Effect of stoichiometry on oxygen incorporation in MgB2 thin films
The amount of oxygen incorporated into MgB2 thin films upon exposure to
atmospheric gasses is found to depend strongly on the material's stoichiometry.
Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy was used to monitor changes in oxygen
incorporation resulting from exposure to: (a) ambient atmosphere, (b) humid
atmospheres, (c) anneals in air and (d) anneals in oxygen. The study
investigated thin-film samples with compositions that were systematically
varied from Mg0.9B2 to Mg1.1B2. A significant surface oxygen contamination was
observed in all of these films. The oxygen content in the bulk of the film, on
the other hand, increased significantly only in Mg rich films and in films
exposed to humid atmospheres.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl
Parametric down-conversion from a wave-equations approach: geometry and absolute brightness
Using the approach of coupled wave equations, we consider spontaneous
parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in the narrow-band regime and its
relationship to classical nonlinear processes such as sum-frequency generation.
We find simple expressions in terms of mode overlap integrals for the absolute
pair production rate into single spatial modes, and simple relationships
between the efficiencies of the classical and quantum processes. The results,
obtained with Green function techniques, are not specific to any geometry or
nonlinear crystal. The theory is applied to both degenerate and non-degenerate
SPDC. We also find a time-domain expression for the correlation function
between filtered signal and idler fields.Comment: 10 pages, no figure
Hyperpolarizabilities for the one-dimensional infinite single-electron periodic systems: II. Dipole-dipole versus current-current correlations
Based on Takayama-Lin-Liu-Maki model, analytical expressions for the
third-harmonic generation, DC Kerr effect, DC-induced second harmonic optical
Kerr effect, optical Kerr effect or intensity-dependent index of refraction and
DC-electric-field-induced optical rectification are derived under the static
current-current() correlation for one-dimensional infinite chains. The
results of hyperpolarizabilities under correlation are then compared
with those obtained using the dipole-dipole () correlation. The comparison
shows that the conventional correlation, albeit quite successful for
the linear case, is incorrect for studying the nonlinear optical properties of
periodic systems.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Possible dibaryons in the quark cluster model
In the framework of RGM, the binding energy of one channel
() and are studied in the
chiral SU(3) quark cluster model. It is shown that the binding energies of the
systems are a few tens of MeV. The behavior of the chiral field is also
investigated by comparing the results with those in the SU(2) and the extended
SU(2) chiral quark models. It is found that the symmetry property of the
system makes the contribution of the relative kinetic energy
operator between two clusters attractive. This is very beneficial for forming
the bound dibaryon. Meanwhile the chiral-quark field coupling also plays a very
important role on binding. The S-wave phase shifts and the corresponding
scattering lengths of the systems are also given.Comment: LeTex with 2 ps figure
Nonlinear optical probe of tunable surface electrons on a topological insulator
We use ultrafast laser pulses to experimentally demonstrate that the
second-order optical response of bulk single crystals of the topological
insulator BiSe is sensitive to its surface electrons. By performing
surface doping dependence measurements as a function of photon polarization and
sample orientation we show that second harmonic generation can simultaneously
probe both the surface crystalline structure and the surface charge of
BiSe. Furthermore, we find that second harmonic generation using
circularly polarized photons reveals the time-reversal symmetry properties of
the system and is surprisingly robust against surface charging, which makes it
a promising tool for spectroscopic studies of topological surfaces and buried
interfaces
Anti-correlation and subsector structure in financial systems
With the random matrix theory, we study the spatial structure of the Chinese
stock market, American stock market and global market indices. After taking
into account the signs of the components in the eigenvectors of the
cross-correlation matrix, we detect the subsector structure of the financial
systems. The positive and negative subsectors are anti-correlated each other in
the corresponding eigenmode. The subsector structure is strong in the Chinese
stock market, while somewhat weaker in the American stock market and global
market indices. Characteristics of the subsector structures in different
markets are revealed.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 4 table
Independent ferroelectric contributions and rare-earth-induced polarization reversal in multiferroic TbMn2O5
Three independent contributions to the magnetically induced spontaneous
polarization of multiferroic TbMn2O5 are uniquely separated by optical second
harmonic generation and an analysis in terms of Landau theory. Two of them are
related to the magnetic Mn3+/4+ order and are independent of applied fields of
up to 7 T. The third contribution is related to the long-range
antiferromagnetic Tb3+ order. It shows a drastic decrease upon the application
of a magnetic field and mediates the change of sign of the spontaneous electric
polarization in TbMn2O5. The close relationship between the rare-earth
long-range order and the non-linear optical properties points to isotropic
Tb-Tb exchange and oxygen spin polarization as mechanism for this rare-earth
induced ferroelectricity.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
