    Serum anti-hsp27 antibodies concentration in diabetes mellitus; population based case-control study

    Background: Diabetes mellitus is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Different biomarkers have been investigated for the diagnosis of diabetes pathogenesis or its complications. There are also reports regarding an increased level of anti-HSP27 antibodies in atherogenesis. We aimed to evaluate serum anti-heat shock protein 27 antibodies level in subjects with diabetes mellitus and undiagnosed individuals.  Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 6447 MASHAD study subjects, including four groups with diabetes mellitus (n=610), undiagnosed diabetes (n=162), impaired fasting glucose (IFG) (n=619) and normal (n=5056) subjects. Demographic and anthropometric data were obtained from all participants. Fasting serum glucose (FSG) and other parameters were measured. In-house enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay method was used for measuring Anti-HSP27 antibodies levels. Results: There were significant differences in weight (p=0.034), body mass index, waist, and hip circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting serum glucose, lipid profile and high sensitive- C reactive protein (p<0.001) between four groups of diabetes mellitus, undiagnosed diabetes, impaired fasting glucose, and normal subjects. The serum anti-HSP27 antibody titer did not show a significant difference between studied groups. Conclusion: Serum antibody titers to HSP27 were not significantly different between four groups categorized based on their FSG levels in a large population

    Nutritional status and oxidative stress on admission and discharge of myocardial infarction patients

    Introduction: The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of hospitalization on the nutritional status and prooxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB) of the patients with myocardial infarction (MI).Methods: This study was conducted on 57 patients diagnosed with MI with the mean age of 58.44±12.80 years. The patients were admitted to the cardiac care unit (CCU) of Ghaem Hospital in Mashhad, Iran. Nutritional status of the patients was assessed using the nutritional risk screening (NRS-2002) questionnaire. In addition, anthropometric and biochemical parameters and their changes were evaluated. PAB was also assessed as an oxidative stress marker. In total, 15 patients stayed in the hospital for more than one week. The measurements were performed upon admission and discharge.Results: Upon admission, 49.1% of the patients were well-nourished, and 50.9% were at nutritional risk. As expected, the patients were overweight (36.8%) or obese (19.2%), and all the measures of adiposity were high. Well-nourished patients had lower serum PAB comparatively, while the difference was not statistically significant. The prevalence of the suboptimal nutrition index increased from 46.7% upon admission to 53.3% upon discharge. However, the increase was not considered significant due to the small sample size. Serum PAB increased within one week after admission, while the change was not significant (P=0.249).Conclusion: According to the results, the prevalence of suboptimal nutrition was high in the MI patients in Iran and increases during hospitalization

    Prooxidant-antioxidant balance in stroke patients and 6-month prognosis

    BACKGROUND Oxidative stress is thought to play an important role in the pathogenesis of stroke. METHODS In the present study, we assessed the extent of oxidative stress in the sera of 120 patients in the first 24 hours after the onset of stroke and 80 healthy control subjects using a novel assay of prooxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB) that can measure the prooxidant burden and the antioxidant capacity simultaneously in one assay, thereby giving a redox index. RESULTS In stroke patients median serum PAB values were significantly higher than that of the control group [125.50 (103.36 - 151.80) vs 43.40 (29.77 - 77.01), p 0.05). Median Serum PAB values were not significantly different in patients with different outcomes based on their 6-month prognosis (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS We conclude that serum PAB values are elevated in patients with stroke, indicating a heightened state of oxidative stress, but do not distinguish between stroke types or predict 6-month prognosis

    BACKGROUND: Metabolic&nbsp;syndrome is defined by insulin resistance and a clustering of other cardiovascular risk factors. Crocin is a carotenoid derived from the stigmas of the saffron flower and had previously been shown to affect lipid profile. However, the mechanism for this function is not well understood. The present trial aimed to investigate the possible effect of crocin on plasma levels of cholesteryl ester transfer protein and lipid profile in individuals with metabolic syndrome. METHODS: This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, clinical trial consisting of an 8-week treatment with crocin, or placebo tablets between April and June 2014, in the Nutrition Clinic of Ghaem Teaching Hospital, Mashhad, Iran. Participants were randomly assigned to take a 30 mg/day crocin (n = 22) in the intervention group or placebo (n = 22) in the control group. Anthropometric, hematological and biochemical parameters were measured and recorded during pre and post-treatment periods. RESULTS: Whilst plasma cholesteryl ester transfer protein was&nbsp;increased in the group taking the crocin tablet by 27.81% during the trial period (P = 0.013), the difference between the crocin and placebo groups was not significant (P = 0.116). Moreover, the percent changes in cholesterol (P = 0.702), triglyceride (P = 0.080), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (P = 0.986), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (P = 0.687) and fasting blood glucose (P = 0.614) did not differ significantly between intervention and control groups. CONCLUSION: Although crocin supplements increased the serum cholesteryl ester transfer protein in patients with metabolic syndrome, this change was not significant between treatment and placebo groups. &nbsp;</p
