    Development of Cross-Curricular Career Education Making Use of Internship in a Middle School : Building Relevance of Students ‘Subjective Leaning, School life, and Social Life

    キャリア教育として中学校の職場体験活動はほぼすべての学校で実施されている。本稿はその事前指導,事後指導を通して,職場体験と学校で学ぶ教科,学校生活,社会生活を生徒にとって意味あるつながりの構築を目指して行った実践の紹介である。具体的には,教職免許を持つ 6 名の大学院生が,それぞれの専門性を生かして教科の専門性と働くことと生活がつながっていることを,中学校 2 年生の職場体験の事後指導Ⅰとしてポスターセッションで伝えた。事後指導 2 時間目では,生徒は働くことと生活と教科のつながりを可視化するマップを作成して意見交換をした。これらの活動の成果は,生徒が記入した授業の振り返りを分類することで確認した。その結果,授業実践者がねらったつながりに気づいたと思われる記述が多く見られた。中でも多かったのは,将来に備えて今後の勉学や努力したいという趣旨の回答であった。As part of career education, work experience activities are conducted in almost all junior high schools in Japan. This paper introduces a practice that helps students build meaningful connections between subjects learned in school, school life, and social life through guidance provided both before and after work experience activities. Specifically, in the first hour of post-activity instruction for the work experience of second-year students, six graduate students with teaching licenses made use of their respective specialties, combining work with subject specialties and students’ lives through poster sessions. In the second hour, graduate student teachers showed them worksheet which made them visualizes the connection between work, life, and subjects. After working with the worksheet according to their internship work, students discussed their case each other. The results of these activities were confirmed by classifying the lessons reviews written by students. Several descriptions contained the connection that the lesson practitioner had aimed for. The most common answers by the participants included their hope they would make study more for their further and for their satisfied life

    Unveiling the orbital-selective electronic band reconstruction through the structural phase transition in TaTe2_2

    Tantalum ditelluride TaTe2_2 belongs to the family of layered transition metal dichalcogenides but exhibits a unique structural phase transition at around 170 K that accompanies the rearrangement of the Ta atomic network from a "ribbon chain" to a "butterfly-like" pattern. While multiple mechanisms including Fermi surface nesting and chemical bonding instabilities have been intensively discussed, the origin of this transition remains elusive. Here we investigate the electronic structure of single-crystalline TaTe2_2 with a particular focus on its modifications through the phase transition, by employing core-level and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations. Temperature-dependent core-level spectroscopy demonstrates a splitting of the Ta 4f4f core-level spectra through the phase transition indicative of the Ta-dominated electronic state reconstruction. Low-energy electronic state measurements further reveal an unusual kink-like band reconstruction occurring at the Brillouin zone boundary, which cannot be explained by Fermi surface nesting or band folding effects. On the basis of the orbital-projected band calculations, this band reconstruction is mainly attributed to the modifications of specific Ta 5d5d states, namely the dXYd_{XY} orbitals (the ones elongating along the ribbon chains) at the center Ta sites of the ribbon chains. The present results highlight the strong orbital-dependent electronic state reconstruction through the phase transition in this system and provide fundamental insights towards understanding complex electron-lattice-bond coupled phenomena.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figure

    Pemphigus vulgaris as an immune-related adverse event in recurrent metastatic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma treated with ipilimumab plus nivolumab: a case report and literature review

    Ipilimumab plus nivolumab therapy is approved for patients with unresectable advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Although a combination of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), compared to conventional chemotherapy, can improve overall survival in patients with advanced ESCC, this increases the incidence of immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Here, we describe an ESCC case that developed pemphigus vulgaris (PV), an extremely rare cutaneous irAE, during ipilimumab plus nivolumab treatment. The patient achieved a partial response to treatment. The PV was successfully managed after the cessation of ipilimumab and the use of a topical steroid. We should thus re-treat ESCC with nivolumab monotherapy. In the era of ICIs as standard cancer therapeutics, diagnostic criteria for blistering diseases need to be established to properly manage patients with cutaneous irAEs

    Trastuzumab-Based Combination Chemotherapy in Patients with Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor-2-Positive Metastatic Carcinoma ex Pleomorphic Adenoma

