Extragalactic Radio Sources and the WMAP Cold Spot
We detect a dip of 20-45% in the surface brightness and number counts of NVSS
sources smoothed to a few degrees at the location of the WMAP cold spot. The
dip has structure on scales of approximately 1-10 degrees. Together with
independent all-sky wavelet analyses, our results suggest that the dip in
extragalactic brightness and number counts and the WMAP cold spot are
physically related, i.e., that the coincidence is neither a statistical anomaly
nor a WMAP foreground correction problem. If the cold spot does originate from
structures at modest redshifts, as we suggest, then there is no remaining need
for non-Gaussian processes at the last scattering surface of the CMB to explain
the cold spot. The late integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect, already seen
statistically for NVSS source counts, can now be seen to operate on a single
region. To create the magnitude and angular size of the WMAP cold spot requires
a ~140 Mpc radius completely empty void at z<=1 along this line of sight. This
is far outside the current expectations of the concordance cosmology, and adds
to the anomalies seen in the CMB.Comment: revised version, ApJ, in pres
Competing Harvesting Strategies In A Simulated Population Under Uncertainty
We present a case study of the use of simulation modelling to develop and test strategies for managing populations under uncertainty. Strategies that meet a stock conservation criterion under a base case scenario are subjected to a set of robustness trials, including biased and highly variable abundance estimates and poaching. Strategy performance is assessed with respect to a conservation criterion, the revenues achieved and their variability. Strategies that harvest heavily, even when the population is apparently very large, perform badly in the robustness trials. Setting a threshold below which harvesting does not take place, and above which all individuals are harvested, does not provide effective protection against over-harvesting. Strategies that rely on population growth rates rather than estimates of population size are more robust to biased estimates. The strategies that are most robust to uncertainty are simple, involving harvesting a relatively small proportion of the population each year. The simulation modelling approach to exploring harvesting strategies is suggested as a useful tool for the assessment of the performance of competing strategies under uncertainty
Centrifugation and capillarity integrated into a multiple analyte whole blood analyser
A unique clinical chemistry analyser is described which processes
90 ÎŒl of whole blood (fingerstick or venous) into multiple aliquots of diluted plasma and reports the results of 12 tests in 14 min. To perform a panel of tests, the operator applies the unmetered sample directly into a single use, 8 cm diameter plastic rotor which contains the required liquid diluent and dry reagents. Using centrifugal and capillary forces, the rotor meters the required amount of blood, separates the red cells, meters the plasma, meters the diluent, mixes the fluids, distributes the fluid to the reaction cuvettes and mixes the reagents and the diluted plasma in the cuvettes. The instrument monitors the reagent reactions simultaneously using nine wavelengths, calculates the results from the absorbance data, and reports the results
Evidence of Rapid Phenocryst Growth of Olivine During Ascent in Basalts From the Big Pine Volcanic Field: Application of OlivineâMelt Thermometry and Hygrometry at the Liquidus
The Quaternary Big Pine (BP) volcanic field in eastern California is notable for the occurrence of mantle xenoliths in several flows. This points to rapid ascent of basalt through the crust and precludes prolonged storage in a crustal reservoir. In this study, the hypothesis of phenocryst growth during ascent is tested for several basalts (13â7 wt% MgO) and shown to be viable. Phenocrysts of olivine and clinopyroxene frequently display diffusionâlimited growth textures, and clinopyroxene compositions are consistent with polybaric crystallization. When the most Mgârich olivine in each sample is paired with the wholeârock composition, resulting Fe2+âMgKD(olivineâmelt) values (0.31â0.36) match those calculated from literature models (0.32â0.36). Application of a Mgâ and a Niâbased olivineâmelt thermometer from the literature, both calibrated on the same experimental data set, leads to two sets of temperatures that vary linearly with wholeârock MgO wt%. Because the Ni thermometer is independent of water content, it provides the actual temperature at the onset of olivine crystallization (1247â1097°C), whereas the Mg thermometer gives the temperature under anhydrous conditions and thus allows ÎT (=TMg â TNi = depression of liquidus due to water) to be obtained. The average ÎT for all samples is ~59°C, which is consistent with analyzed water contents of 1.5â3.0 wt% in olivineâhosted melt inclusions from the literature. Because the application of olivineâmelt thermometry/hygrometry at the liquidus only requires microprobe analyses of olivine combined with wholeârock compositions, it can be used to obtain large global data sets of the temperature and water contents of basalts from different tectonic settings.Plain Language SummaryBasaltic lavas are a window into their mantle source regions, which is why it is important to determine their temperatures and water contents. In this study, a new approach that allows these two parameters to be quantified is demonstrated for basalts from the Big Pine volcanic field, CA. They were targeted because many contain chunks of dense mantle rocks, which precludes storage in a crustal magma chamber and points to direct ascent from the mantle to the surface along fractures. Two hypotheses are proposed, tested, and shown to be viable in this study: (1) olivine crystallized in the basalts during ascent, and (2) the most Mgârich olivine analyzed in each basalt represents the first olivine to grow during ascent. This enables the most Mgârich olivine to be paired with the wholeârock composition in the application of olivineâmelt thermometry and hygrometry. The results match those from published, independent studies. The success of this approach paves the way for the attainment of large, highâquality data sets for basalts from a wide variety of tectonic settings. Solar Neutron Events of October-November 2003
