    Habermas\u27 Communicative Theory of Action and the Internet Marketing Communication

    Based on (1) the conceptual analysis of several perspectives on communication richness and (2) the results of a small experiment utilizing college students, it is argued that a critical social theory (CST) perspective by Habermas provides marketing communication researchers with a strong conceptual frame of reference which can lead to better understanding of the Internet marketing communication effectiveness. It is thus proposed that future communication research be conducted with communication context taken into consideration

    Thermally assisted quantum vortex tunneling in the Hall and dissipative regime

    Quantum vortex tunneling is studied for the case where the Hall and the dissipative dynamics are simultaneously present. For a given temperature, the magnetization relaxation rate is calculated as a function of the external current and the quasiparticle scattering time. The relaxation rate is solved analytically at zero temperature and obtained numerically at finite temperatures by the variational method. In the moderately clean samples, we have found that a minimum in the relaxation rate exists at zero temperature, which tends to disappear with increase in the temperature.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, to be published in Phys.     Towards an explication of the presence effects on information processing and persuasion: A construal level framework

    Dissatisfied with the existing theoretical account of the effects of presence on the mode of information processing (i.e., heuristic vs. systematic processing) and how this leads to persuasion in the context of mediated communication, the current study suggests an alternative framework that could provide an efficient and reasonable way of understanding the underlying psychological mechanism of the presence effects on persuasion. Drawing on presence theory, construal level theory, and the dual process model of persuasion, this study proposes a conceptual model that posits construal level as a key variable that mediates the effects of presence on the mode of information processing. Specifically, on the basis of the conceptual overlap between psychological distance and presence, which are respectively represented as key constructs in construal level theory and presence theory, this study proposes that a sense of presence has the potential to replace the role of psychological distance in the construal level theory and consequently prime a certain level of construal (i.e., the extent to which people’s thinking is abstract or concrete). Additionally, the conceptual similarity between the construal level in the construal level theory and the dual process model is supposed to lead people to apply the primed level of construal in processing information. In this framework, construal level is posited as a key factor that could mediate the relationship between the degree to which people experience a sense of presence and the mode of information processing. This study also attempts to provide a theoretical understanding of how this framework will serially influence the formation of trust and persuasion (i.e., behavioral intention). Guided by the empirical evidence from earlier studies, heuristic and systematic processing are predicted to respectively increase the degree to which people form affective trust towards brand and cognitive trust towards advertising product information. Consequently, persuasion is predicted to occur through both cognitive trust towards advertising product information and affective trust towards brand, as affect and cognition are intertwined. In order to validate this conceptual model, a two (ad presentation mode: video vs. text) x two (ad type: location-based advertising vs. traditional advertising) between-subjects experiment (N = 180) was conducted in a recent advertising context―i.e., location-based advertising. Consistent with the predictions based on this framework, the results showed that construal level plays a significant role in mediating the effects of presence and social presence on the mode of information processing. In addition, the amount of heuristic and systematic processing, determined by the construal level primed by a sense of presence and social presence, was positively associated with the degree to which people form affective trust towards brand and cognitive trust towards advertising product information. Consequently, both affective trust towards brand and cognitive trust towards advertising product information, formed through heuristic and systematic processing, positively influenced participants’ behavioral (purchase) intention. Through partial least squares structural equation modeling, this framework was statistically validated. Further theoretical implications of this framework are discussed

    A theoretical model for predicting Schottky-barrier height of the nanostructured silicide-silicon junction

    ABSTRACT In this work, we have performed the first-principles calculations to investigate the Schottky barrier height (SBH) of various nanostructured silicide-silicon junctions. As for the silicides, PtSi, NiSi, TiSi2, and YSi2 have been used. We find that EFiF = EFi – EF, where EFi and EF are the intrinsic Fermi level of the semiconductor part and the Fermi level of the junction, respectively, is unchanged by nanostructuring. From this finding, we suggest a model, a symmetric increase of the SBH (SI) model, to properly predict SBHs of nanostructured silicide-silicon junctions. We also suggest two measurable quantities for the experimental validation of our model. The effect of our SI model applied to nanostructures such as nanowires and ultra-thin-bodies is compared with that of the widely used previous SBH model

    Evaluation of Ambisonics Decoding Methods with Experimental Measurements

    Ambisonics is a sound reproduction technique based on the decomposition of the sound field using spherical harmonics. The truncation in the number of coefficients used to recreate the sound field leads to reproduction artifacts which depend on the frequency and the listener spatial location. In this work, the performance of three different decoding methods (Basic, Max-rE and In-Phase) has been studied and evaluated in the light of the results of experimental measurements. The latter were performed using a spherical array composed of 40 uniformly distributed loudspeakers and a translating 29-channel linear microphone array. An error analysis is presented based on the difference between the desired and synthesized sound pressure and acoustic intensity field. The results indicate that, as expected, the size of the region of accurate sound field reconstruction reduces as frequency increases, but with different trends depending on the type of decoder implemented

    B+-tree Index Optimization by Exploiting Internal Parallelism of Flash-based Solid State Drives

    Previous research addressed the potential problems of the hard-disk oriented design of DBMSs of flashSSDs. In this paper, we focus on exploiting potential benefits of flashSSDs. First, we examine the internal parallelism issues of flashSSDs by conducting benchmarks to various flashSSDs. Then, we suggest algorithm-design principles in order to best benefit from the internal parallelism. We present a new I/O request concept, called psync I/O that can exploit the internal parallelism of flashSSDs in a single process. Based on these ideas, we introduce B+-tree optimization methods in order to utilize internal parallelism. By integrating the results of these methods, we present a B+-tree variant, PIO B-tree. We confirmed that each optimization method substantially enhances the index performance. Consequently, PIO B-tree enhanced B+-tree's insert performance by a factor of up to 16.3, while improving point-search performance by a factor of 1.2. The range search of PIO B-tree was up to 5 times faster than that of the B+-tree. Moreover, PIO B-tree outperformed other flash-aware indexes in various synthetic workloads. We also confirmed that PIO B-tree outperforms B+-tree in index traces collected inside the Postgresql DBMS with TPC-C benchmark.Comment: VLDB201

    Analysis of drain-induced barrier rising in short-channel negative-capacitance FETs and its applications

    We investigate the performance of hysteresis-free short-channel negative-capacitance FETs (NCFETs) by combining quantum-mechanical calculations with the Landau-Khalatnikov equation. When the subthreshold swing (SS) becomes smaller than 60 mV/dec, a negative value of drain-induced barrier lowering is obtained. This behavior, drain-induced barrier rising (DIBR), causes negative differential resistance in the output characteristics of the NCFETs. We also examine the performance of an inverter composed of hysteresis-free NCFETs to assess the effects of DIBR at the circuit level. Contrary to our expectation, although hysteresis-free NCFETs are used, hysteresis behavior is observed in the transfer properties of the inverter. Furthermore, it is expected that the NCFET inverter with hysteresis behavior can be used as a Schmitt trigger inverter
