    Effect of eddy current in shielding plate and electron gun on flux distribution in CRT

    The eddy current induced in an inner magnetic shield (IMS) and an electron gun affect the flux distribution of a cathode ray tube, causing a possible degrade of picture quality. In this paper, the effect of the distance between an IMS and a deflection coil on the eddy-current distribution is examined. The eddy current induced in the electron gun, when the coils for velocity modulation (VM) are set near the electron gun, is also analyzed. It is found that the variation of flux distribution is mainly affected by the shape of VM coil.</p

    Halocline structure in the Canada Basin of the Arctic Ocean

The definitive version was published in Geophysical Research Letters 32 (2005): L03605, doi:10.1029/2004GL021358.We examine the varieties and spatial distributions of Pacific and Eastern Arctic origin halocline waters in the Canada Basin using 2002–2003 hydrographic data. The halocline structure in the Canada Basin is different from the Eastern Arctic halocline because it includes fresher Pacific Winter Waters that form a “cold halostad” which lies above the Eastern Arctic origin lower halocline waters. The structure of the halostad in the Canada Basin, however, is not spatially uniform, and depends on the pathway and history of the source water. Pacific Winter Water entering through the Bering Strait becomes salty due to sea ice formation and this, in turn, is dependent on the occurrence and distribution of polynyas. In particular, saline water from the eastern Chukchi Sea forms thick halostad and causes depression of the isohalines in the southern Canada Basin.     AbstractElectric power demand management will play an important role in the creation of smart-energy communities. We are conducting a field experiment on the real-time feedback of electric power consumption via smart meters and tablet PCs with the participation of 51 households on Nushima Island, one of Japan's remote islands. Our estimate of the effect of feedback in reducing power demand by panel data analysis has revealed that such feedback achieves a saving of 7.6 percent in electric power demand

    Secreted factors from adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells suppress oxygen/glucose deprivation-induced cardiomyocyte cell death via furin/PCSK-like enzyme activity

    AbstractClinical application of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) represents a potential novel therapy for currently intractable deteriorating diseases or traumatic injuries, including myocardial infarction. However, the molecular mechanisms of the therapeutic effects have not been precisely revealed. Herein, we report that conditioned media (CM) from rat adipose tissue-derived MSCs (ASCs) protected adult cardiomyocytes from oxygen/glucose deprivation (OGD)-induced cell death. We focused on furin/PCSK protease activity in ASC-CM because many therapeutic factors of MSCs and soluble cardioprotective factors include the PCSK cleavage site. We found that recombinant furin protected cardiomyocytes from OGD-induced cell death. The ASC-CM had potent furin/PCSK protease activity and the cardioprotective effect of the CM from ASCs in the OGD-assay was abolished by an inhibitor of the furin/PCSK-like enzyme. Microarray analysis and Western blot analysis showed PCSK5A, the secreted type of PCSK5, is the most abundantly secreted PCSK among 7 PCSK family members in ASC. Finally, knockdown of PCSK5A in ASCs decreased both the furin/PCSK protease activity and cardioprotective activity in the CM. These findings indicate an involvement of furin/PCSK-type protease(s) in the anti-ischemic activity of ASCs, and suggest a new mechanism of the therapeutic effect of MSCs

    Clinical outcomes of prophylactic Damus-Kaye-Stansel anastomosis concomitant with bidirectional Glenn procedure

    ObjectiveWe evaluated prophylactic Damus-Kaye-Stansel (DKS) anastomosis in association with the timing of a bidirectional Glenn (BDG) procedure as second-stage palliation aiming at Fontan completion to prevent late systemic ventricular outflow tract obstruction.MethodsBetween 1996 and 2005, 25 patients (14 boys; median age, 12 months) underwent a BDG procedure concomitant with DKS anastomosis. All had a systemic ventricular outflow tract through an intraventricular communication or morphologically developed subaortic conus and had previously undergone pulmonary artery banding. Enlargement of intraventricular communication and/or resection of a subaortic conus were not performed before or during the operation.ResultsTwenty-one (84%) patients subsequently underwent a Fontan operation, with a follow-up period of 6.8 ± 1.9 years (range, 4-11 years), with no mortalities after the Fontan operation. Cardiac catheterization showed that systemic ventricular end-diastolic volume was significantly decreased from 187% ± 74% of normal before BDG to 139% ± 35% after (P = .038) and to 73% ± 14% at 4.3 years after the Fontan operation (P < .001). However, the pressure gradient across the systemic ventricular outflow tract remained at 0.5 ± 0.8 mm Hg after DKS anastomosis and 0.6 ± 2.3 mm Hg at 4.6 years after the Fontan operation. None of the patients showed more than moderate aortic or neoaortic regurgitation, except 1 who progressed to pulmonary regurgitation after DKS anastomosis and required a reoperation for a systemic ventricular outflow tract. No anatomic properties affected late neoaortic valve function.ConclusionsRegardless of a significant reduction in systemic ventricular volume, DKS anastomosis concomitant with a BDG procedure shows promise for a nonobstructive systemic ventricular outflow tract after a Fontan operation

Although the effect of the eddy current is important, reports about the analysis of this phenomenon are few. In this paper, the effect of the eddy current in the IMS and electron gun on flux distribution in the CRT is analyzed by using the 3-D finite element method.</p
