    Regional and Global Financial Integration in East Asia

    We examine the degree of regional vs. global financial integration of East Asian countries in three ways; (1) comparing the size of cross-border assets such as securities and bank claims, (2) estimating the gravity model of bilateral financial asset holdings, and (3) estimating consumption risk sharing model. The results suggest that East Asian financial markets, particularly compared to the European ones, are relatively less integrated with each other than to global markets. We also find relatively more evidence of regional financial integration in bank claim markets than portfolio asset markets. The low financial integration within East Asia is attributed to the low incentives for portfolio diversification within the region, the low degree of development and deregulation of financial markets, and the instability in monetary and exchange rate regime.Regional financial integration; Global financial integration; East Asia

    Organizational Citizenship Behavior of Special Forces in the ROK Army

    The unconventional nature of the working environments and tasks of the ROK Army Special Forces (“Special Forces”), as compared to regular army forces, means that Special Forces’ organizational performance is largely influenced by their behavioral patterns and mindset. This study examines the organizational citizenship behavior of Special Forces to enhance their organizational performance. Specifically, this study seeks to investigate the causal path of organizational citizenship behavior and its factors, self-leadership, and trust in the supervisor. Data was collected from Special Forces based in the Seoul metropolitan area during a two-month period, from June to July 2013. A total of 650 questionnaires were distributed, of which 647 were returned. Using 638 questionnaires, excluding those that were unresponsive or filled out incompletely, frequency analysis, reliability and factor analysis, correlation analysis, and path analysis were performed using the SPSS 19.0 and AMOS 19.0 software packages. The results showed that Special Forces’ self-leadership had a significant effect on trust in the supervisor and organizational citizenship behavior, and trust in the supervisor had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between self-leadership and organizational citizenship behavior. Accordingly, this study posits that to enhance Special Forces’ organizational citizenship behavior, it is important to strengthen their self-leadership and trust in the supervisor

    The Influence of Korean Instagram Users’ Cultural Disposition, Social Capital, and Instagram Usage Propensity on their Evaluation Attributes for Fashion Influencers

    This study investigates on how Millennials evaluate fashion influencers on Instagram whom have been slowly leading the micro-cultural trends. The users tend to selectively compare, choose, and evaluate these influencers in terms of their own tastes and propensities, and also their cultural and social characteristics. Literary reviews have been used to evaluate categories of individuals’ cultural disposition by vertical-collectivism, vertical-individualism, horizontal collectivism, and horizontal individualism. Furthermore, there are two types of social capital in social networks, which is that people value the “bridging” nature of what links them with influencers, and people use a “bonding” nature to seek emotional stability while being involved in their ideal social gatherings. This study conducted a questionnaire survey of 467, 20 to 30-year-old male and female Instagram users. The questionnaire contains 2 sub-dimensions of Culture Disposition: Vertical Collectivism and Vertical Individualism; 2 sub-dimensions of Social Capital: Connective Social Capital and Bonding Social Capital; 2 sub-dimensions of Instagram usage propensity: Relationship Seeking Propensity and Information Seeking Propensity; 3 sub-dimensions of Fashion Influencer Evaluation Attributes: Professionalism, Attractiveness and Intimacy. It is meaningful to provide basic data for understanding the characteristics of Instagram users who utilize fashion influencers, for the purpose of market actualization. As a result, Vertical Collectivism and Vertical Individualism were found to be related to Relationship Seeking Propensity; Only Vertical Individualism was found to be related to Information Seeking Propensity. Furthermore, Relationship Seeking Propensity was found to be related to Intimacy, and Information Seeking Propensity was related to Professionalism, Intimacy and Attractiveness

