmental characteristics (e.g., jobs, organizations, vocations). Most P-E fit research considers person and environment at a moment in time. However, this contemporaneous view overlooks the potential impact of an individual's past and future. We can more meaningfully portray the relationship between P-E fit and outcomes if we consider experiences from the past, present, and future. The inclusion of these three time frames produces a "moving window of fit" that can be developed by incorporating research on the temporal nature of the person, the environment, and well-being. In addition, to determine how these elements of a temporal fit model are related, I consider research on the processes of contrast and assimilation. To conduct an initial test of the temporal P-E fit model, I consider a needs-supplies fit framework that focuses on four job dimensions: autonomy, creativity, pay, and work relationships. Using a sample of 187 working MBA students, I found that P-E fit relationships become more complex when using a temporal context. Namely, how individuals view fit at past jobs and future jobs conditions the effects of current fit. In addition, the impact of several of these relationships depends upon several moderators: temporal focus, temporal distance, and importance. As a result of these findings regarding the moving window of fit, I discuss implications for practice and for future research

    Evaluating the High School Lunar Research Projects Program

    The Center for Lunar Science and Exploration (CLSE), a collaboration between the Lunar and Planetary Institute and NASA s Johnson Space Center, is one of seven member teams of the NASA Lunar Science Institute (NLSI). In addition to research and exploration activities, the CLSE team is deeply invested in education and outreach. In support of NASA s and NLSI s objective to train the next generation of scientists, CLSE s High School Lunar Research Projects program is a conduit through which high school students can actively participate in lunar science and learn about pathways into scientific careers. The objectives of the program are to enhance 1) student views of the nature of science; 2) student attitudes toward science and science careers; and 3) student knowledge of lunar science. In its first three years, approximately 168 students and 28 teachers from across the United States have participated in the program. Before beginning their research, students undertake Moon 101, a guided-inquiry activity designed to familiarize them with lunar science and exploration. Following Moon 101, and guided by a lunar scientist mentor, teams choose a research topic, ask their own research question, and design their own research approach to direct their investigation. At the conclusion of their research, teams present their results to a panel of lunar scientists. This panel selects four posters to be presented at the annual Lunar Science Forum held at NASA Ames. The top scoring team travels to the forum to present their research in person

    Place-based Politics and Nested Deprivation in the U.K.: Beyond Cities-towns, ‘Two Englands’ and the ‘Left Behind’

    ‘Place-based explanations’ of politics in the U.K. tell sweeping narratives about ‘Two Englands’, or of sizeable regions of the country that have been ‘Left Behind’, reinforcing popular accounts of a North–South or city-town divide. We introduce the concept of nested deprivation – deprivation that may occur in just one housing estate or even one row of flats within neighbourhoods that are otherwise affluent. We report on intensive fieldwork in 8 neighbourhoods varying in relative affluence and density of population (including urban, suburban/satellite, market town or rural village). Three key themes and consequences emerge for those living in nested deprivation in relatively affluent and geographically dispersed contexts: (a) either disconnection from or entrapment within the local economy; (b) social isolation and atomisation; and (c) powerlessness to affect politics. ‘Place-based’ explanations of rapid and radical changes to political participation in Britain need to take fine-grained geographical distinctions much more seriously. Our study provides evidence that the rising tides in affluent areas are drowning some residents rather than lifting all boats. Where deprivation is dispersed and then nested within mostly affluent constituencies it does not allow for the political mobilisation among communities of interest that is a necessary condition for pluralist representative democracies

    Mining the bitter melon (momordica charantia l.) seed transcriptome by 454 analysis of non-normalized and normalized cDNA populations for conjugated fatty acid metabolism-related genes

