    SEX-BASED DIFFERENCES IN TRUNK ACCELERATION AND LANDING POSTURE DURING THE DROP VERTICAL JUMP TEST

    The purpose of this study was to investigate sex-based differences in trunk acceleration and landing posture during the drop vertical jump test and to determine the relationships among relevant variables. Twenty college students (10 men and 10 women) performed drop vertical jumps from a 30cm high box. Trunk acceleration and the trunk, limb, knee, and ankle angles in the sagittal plane were measured. The unpaired Student t-test and Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients were used for statistical analysis. Female participants demonstrated greater vertical trunk acceleration and smaller trunk angles than male participants did. In addition, vertical acceleration correlated with trunk and limb angles. Therefore, these parameters, which can be estimated by using wearable sensors, may be useful for checking athletes at high risk for injury

    A Long-term Survivor after Congenital Acute Myeloid Leukemia with t(8 ; 16)(p11 ; p13)

    The treatment of patients with congenital leukemia is difficult and often results in a poor prognosis. We present here the case of a female child with congenital acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with t(8 ; 16) (p11 ; p13) who received chemotherapy and survived for more than 10 years without relapse. A novel MOZ-CBP chimera was found in her diagnostic sample. Although adult AML patients with MOZ-CBP have mainly been reported as having therapy-related AML and showed poor prognoses, the present case supports the idea that AML with MOZ-CBP in the pediatric population might show better prognoses

    Two Relapsed Stage III Childhood Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma Patients with NPM-ALK Fusion in Bone Marrow from Initial Diagnosis

    Childhood anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) accounts for approx. 10–30 of cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and the ALCL99 study reported 60–75 disease-free survival; however, a relatively high relapse rate was observed (25–30 ). We report 2 patients with Stage III ALCL who relapsed 6–18 months after the end of ALCL99 chemotherapy. A retrospective molecular analysis identified the nucleophosmin (NPM)-anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) fusion gene in the first diagnostic bone marrow samples taken from both patients. However, antibodies against the ALK protein appeared to be relatively low in the serum of both patients (×100 and ×750). An increase in chemotherapy intensity may be beneficial if Stage III ALCL patients are shown to be NPM-ALK chimera-positive in the first diagnostic bone marrow sample

    A Cluster of Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infections in a Hospital Ward for Adult Immunocompromised Patients

    Four male patients admitted to the same ward in the first half of September 201Y were identified to have respiratory syncytial virus(RSV)infection. Their ages ranged from 49 to 85 years(median 72.5). One patient was infected with human immunodeficiency virus and three patients had hematological malignancies. Following immuno-chromatological testing with a nasal cavity swab, RSV infection was diagnosed. Although blood and sputum cultures were performed in three patients, no significant bacteria were detected. Two cases responded to supportive therapy. However, one patient died secondary to multiple myeloma, and another patient developed pneumonia and died with an exacerbation of leukemia. RSV infections in immunocompromised hosts are associated with a poor prognosis. Early diagnosis will facilitate isolation of infected individuals to prevent hospital outbreaks

    Adherence to the face-down positioning after vitrectomy and gas tamponade: a time series analysis

    Abstract Objective To determine the adherence to the face-down positioning (FDP) in 296 patients who had undergone vitrectomy and gas tamponade. Results We studied 119 female and 177 male patients who had undergone primary vitrectomy and gas tamponade for a macular hole (MH) or for rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRDs). Adherence was assessed and recorded four times per day for 3 days postsurgery. The mean ± standard deviation adherence rate was 88.3 ± 11.7 (range 50.0–100.0). Female patients (90.8 ± 10.0) had significantly better adherence than male patients (86.7 ± 13.3; P < 0.02, U test). The adherence was significantly better after MH surgery (90.8 ± 11.7) than after RRD surgery (87.5 ± 12.5; P < 0.02). There were diurnal variations in adherence, being highest in the evening and significantly lower at midnight, and we evidenced a decline in adherence over time, with it being significantly low on the last follow-up day. Adherence to the FDP varied considerably among patients. Adherence was higher in female than in male patients, and higher in patients with MH than in those with RRD. We found patients age had no effect on adherence. Adherence also varied with time, being worst at midnight and declining over time
