    Scaling the stimulated emission of polarization-entangled photons using passive optical components

    Bright sources of polarization-entangled photon pairs are essential components for quantum information technologies. In general, it is necessary to introduce a resonator that combines active optical components such as an electric optical modulator to enhance the stimulated emission of polarization-entangled photons. It is technically difficult to perform the time series operation to output the stimulated entangled photons in the resonator by synchronizing laser pulses. In this paper, we propose a scheme to scale up the stimulated emission of polarization-entangled photon pairs using a resonator with only passive optical components. We show the theoretical aspects of the scheme and also perform a proof-of-principle experimental demonstration of the scheme in a double-pass configuration.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, Physical Review A to be publishe

    Advantages and Disadvantages of Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment in Mice with Obesity Hyperlipidemia and Steatohepatitis

    The effect of hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) was examined using MSG mice, which are an animal model of obesity, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Nineteen MSG male mice were divided into HBOT treated and control groups at 12 weeks of ages. The HBOT group was treated with hyperbaric oxygen from 12 to 14 weeks (first phase) and then from 16 to 18 weeks (second phase). Interestingly, the body weight of the HBOT group was significantly lower (P < 0.01) than that of the control group. In contrast, the serum lipid level did not show significant changes between the two groups. As for the effects of increasing oxidative stress, the liver histology of the HBOT group showed severer cellular damage and aberrant TNF-α expression. HBOT has the advantage of improving obesity in patients with metabolic syndrome, but the fault of causing organ damage by increasing oxidative stress

    Time-resolved photoelectron angular distributions from nonadiabatically aligned CO2 molecules with SX-FEL at SACLA

    Weperformed time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of valence orbitals of alignedCO2 molecules using the femtosecond soft x-ray free-electron laser and the synchronized near-infrared laser. By properly ordering the individual single-shot ion images, we successfully obtained the photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) of theCO2 molecules aligned in the laboratory frame (LF). The simulations using the dipole matrix elements due to the time dependent density functional theory calculations well reproduce the experimental PADs by considering the axis distributions of the molecules. The simulations further suggest that, when the degrees of alignment can be increased up to \ue1 cos2 q\uf1 > 0.8, themolecular geometries during photochemical reactions can be extracted fromthe measured LFPADs once the accurate matrix elements are given by the calculations

    Quality of life following aortic valve replacement in octogenarians

    【Purpose】We aimed to evaluate the outcomes of and the quality of life (QOL) after conventional aortic valve replacement (AVR) amongst octogenarians.【Methods】We enrolled 48 patients aged ≥80 years who underwent conventional aortic valve replacement between May 1999 and November 2012. Patient conditions were assessed before surgery, at 6 and 12 months after surgery, and during the late period regarding the need for nursing care, degree of independent living, and living willingness.【Results】The follow-up rate was 100% with 45.6 ± 41.3 months follow-up. Two patients (4%) died during hospitalization and 11 (23%) died during the follow-up period. The 1-, 5-, and 10-year survival rates were 84.9, 76.9, and 39.6%, respectively. During the late period, of 35 surviving patients, 31 (88%) were living at home. The degree of independent living score decreased after surgery. However, scores of the need for nursing care and living willingness remained preoperative level.【Conclusions】QOL following conventional aortic valve replacement for elderly patients aged ≥80 years who showed independence in activities of daily living (ADL) before surgery were satisfactory. Therefore, aortic valve replacement could be a viable option for elderly patients aged ≥80 years after accounting for preoperative ADL levels
