    Carbon-Nanotubes-Supported Pd Nanoparticles for Alcohol Oxidations in Fuel Cells: Effect of Number of Nanotube Walls on Activity

    Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are well known electrocatalyst supports due to their high electrical conductivity, structural stability, and high surface area. Here, we demonstrate that the number of inner tubes or walls of CNTs also have a significant promotion effect on the activity of supported Pd nanoparticles (NPs) for alcohol oxidation reactions of direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs). Pd NPs with similar particle size (2.1–2.8 nm) were uniformly assembled on CNTs with different number of walls. The results indicate that Pd NPs supported on triple-walled CNTs (TWNTs) have the highest mass activity and stability for methanol, ethanol, and ethylene glycol oxidation reactions, as compared to Pd NPs supported on single-walled and multi-walled CNTs. Such a specific promotion effect of TWNTs on the electrocatalytic activity of Pd NPs is not related to the contribution of metal impurities in CNTs, oxygen-functional groups of CNTs or surface area of CNTs and Pd NPs. A facile charge transfer mechanism via electron tunneling between the outer wall and inner tubes of CNTs under electrochemical driving force is proposed for the significant promotion effect of TWNTs for the alcohol oxidation reactions in alkaline solutions

    Relationship detection based on object semantic inference and attention mechanisms

    Detecting relations among objects is a crucial task for image understanding. However, each relationship involves different objects pair combinations, and different objects pair combinations express diverse interactions. This makes the relationships, based just on visual features, a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective relationship detection model, which is based on object semantic inference and attention mechanisms. Our model is trained to detect relation triples, such as , . To overcome the high diversity of visual appearances, the semantic inference module and the visual features are combined to complement each others. We also introduce two different attention mechanisms for object feature refinement and phrase feature refinement. In order to derive a more detailed and comprehensive representation for each object, the object feature refinement module refines the representation of each object by querying over all the other objects in the image. The phrase feature refinement module is proposed in order to make the phrase feature more effective, and to automatically focus on relative parts, to improve the visual relationship detection task. We validate our model on Visual Genome Relationship dataset. Our proposed model achieves competitive results compared to the state-of-the-art method MOTIFNET

    Effect of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy on Wound Complications Post-Pancreatectomy

    Surgical site infection (SSI) and incisional hernia are common complications after major pancreatectomy. We investigated the effects of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) on short- and long-term wound outcomes in patients undergoing pancreatectomy. A randomized controlled trial comparing the effect of NPWT with standard surgical dressing (SSD) on wounds was performed in 265 patients undergoing open gastrointestinal resections from 2012 to 2016. We performed a subset analysis of 73 patients who underwent pancreatectomy. Wound complications in the first 30 days and incisional hernia rates were assessed. There were 33 (45%) female patients in the study and the average BMI was 27.6. The pancreaticoduodectomy rate was 68 per cent, whereas 27 per cent of patients underwent distal or subtotal pancreatectomy, and 4 per cent total pancreatectomy. Incisional hernia rates were 32 per cent and 14 per cent between the SSD and NPWT groups, respectively
