    ESR applications to meteorite samples

    Get PDF
Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements were performed on several meteorites. Preliminary results demonstrate some significant features. After the magnetic separation of powdered samples, some of ESR measurements gave ferromagnetic resonance-type spectra similar to the lunar soils. ESR spectra, presumably associated with radiation-induced defects, were observed in Allan Hills-765 and the CAI portion of the Allende meteorite

環境微生物のゲノム多様性を高解像度に検出 --「似て非なるゲノム」から生物多様性の源泉に迫る--. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2022-08-10.Same same but different. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2022-09-22.Reconstruction of metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) has become a fundamental approach in microbial ecology. However, a MAG is hardly complete and overlooks genomic microdiversity because metagenomic assembly fails to resolve microvariants among closely related genotypes. Aiming at understanding the universal factors that drive or constrain prokaryotic genome diversification, we performed an ecosystem-wide high-resolution metagenomic exploration of microdiversity by combining spatiotemporal (2 depths × 12 months) sampling from a pelagic freshwater system, high-quality MAG reconstruction using long- and short-read metagenomic sequences, and profiling of single nucleotide variants (SNVs) and structural variants (SVs) through mapping of short and long reads to the MAGs, respectively. We reconstructed 575 MAGs, including 29 circular assemblies, providing high-quality reference genomes of freshwater bacterioplankton. Read mapping against these MAGs identified 100 to 101, 781 SNVs/Mb and 0 to 305 insertions, 0 to 467 deletions, 0 to 41 duplications, and 0 to 6 inversions for each MAG. Nonsynonymous SNVs were accumulated in genes potentially involved in cell surface structural modification to evade phage recognition. Most (80.2%) deletions overlapped with a gene coding region, and genes of prokaryotic defense systems were most frequently (>8% of the genes) overlapped with a deletion. Some such deletions exhibited a monthly shift in their allele frequency, suggesting a rapid turnover of genotypes in response to phage predation. MAGs with extremely low microdiversity were either rare or opportunistic bloomers, suggesting that population persistency is key to their genomic diversification. The results concluded that prokaryotic genomic diversification is driven primarily by viral load and constrained by a population bottleneck

ESR dosimetry study of population in the vicinity of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site

A tooth enamel electron spin resonance (ESR) dosimetry study was carried out with the purpose of obtaining the individual absorbed radiation doses of population from settlements in the Semipalatinsk region of Kazakhstan, which was exposed to radioactive fallout traces from nuclear explosions in the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site and Lop Nor test base, China. Most of the settlements are located near the central axis of radioactive fallout trace from the most contaminating surface nuclear test, which was conducted on 29 August 1949, with the maximum detected excess dose being 430 ± 93 mGy. A maximum dose of 268 ± 79 mGy was determined from the settlements located close to radioactive fallout trace resulting from surface nuclear tests on 24 August 1956 (Ust-Kamenogorsk, Znamenka, Shemonaikha, Glubokoe, Tavriya and Gagarino). An accidental dose of 56 ± 42 mGy was found in Kurchatov city residents located close to fallout trace after the nuclear test on 7 August 1962. This method was applied to human tooth enamel to obtain individual absorbed doses of residents of the Makanchi, Urdzhar and Taskesken settlements located near the Kazakhstan–Chinese border due to the influence of nuclear tests (1964–1981) at Lop Nor. The highest dose was 123 ± 32 mGy

Radiation effects in natural quartz crystals

Optically clear, as visually observed, natural quartz crystals of Brazilian and Arkansas origins, which exhibit Al–OH–-centers in their as-received conditions, have been measured for their low temperature ESR spectra to see the presence of Al-hole centers. The ESR spectra revealed the presence of Al-hole centers in their as-received conditions. These centers showed an increase in their strength upon irradiation with a 60 C0 source. Such observations were exhibited by Al–OH-centers as noticed earlier. The crystals were thus noticed to exhibit the presence of Al–OH– -centers and also Al-hole centers in their as-received conditions. The observations match with the results on cultured quartz where irradiation breaks away the Al-alkali centers into a mixture of Al–OH–- and Al-hole centers. It is thus concluded that the natural crystals, which exhibit the presence of these centers in their as-received condition, have been irradiated in nature with a low dose

Thermoluminescence studies of ordinary chondrites in the Japanese Antarctic meteorite collection, II: New measurements for thirty type 3 ordinary chondrites

We have measured the thermoluminescence (TL) properties of thirty type 3 ordinary chondrites from the Japanese Antarctic meteorite collection. This brings to 73 the total number of Japanese type 3 ordinary chondrites examined in this way by the Arkansas-Okayama collaboration. Fifteen pairing groups were found using TL and geographical criteria. Most of the new meteorites are of petrologic types 3.6-3.9,but fourteen are of petrologic type ≤3.4. Six of the 73 meteorites (Yamato (Y)-790448,Y-793596,Y-793565,Y-791324,Y-791558,Y-74660) have petrographic types 3.5) tend to have higher induced TL peak temperature and peak width than those with low TL sensitivity, in confirmation of earlier work and consistent with peak temperature and width as well as TL sensitivity, being independent parameters of thermal history. Samples not obeying these trends (Y-75029,Y-86706,Y-793567 and Y-790787), are either heavily weathered or experienced atypical thermal histories
