Hanbury Brown and Twiss Correlations of Anderson Localized Waves

    Get PDF
When light waves propagate through disordered photonic lattices, they can eventually become localized due to multiple scattering effects. Here we show experimentally that while the evolution and localization of the photon density distribution is similar in the two cases of diagonal and off-diagonal disorder, the density-density correlation carries a distinct signature of the type of disorder. We show that these differences reflect a symmetry in the spectrum and eigenmodes that exists in off-diagonally disordered lattices but is absent in lattices with diagonal disorder.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, comments welcom

    Coalescence Behavior of Gold Nanoparticles

    Get PDF
The tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOAB)-stabilized gold nanoparticles have been successfully fabricated. After an annealing of the as-synthesized nanoparticles at 300 °C for 30 min, the coalescence behavior of gold nanoparticles has been investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy in detail. Two types of coalescence, one being an ordered combination of two or more particles in appropriate orientations through twinning, and the other being an ordered combination of two small particles with facets through a common lattice plane, have been observed

    Thermodynamical fingerprints of fractal spectra

We investigate the thermodynamics of model systems exhibiting two-scale fractal spectra. In particular, we present both analytical and numerical studies on the temperature dependence of the vibrational and electronic specific heats. For phonons, and for bosons in general, we show that the average specific heat can be associated to the average (power law) density of states. The corrections to this average behavior are log-periodic oscillations which can be traced back to the self-similarity of the spectral staircase. In the electronic case, even if the thermodynamical quantities exhibit a strong dependence on the particle number, regularities arise when special cases are considered. Applications to substitutional and hierarchical structures are discussed.Comment: 8 latex pages, 9 embedded PS figure

Exciton Optical Absorption in Self-Similar Aperiodic Lattices

    Get PDF
Exciton optical absorption in self-similar aperiodic one-dimensional systems is considered, focusing our attention on Thue-Morse and Fibonacci lattices as canonical examples. The absorption line shape is evaluated by solving the microscopic equations of motion of the Frenkel-exciton problem on the lattice, in which on-site energies take on two values, according to the Thue-Morse or Fibonacci sequences. Results are compared to those obtained in random lattices with the same stechiometry and size. We find that aperiodic order causes the occurrence of well-defined characteristic features in the absorption spectra which clearly differ from the case of random systems, indicating a most peculiar exciton dynamics. We successfully explain the obtained spectra in terms of the two-center problem. This allows us to establish the origin of all the absorption lines by considering the self-similar aperiodic lattices as composed of two-center blocks, within the same spirit of the renormalization group ideas.Comment: 16 pages in REVTeX 3.0. 2 figures on request to F. Periodic features in the Dynamic Structure Factor of the Quasiperiodic Period-doubling Lattice

We present an exact real-space renormalization group (RSRG) method for evaluating the dynamic structure factor of an infinite one-dimensional quasiperiodic period-doubling (PD) lattice. We observe that for every normal mode frequency of the chain, the dynamic structure factor S(q,ω)S(q,\omega) always exhibits periodicity with respect to the wave vector qq and the presence of such periodicity even in absence of translational invariance in the system is quite surprising. Our analysis shows that this periodicity in S(q,ω)S(q,\omega) actually indicates the presence of delocalized phonon modes in the PD chain. The Brillouin Zones of the lattice are found to have a hierarchical structure and the dispersion relation gives both the acoustic as well as optical branches. The phonon dispersion curves have a nested structure and we have shown that it is actually the superposition of the dispersion curves of an infinite set of periodic lattices.Comment: 9 pages, 3 postscript figures, REVTeX, To appear in Phys. Pure point diffraction and cut and project schemes for measures: The smooth case

We present cut and project formalism based on measures and continuous weight functions of sufficiently fast decay. The emerging measures are strongly almost periodic. The corresponding dynamical systems are compact groups and homomorphic images of the underlying torus. In particular, they are strictly ergodic with pure point spectrum and continuous eigenfunctions. Their diffraction can be calculated explicitly. Our results cover and extend corresponding earlier results on dense Dirac combs and continuous weight functions with compact support. They also mark a clear difference in terms of factor maps between the case of continuous and non-continuous weight functions.Comment: 30 page

Self-similarity and novel sample-length-dependence of conductance in quasiperiodic lateral magnetic superlattices

We study the transport of electrons in a Fibonacci magnetic superlattice produced on a two-dimensional electron gas modulated by parallel magnetic field stripes arranged in a Fibonacci sequence. Both the transmission coefficient and conductance exhibit self-similarity and the six-circle property. The presence of extended states yields a finite conductivity at infinite length, that may be detected as an abrupt change in the conductance as the Fermi energy is varied, much as a metal-insulator transition. This is a unique feature of transport in this new kind of structure, arising from its inherent two-dimensional nature.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, revtex, important revisions made. to be published in Phys.