    Aligning Large Language Models through Synthetic Feedback

    Aligning large language models (LLMs) to human values has become increasingly important as it enables sophisticated steering of LLMs, e.g., making them follow given instructions while keeping them less toxic. However, it requires a significant amount of human demonstrations and feedback. Recently, open-sourced models have attempted to replicate the alignment learning process by distilling data from already aligned LLMs like InstructGPT or ChatGPT. While this process reduces human efforts, constructing these datasets has a heavy dependency on the teacher models. In this work, we propose a novel framework for alignment learning with almost no human labor and no dependency on pre-aligned LLMs. First, we perform reward modeling (RM) with synthetic feedback by contrasting responses from vanilla LLMs with various sizes and prompts. Then, we use the RM for simulating high-quality demonstrations to train a supervised policy and for further optimizing the model with reinforcement learning. Our resulting model, Aligned Language Model with Synthetic Training dataset (ALMoST), outperforms open-sourced models, including Alpaca, Dolly, and OpenAssistant, which are trained on the outputs of InstructGPT or human-annotated instructions. Our 7B-sized model outperforms the 12-13B models in the A/B tests using GPT-4 as the judge with about 75% winning rate on average.Comment: Preprint, 9 pages (with 10 pages of supplementary

    Wheel Impact Test by Deep Learning: Prediction of Location and Magnitude of Maximum Stress

    The impact performance of the wheel during wheel development must be ensured through a wheel impact test for vehicle safety. However, manufacturing and testing a real wheel take a significant amount of time and money because developing an optimal wheel design requires numerous iterative processes of modifying the wheel design and verifying the safety performance. Accordingly, the actual wheel impact test has been replaced by computer simulations, such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA), but it still requires high computational costs for modeling and analysis. Moreover, FEA experts are needed. This study presents an aluminum road wheel impact performance prediction model based on deep learning that replaces the computationally expensive and time-consuming 3D FEA. For this purpose, 2D disk-view wheel image data, 3D wheel voxel data, and barrier mass value used for wheel impact test are utilized as the inputs to predict the magnitude of maximum von Mises stress, corresponding location, and the stress distribution of 2D disk-view. The wheel impact performance prediction model can replace the impact test in the early wheel development stage by predicting the impact performance in real time and can be used without domain knowledge. The time required for the wheel development process can be shortened through this mechanism

    Usefulness of continuous glucose monitoring of blood glucose control in patients with diabetes undergoing hemodialysis: A pilot study

    BackgroundBlood glucose stability has recently been considered important in the treatment of diabetes. Both hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia can frequently occur in patients with diabetes undergoing hemodialysis. This study aimed to determine the usefulness of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) for glycemic control and glycemic variability stabilization in patients with diabetes undergoing hemodialysis.Materials and methodsEighteen patients aged ≥18 years with type 1 or 2 diabetes and ≥3 months on hemodialysis at the Eulji Medical Center, Daejeon, Republic of Korea between November 2021 and May 2022 were included. Patients underwent 7 days CGM twice: the baseline study period (T0) and the follow-up study period (T1), at a 12 weeks interval. Physicians modified the treatment strategy according to the T0 results, and then patients conducted T1. As indicators of glycemic control, the mean glucose levels, glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and time in range were measured. As indicators of glycemic variability, standard deviation (SD) and % coefficient variation (%CV) were measured.ResultsData from 18 patients were analyzed. The mean glucose levels, HbA1c, SD, and %CV improved in T1 compared to T0 (P < 0.05). During T0, the mean glucose level was significantly lower on a day with hemodialysis than on a day without (P < 0.05), and SD and %CV were significantly higher on a day with hemodialysis than on a day without (P < 0.05). After the physicians modified the treatment according to the T0 results, there were no differences in the mean glucose levels, SD, and %CV between days with and without hemodialysis during T1.ConclusionContinuous glucose monitoring could be a promising tool for individualizing treatment strategies in patients with diabetes undergoing hemodialysis

    Autoinducer-2 Quorum Sensing Influences Viability of Escherichia coli O157:H7 under Osmotic and In Vitro Gastrointestinal Stress Conditions