During the period when the Sun was intensely active on October-November 2003,
two remarkable solar neutron events were observed by the ground-based neutron
monitors. On October 28, 2003, in association with an X17.2 large flare, solar
neutrons were detected with high statistical significance (6.4 sigma) by the
neutron monitor at Tsumeb, Namibia. On November 4, 2003, in association with an
X28 class flare, relativistic solar neutrons were observed by the neutron
monitors at Haleakala in Hawaii and Mexico City, and by the solar neutron
telescope at Mauna Kea in Hawaii simultaneously. Clear excesses were observed
at the same time by these detectors, with the significance calculated as 7.5
sigma for Haleakala, and 5.2 sigma for Mexico City. The detector onboard the
INTEGRAL satellite observed a high flux of hard X-rays and gamma-rays at the
same time in these events. By using the time profiles of the gamma-ray lines,
we can explain the time profile of the neutron monitor. It appears that

An Adaptive Decision Framework for the Conservation of a Threatened Plant
This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from http://www.fwspubs.org/.Mead's milkweed Asclepias meadii, a long-lived perennial herb of tallgrass prairie and glade communities of the central United States, is a species designated as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Challenges to its successful management include the facts that much about its life history is unknown, its age at reproductive maturity is very advanced, certain life stages are practically unobservable, its productivity is responsive to unpredictable environmental events, and most of the known populations occur on private lands unprotected by any legal conservation instrument. One critical source of biological uncertainty is the degree to which fire promotes growth and reproductive response in the plant. To aid in its management, we developed a prototype population-level state-dependent decision-making framework that explicitly accounts for this uncertainty and for uncertainties related to stochastic environmental effects and vital rates. To parameterize the decision model, we used estimates found in the literature, and we analyzed data from a long-term monitoring program where fates of individual plants were observed through time. We demonstrate that different optimal courses of action are followed according to how one believes that fire influences reproductive response, and we show that the action taken for certain population states is informative for resolving uncertainty about competing beliefs regarding the effect of fire. We advocate the use of a model-predictive approach for the management of rare populations, particularly when management uncertainty is profound. Over time, an adaptive management approach should reduce uncertainty and improve management performance as predictions of management outcome generated under competing models are continually informed and updated by monitoring data
Analytical solutions for two heteronuclear atoms in a ring trap
We consider two heteronuclear atoms interacting with a short-range
potential and confined in a ring trap. By taking the Bethe-ansatz-type
wavefunction and considering the periodic boundary condition properly, we
derive analytical solutions for the heteronuclear system. The eigen-energies
represented in terms of quasi-momentums can then be determined by solving a set
of coupled equations. We present a number of results, which display different
features from the case of identical atoms. Our result can be reduced to the
well-known Lieb-Liniger solution when two interacting atoms have the same

Infant mental health home visiting therapists- reflective supervision self- efficacy in community practice settings
In recent years, there has been an increase in the research on reflective supervision, including the development of tools designed to measure reflective practice in the context of reflective supervision. The Reflective Supervision Self- Efficacy Scale for Supervisees (RSSESS) is a self- report measure that has been used in previous evaluations and is designed to assess perceived reflective practice self- efficacy for Infant Mental Health- Home Visiting (IMH- HV) therapists. Properties of the RSSESS including factor structure and reliability are explored in a first study that lays the foundation for the use of the RSSESS in an IMH- HV evaluation in the State of Michigan. IMH- HV therapists completed the RSSESS at 4 time points over a 12- month period and also completed a Clinician Profile Form that included questions about their IMH background and their work experience, including job satisfaction and burnout. Results indicated that the RSSESS is a reliable tool to measure change in reflective practice skills. IMH- HV therapists demonstrated growth in their use of reflective practice skills with families and their observational skills over the 12- month period.