    Abstract Background Seeds of Momordica charantia (bitter melon) produce high levels of eleostearic acid, an unusual conjugated fatty acid with industrial value. Deep sequencing of non-normalized and normalized cDNAs from developing bitter melon seeds was conducted to uncover key genes required for biotechnological transfer of conjugated fatty acid production to existing oilseed crops. It is expected that these studies will also provide basic information regarding the metabolism of other high-value novel fatty acids. Results Deep sequencing using 454 technology with non-normalized and normalized cDNA libraries prepared from bitter melon seeds at 18 DAP resulted in the identification of transcripts for the vast majority of known genes involved in fatty acid and triacylglycerol biosynthesis. The non-normalized library provided a transcriptome profile of the early stage in seed development that highlighted the abundance of transcripts for genes encoding seed storage proteins as well as for a number of genes for lipid metabolism-associated polypeptides, including Δ12 oleic acid desaturases and fatty acid conjugases, class 3 lipases, acyl-carrier protein, and acyl-CoA binding protein. Normalization of cDNA by use of a duplex-specific nuclease method not only increased the overall discovery of genes from developing bitter melon seeds, but also resulted in the identification of 345 contigs with homology to 189 known lipid genes in Arabidopsis. These included candidate genes for eleostearic acid metabolism such as diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 and 2, and a phospholipid:diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1-related enzyme. Transcripts were also identified for a novel FAD2 gene encoding a functional Δ12 oleic acid desaturase with potential implications for eleostearic acid biosynthesis. Conclusions 454 deep sequencing, particularly with normalized cDNA populations, was an effective method for mining of genes associated with eleostearic acid metabolism in developing bitter melon seeds. The transcriptomic data presented provide a resource for the study of novel fatty acid metabolism and for the biotechnological production of conjugated fatty acids and possibly other novel fatty acids in established oilseed crops.</p

    Age, Growth, Diet, and Reproductive Biology of the Tripletail, Lobotes surinamensis, From the North-Central Gulf of Mexico

    Tripletail, Lobotes surinamensis, are migratory fish that occur worldwide in warm seas, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. In the north-central Gulf of Mexico, tripletail support small recreational and commercial fisheries from April to Oct. and are commonly caught in bays and estuaries. Few studies have evaluated the life history and biological characteristics of tripletail; therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the age and growth, reproductive biology, and diet of tripletail caught off coastal Alabama. Our primary goal was to use life history information to determine. a minimum size limit for harvest. A secondary goal was to compare the results of our study with those of previous tripletail studies. A total of 119 specimens, ranging in size from 293- to 763-mm total length (TL), were collected from recreational anglers and from a wholesale seafood dealer between May 1998 and Aug. 2000. Female specimens were significantly longer and heavier than males. Total length varied greatly with age, although significant overlap in lengths was observed among ages. Age ranged from 0.87 to 4.09 yr. No male was older than 3.15 yr of age, whereas five females were estimated to be more than 4 yr old. Fifty percent of females reached sexual maturity by 494- to 594-mm TL and approximately 1 to 2 yr of age. All males greater than 380 mm were sexually mature. Diets were composed primarily of penaeid shrimps, various pelagic fish species, and portunid crabs, with the proportion of fish consumed increasing with tripletail length. On the basis of the results of this study as well as previous research on the life history and population dynamics of tripletail, the state of Alabama implemented a 406 mm (16 inch) minimum size limit for this species. This size limit is below the female size at 50% maturity (19.5-23.5 inch) and should be increased if large increases in fishing pressure occur

    Movement of Red Snapper, Lutjanus campechanus, in the North Central Gulf of Mexico: Potential Effects of Hurricanes

    Site fidelity and movement of red snapper, Lutjanus campechanus, were estimated from a tagging study conducted off the coast of Alabama from March 1995 to January 1997. Red snapper were caught using rod and reel over nine artificial reef sites, with three reefs each located at 21-m, 27-m, and 32-m depths. During the study, 1,604 fish were tagged, and 174 recaptures were made of 167 individuals. On 4 October 1995, the eye of Hurricane Opal passed within 40 km of the artificial reef sites. When recaptures were stratified according to whether or not they were at liberty during Opal, storm effect was the most significant factor in predicting the likelihood of movement and magnitude of movement by tagged red snapper. Eighty percent of recaptured red snapper that were not at liberty during Opal were recaptured at their site of release. Fish that were at liberty during Opal, however, had a significantly higher likelihood of movement away from their site of release (P \u3c 0.001). These fish also moved significantly further than those that were not at liberty during Opal (P \u3c 0.001). Fish that were at liberty during Opal moved a mean distance (± SE) of 32.6 km (± 6.81), compared to a mean distance (± SE) of 2.5 km (± 1.10) for fish that were tagged and recaptured before Opal, and a mean distance (± SE) of 1.7 km (± 0.43) for fish that were tagged and recaptured after Opal. Heretofore, it has generally been accepted that adult red snapper demonstrate strong site fidelity and genetic homogeneity in the stock was hypothesized to result from larval drift or due to historic mixing on longer time scales. This study documents movement of adult red snapper on spatial scales that would facilitate stock mixing and implicates large-scale climatic events, such as hurricanes, as important factors in stock mixing dynamics
