In this Election Briefing Note, we assess what has happened to living standards under Labour, setting out how average incomes, income inequality and poverty have changed since 1996- 97. We compare these changes with what happened under previous governments, and highlight where there have been differences between Labour's first and second terms
Secukinumab versus adalimumab for psoriatic arthritis: comparative effectiveness up to 48 weeks using a matching-adjusted indirect comparison
Secukinumab and adalimumab are approved for adults with active psoriatic arthritis (PsA). In the absence of direct randomized controlled trial (RCT) data, matching-adjusted indirect comparison can estimate the comparative effectiveness in anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-naïve populations. Individual patient data from the FUTURE 2 RCT (secukinumab vs. placebo; N = 299) were adjusted to match baseline characteristics of the ADEPT RCT (adalimumab vs. placebo; N = 313). Logistic regression determined adjustment weights for age, body weight, sex, race, methotrexate use, psoriasis affecting ≥ 3% of body surface area, Psoriasis Area and Severity Index score, Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability Index score, presence of dactylitis and enthesitis, and previous anti-TNF therapy. Recalculated secukinumab outcomes were compared with adalimumab outcomes at weeks 12 (placebo-adjusted), 16, 24, and 48 (nonplacebo-adjusted). After matching, the effective sample size for FUTURE 2 was 101. Week 12 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) response rates were not significantly different between secukinumab and adalimumab. Week 16 ACR 20 and 50 response rates were higher for secukinumab 150 mg than for adalimumab (P = 0.017, P = 0.033), as was ACR 50 for secukinumab 300 mg (P = 0.030). Week 24 ACR 20 and 50 were higher for secukinumab 150 mg than for adalimumab (P = 0.001, P = 0.019), as was ACR 20 for secukinumab 300 mg (P = 0.048). Week 48 ACR 20 was higher for secukinumab 150 and 300 mg than for adalimumab (P = 0.002, P = 0.027), as was ACR 50 for secukinumab 300 mg (P = 0.032). In our analysis, patients with PsA receiving secukinumab were more likely to achieve higher ACR responses through 1 year (weeks 16-48) than those treated with adalimumab. Although informative, these observations rely on a subgroup of patients from FUTURE 2 and thus should be considered interim until the ongoing head-to-head RCT EXCEED can validate these findings. Using Adobe Flash Lite on mobile phones for psychological research: reaction time measurement reliability and inter-device variability
Mobile telephones have significant potential for use in psychological research, possessing unique characteristics—not least their ubiquity—that may make them useful tools for psychologists. We examined whether it is possible to measure reaction times (RTs) accurately using Adobe Flash Lite on mobile phones. We ran simple and choice RT experiments on two widely available mobile phones, a Nokia 6110 Navigator and a Sony Ericsson W810i, using a wireless application protocol (WAP) connection to access the Internet from the devices. RTs were compared within subjects with those obtained using a Linux-based millisecond-accurate measurement system. Results show that measured RTs were significantly longer on mobile devices, and that overall RTs and distribution of RTs varied across device
An Analysis of the Quasicontinuum Method
The aim of this paper is to present a streamlined and fully three-dimensional
version of the quasicontinuum (QC) theory of Tadmor et al. and to analyze its
accuracy and convergence characteristics. Specifically, we assess the effect of
the summation rules on accuracy; we determine the rate of convergence of the
method in the presence of strong singularities, such as point loads; and we
assess the effect of the refinement tolerance, which controls the rate at which
new nodes are inserted in the model, on the development of dislocation

Quantum affine Cartan matrices, Poincare series of binary polyhedral groups, and reflection representations
We first review some invariant theoretic results about the finite subgroups
of SU(2) in a quick algebraic way by using the McKay correspondence and quantum
affine Cartan matrices. By the way it turns out that some parameters
(a,b,h;p,q,r) that one usually associates with such a group and hence with a
simply-laced Coxeter-Dynkin diagram have a meaningful definition for the
non-simply-laced diagrams, too, and as a byproduct we extend Saito's formula
for the determinant of the Cartan matrix to all cases. Returning to invariant
theory we show that for each irreducible representation i of a binary
tetrahedral, octahedral, or icosahedral group one can find a homomorphism into
a finite complex reflection group whose defining reflection representation

Point-of-Care Testing for Pharyngitis in the Pharmacy.
Pharyngitis (also known as sore throat) is a common, predominately viral, self-limiting condition which can be symptomatically managed without antibiotic treatment. Inappropriate antibiotic use for pharyngitis contributes to the development and spread of antibiotic resistance. However, a small proportion of sore throats caused by group A streptococcal (GAS) infection may benefit from the provision of antibiotics. Establishing the cause of infection is therefore an important step in effective antibiotic stewardship. Point-of-care (POC) tests, where results are available within minutes, can distinguish between viral and GAS pharyngitis and can therefore guide treatment in primary healthcare settings such as community pharmacies, which are often the first point of contact with the healthcare system. In this opinion article, the evidence for the use of POC testing in the community pharmacy has been discussed. Evidence suggests that pharmacy POC testing can promote appropriate antibiotic use and reduce the need for general practitioner consultations. Challenges to implementation include cost, training and 'who prescribes', with country and regional differences presenting a particular issue. Despite these challenges, POC testing for pharyngitis has become widely available in pharmacies in some countries and may represent a strategy to contain antibiotic resistance and contribute to antimicrobial stewardship
A Robust Solution Procedure for Hyperelastic Solids with Large Boundary Deformation
Compressible Mooney-Rivlin theory has been used to model hyperelastic solids,
such as rubber and porous polymers, and more recently for the modeling of soft
tissues for biomedical tissues, undergoing large elastic deformations. We
propose a solution procedure for Lagrangian finite element discretization of a
static nonlinear compressible Mooney-Rivlin hyperelastic solid. We consider the
case in which the boundary condition is a large prescribed deformation, so that
mesh tangling becomes an obstacle for straightforward algorithms. Our solution
procedure involves a largely geometric procedure to untangle the mesh: solution
of a sequence of linear systems to obtain initial guesses for interior nodal
positions for which no element is inverted. After the mesh is untangled, we
take Newton iterations to converge to a mechanical equilibrium. The Newton
iterations are safeguarded by a line search similar to one used in
optimization. Our computational results indicate that the algorithm is up to 70
times faster than a straightforward Newton continuation procedure and is also
more robust (i.e., able to tolerate much larger deformations). For a few
extremely large deformations, the deformed mesh could only be computed through
the use of an expensive Newton continuation method while using a tight

The Symbolic and cancellation-free formulae for Schur elements
In this paper we give a symbolical formula and a cancellation-free formula
for the Schur elements associated to the simple modules of the degenerate
cyclotomic Hecke algebras. As some direct applications, we show that the Schur
elements are symmetric with respect to the natural symmetric group action and
are integral coefficients polynomials and we give a different proof of
Ariki-Mathas-Rui's criterion on the semi-simplicity of degenerate cyclotomic