    Background: Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) is a rare histologic subtype of lacrimal gland and submandibular gland cancer. Currently, there is no standard treatment for metastatic CXPA, although some case reports have explored the role of targeted agents in chemotherapy. A few histopathologic analyses have shown that some of these tumors overexpress human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2), suggesting a potential role for HER2-based therapy. We report here two cases of metastatic CXPA that were treated with trastuzumab-based chemotherapy (IRB approved) with rapid and significant responses. Case Report 1: A 66-year-old male was diagnosed as HER2-positive CXPA of the right lacrimal gland with multiple bone and lymph node metastases. Combination chemotherapy with trastuzumab (Tmab) and nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel (nabPTX) was initiated. A rapid response was confirmed, and after seven cycles of treatment, CR(complete response) was achieved. Case Report 2: A 67-year-old female was diagnosed with HER2 positive CXPA of the right submandibular gland. Multiple pulmonary metastatic lesions were detected after surgery, and combination chemotherapy with Tmab and nab-PTX was initiated. A rapid partial response (PR) was confirmed, and she eventually became disease-free. Conclusion: In the absence of definitive clinical trials, which are unlikely to be performed due to the rarity of HER2-positive CXPA, therapeutic information must be obtained from case reports. Some reports, such as this one, have suggested a potential utility of trastuzumab-based chemotherapy

    Congenital-idiopathic superficial femoral artery aneurysm in a 7-year-old child

    Superficial femoral artery aneurysm in children is distinctly uncommon, and usually results from infection, vasculitis, connective tissue disorder, or trauma. We report a 7-year-old girl who had multiple fusiform aneurysms of the right superficial femoral artery, with no evidence of related disorders. The patient successfully underwent aneurysm resection and femoral artery reconstruction with autogenous saphenous vein. Histologic examination revealed intimal thickening with fibroplasia without severe inflammatory infiltrates or cystic medial necrosis, suggesting a congenital-idiopathic arterial aneurysm. Three years after the procedure, the saphenous vein graft is fully patent and the patient is in good condition

    Certain cellular components of the eye, such as neural retina, are unable to regenerate and replicate after destructive inflammation. Ocular immune privilege provides the eye with immune protection against intraocular inflammation in order to minimize the risk to vision integrity. The eye and immune system use strategies to maintain the ocular immune privilege by regulating the innate and adaptive immune response, which includes immunological ignorance, peripheral tolerance to eye-derived antigens, and intraocular immunosuppressive microenvironment. In this review, we summarize current knowledge regarding the molecular mechanism responsible for the development and maintenance of ocular immune privilege via regulatory T cells (Tregs), which are generated by the anterior chamber-associated immune deviation (ACAID), and ocular resident cells including corneal endothelial (CE) cells, ocular pigment epithelial (PE) cells, and aqueous humor. Furthermore, we examined the therapeutic potential of Tregs generated by RPE cells that express transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated antigen-2 alpha (CTLA-2α), and retinoic acid for autoimmune uveoretinitis and evaluated a new strategy using human RPE-induced Tregs for clinical application in inflammatory ocular disease. We believe that a better understanding of the ocular immune privilege associated with Tregs might offer a new approach with regard to therapeutic interventions for ocular autoimmunity

    Candida albicans Promotes the Antimicrobial Tolerance of Escherichia coli in a Cross-Kingdom Dual-Species Biofilm

    Cross-kingdom multi-species biofilms consisting of fungi and bacteria are often resistant to antimicrobial treatment, leading to persistent infections. We evaluated whether the presence of Candida albicans affects the antibacterial tolerance of Escherichia coli in dual-species biofilms and explored the underlying mechanism. We found that the survival of E. coli in the presence of antibacterial drugs was higher in dual-species biofilms compared to single-species biofilms. This tolerance-inducing effect was observed in E. coli biofilms that were treated with a C. albicans culture supernatant. To explore the antibacterial tolerance-inducing factor contained in the culture supernatant and identify the tolerance mechanism, a heated supernatant, a supernatant treated with lyticase, DNase, and proteinase K, or a supernatant added to a drug efflux pump inhibitor were used. However, the tolerance-inducing activity was not lost, indicating the existence of some other mechanisms. Ultrafiltration revealed that the material responsible for tolerance-inducing activity was <10 kDa in size. This factor has not yet been identified and needs further studies to understand the mechanisms of action of this small molecule precisely. Nevertheless, we provide experimental evidence that Candida culture supernatant induces E. coli antibacterial tolerance in biofilms. These findings will guide the development of new treatments for dual-species biofilm infections
