    A Novel Structure of Rolling Piston Type Rotary Compressor

    This paper presents a new design of rolling piston type rotary compressor and the analysis of the performance of the novel compressor is conducted. The concept of the novel compressor is to utilize the interior space of the roller as inner working volume. The vane is connected and fixed to the outer cylinder and the inner cylinder, and the split bush is located between the roller and the vane to help revolution of the roller. Therefore, the novel compressor has two working volumes. One is outer volume trapped within the outer cylinder, the vane, and the roller and the other is inner volume trapped within the inner cylinder, the vane, and the roller. In the same frame size, the cooling capacity of the novel compressor is increased by average 34.77% over that of the traditional rolling piston type rotary compressor. This is because the mass flow rate of the refrigerant into the compressor increases due to the increase of the total working volume. However, the input power is also increased by average 23.4% over that of the traditional rolling piston type rotary compressor. It is because the indicated work increases due to inner compression work. As a result, the energy efficiency ratio (EER) of the novel compressor is increased by 9.42% over that of the traditional rolling piston type compressor

    Superficial cervical plexus block for management of herpes zoster neuralgia in the C3 dermatome: a case report

    INTRODUCTION: Herpes zoster is a well-known reactivating viral disease that gives rise to painful skin lesions. Although this vesicular rash heals up within a few weeks, pain sometimes continues, becoming postherpetic neuralgia. In the case of those at high risk of developing postherpetic neuralgia, early interventional pain management is generally recommended as a preventive measure. Pain specialists usually do not see patients face-to-face for chronic refractory pain until the stage of postherpetic neuralgia. However, active and aggressive management, including antiviral treatment, of herpetic neuralgia during the acute stage of herpes zoster promises better results. In this respect, superficial cervical plexus block can help patients, such as the case reported here, by relieving the pain of herpes zoster involving the C3 dermatome. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old Korean man with severe pain in his left C3 dermatome due to herpes zoster was admitted to our hospital. His pain was so refractory to medication that he consulted our pain clinic for pain control. Due to the medication limitations imposed by his underlying diseases (hepatitis B, liver cirrhosis, atrial fibrillation, and asthma), early interventional therapy including stellate ganglion block was planned. In addition, because his painful C3 dermatome overlapped significantly with the superficial cervical plexus dermatome, ultrasound-guided superficial cervical plexus block was utilized for pain control of the intractable herpes zoster neuritis in his C3 dermatome. The result with respect to his sporadic neuralgia was satisfactory. CONCLUSIONS: We found superficial cervical plexus block to be an effective interventional procedure for pain management of herpes zoster, particularly at the C3-dermatomal level

    Inscribing or Circumscribing a Histogon to a Convex Polygon

    We consider two optimization problems of approximating a convex polygon, one by a largest inscribed histogon and the other by a smallest circumscribed histogon. An axis-aligned histogon is an axis-aligned rectilinear polygon such that every horizontal edge has an integer length. A histogon of orientation ? is a copy of an axis-aligned histogon rotated by ? in counterclockwise direction. The goal is to find a largest inscribed histogon and a smallest circumscribed histogon over all orientations in [0,?). Depending on whether the horizontal width of a histogon is predetermined or not, we consider several different versions of the problem and present exact algorithms. These optimization problems belong to shape analysis, classification, and simplification, and they have applications in various cost-optimization problems

    This study was aimed to examine the efficiency of using 3D virtual design tools for customization process and creative design process by creating art wears with 3D design tools for individuals. The 3D Design for Art Wear Project has been conducted by collaborating in creating a wearable form from a digital print in art. For the project, art wears were designed with OptiTex 3D virtual design tool and 3D body scanner to create a seamless art wear from a genuine digital print art Superficial Outgrowth created by the artist. A customized wearable art with 3D design has been developed in this project. It is a remarkable that once a person has been scanned with a 3D body scanner, stored in the 3D system and designed in 3D, mapping the art without unnecessary cutting and no physical fitting process

    Carbon Nanotubes in Nanocomposites and Hybrids with Hydroxyapatite for Bone Replacements

    Hydroxyapatite (HA), as a bone mineral component, has been an attractive bioceramic for the reconstruction of hard tissues. However, its poor mechanical properties, including low fracture toughness and tensile strength, have been a significant challenge to the application of HA for the replacement of load-bearing and/or large bone defects. Among materials studied to reinforce HA, carbon nanotubes (CNTs: single-walled or multiwalled) have recently gained significant attention because of their unprecedented mechanical properties (high strength and toughness) and physicochemical properties (high surface area, electrical and thermal conductivity, and low weight). Here, we review recent studies of the organization of HA-CNTs at the nanoscale, with a particular emphasis on the functionalization of CNTs and their dispersion within an HA matrix and induction of HA mineralization. The organization of CNTs and HA implemented at the nanoscale can further be developed in the form of coatings, nanocomposites, and hybrid powders to enable potential applications in hard tissue reconstruction

    Highly sensitive colorimetric detection of allergies based on an immunoassay using peroxidase-mimicking nanozymes

    Nanomaterials that exhibit enzyme-like characteristics, which are called nanozymes, have recently attracted significant attention due to their potential to overcome the intrinsic limitations of natural enzymes, such as low stability and relatively high cost for preparation and purification. In this study, we report a highly efficient colorimetric allergy detection system based on an immunoassay utilizing the peroxidase- mimicking activity of hierarchically structured platinum nanoparticles (H-Pt NPs). The H-Pt NPs had a diameter of 30 nm, and were synthesized by a seed-mediated growth method, which led to a significant amount of peroxidase-like activity. This activity mainly occurs because of the high catalytic power of the Pt element, and the fact that the H-Pt NPs have a large surface area available for catalytic events. The H-Pt NPs were conjugated to an antibody for the detection of immunoglobulin E (IgE) in the analytes; IgE is a representative marker for the diagnosis of allergies. They were then successfully integrated into a conventionally used allergy diagnostic test, the ImmunoCAP diagnostic test, as a replacement for natural signaling enzymes. Using this strategy, total and specific IgE levels were detected within 5 min at room temperature, with high specificity and sensitivity. The practical utility of the immunoassay was also successfully verified by correctly determining the levels of both total and specific IgE in real human serum samples with high precision and reproducibility. The present H-Pt NP-based immunoassay system would serve as a platform for rapid, robust, and convenient analysis of IgE, and can be extended to the construction of diagnostic systems for a variety of clinically important target molecules.11Ysciescopu