    Bacteria use autoinducer molecules to communicate both at intra-species and inter-species levels by quorum sensing. One such cell density-dependent signaling system is the luxS-mediated universal quorum sensing using autoinducer-2 (AI-2). Virulence of several pathogens is determined by an AI-2 system and is related to colonization and infection of the host. From this concept, numerous papers have suggested that AI-2 inhibition is an important strategy toward designing of new antimicrobial agents. However, recent studies indicate that the AI-2 system is also involved in adaptation and survival under environmental stress conditions. Therefore, we hypothesized that interaction between quorum sensing and environmental conditions may be critical in influencing predicted results in a control and when combating of target pathogens. We investigated the growth of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 (EHEC) and its luxS-deficient (non AI-2 producing) mutant strain under various stress conditions, and found significant differences in the growth rate under osmotic stress. Moreover, we could also show the impact of the AI-2 molecule on viability in the gastrointestinal tract model representing a complex environmental condition. Differences in vital responses of the strains suggest that AI-2 quorum sensing has a significant influence on the viability of EHEC under environmental stress conditions

    Quantitative prediction of oral bioavailability of a lipophilic antineoplastic drug bexarotene administered in lipidic formulation using a combined in vitro lipolysis/microsomal metabolism approach

    For performance assessment of the lipid-based drug delivery systems (LBDDS), in vitro lipolysis is commonly applied because traditional dissolution tests do not reflect the complicated in vivo micellar formation and solubilisation processes. Much of previous research on in vitro lipolysis have mostly focused on rank-ordering formulations for their predicted performances. In this study, we have incorporated in vitro lipolysis with microsomal stability to quantitatively predict the oral bioavailability of a lipophilic antineoplastic drug bexarotene (BEX) administered in LBDDS. Two types of LBDDS were applied: lipid solution and lipid suspension. The predicted oral bioavailability values (Foral,predicted) of BEX from linking in vitro lipolysis with microsomal stability for lipid solution and lipid suspension were 34.2 1.6% and 36.2 2.6%, respectively, while the in vivo oral bioavailability (Foral) of BEX was tested as 31.5 13.4% and 31.4 5.2%, respectively. The Foral,predicted corresponded well with the Foral for both formulations, demonstrating that the combination of in vitro lipolysis and microsomal stability can quantitatively predict oral bioavailability of BEX. In vivo intestinal lymphatic uptake was also assessed for the formulations and resulted in [less than] 1% of the dose, which confirmed that liver microsomal stability was necessary for correct prediction of the bioavailability

    Exploring the utility of alcohol flushing as an instrumental variable for alcohol intake in Koreans

    Abstract Previous studies have indicated an association of higher alcohol intake with cardiovascular disease and related traits, but causation has not been definitively established. In this study, the causal effect of alcohol intake on hypertension in 2,011 men and women from the Ansan-Ansung cohort was estimated using an instrumental variable (IV) approach, with both a phenotypic and genotypic instrument for alcohol intake: alcohol flushing and the rs671 genotype (in the alcohol dehydrogenase 2 [ALDH2] gene), respectively. Both alcohol flushing and the rs671 genotype were associated with alcohol intake (difference in alcohol intake with alcohol flushers vs. non-flushers: −9.07 g/day; 95% confidence interval [CI]: −11.12, −7.02; P-value: 8.3 × 10−18 and with the rs671 GA + AA vs. GG genotype: −7.94 g/day; 95% CI: −10.20, −5.69; P-value: 6.1 × 10−12). An increase in alcohol intake, as predicted by both the absence of alcohol flushing and the presence of the rs671 GG genotype in the IV analyses, was associated with an increase in blood pressure in men from this Korean population. In conclusion, this study supports a causal effect of alcohol intake on hypertension and indicated that alcohol flushing may be a valid proxy for the ALDH2 rs671 polymorphism, which influences alcohol intake in this Korean population
