Ethnic parity in labour market outcomes for benefit claimants
We use UK administrative data to estimate the differential in labour market outcomes between Ethnic Minority benefit claimants and otherwise identical Whites. In many cases, Minorities and Whites are simply too different for satisfactory estimates to be calculated and results are sensitive to the methodology used. This calls into question previous results based on simple regression techniques, which may hide the fact that observationally different ethnic groups are being compared by parametric extrapolation. For some groups, however, we could calculate satisfactory results. Ethnic parity in labour market outcomes for benefit claimants in Great Britain
Accurate estimates of the extent of ethnic parity amongst benefit claimants are very important for policymakers who provide interventions for these groups. We use new administrative data on benefit claimants in Great Britain to document differences in labour market outcomes between Ethnic Minority and White claimants, both before and after controlling for rich observable characteristics. We do so using a variety of methods, from OLS to propensity score matching to difference-in-differences. We find that, in many cases, Minorities and Whites are simply too different for satisfactory estimates to be calculated, and that results are sensitive to the methodology used. This calls into question previous results based on simple regression techniques, which may hide the fact that observationally different ethnic groups are being compared by parametric extrapolation. For Income Support and Incapacity Benefit claimants, however, we could calculate satisfactory results. Student resilience : exploring the positive case for resilience
Resilience is a word that is increasingly being used alongside student welfare, but what is meant by resilience?
This paper takes a closer look at the subject of student resilience and I hope will encourage greater debate, exploration and fresh perspectives. As the paper outlines, while the study of student resilience is still very much in its infancy in the UK, there is recognition that student mental wellbeing is a growing challenge, and one which needs greater consideration.
While overall student satisfaction at UK universities is rightly high, it has become clear that not all students find the transition to university life a straightforward one. Unite Students provides a home to around 50,000 students across the UK and our own research findings from the past few years demonstrate that some students can and do face difficulties. This is what prompted us to dedicate a significant portion of our annual Unite Students Insight Report in 2016 to finding out more about studentsâ own views on resilience by trying to identify some of the challenges surrounding student mental health, isolation and stress. These research insights support the detailed operational data from which we and our partner universities have seen an increase in welfare-related incidents over the last two years, and which encourage us to continually review and improve our operational processes and support services
Orienting to Emotion in Computer-Mediated Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Exploring emotions is a defining feature of psychotherapy. This study explores how therapists explore emotions when they cannot see or hear their clients. In analysing 1,279 sessions of online text-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (<i>CBT</i>) we focused on therapistsâ commiserations (e.g., âIâm sorry to hear thatâ) and their affective inferences (e.g., âthat sounds very scary for youâ). Both practices routinely prefaced moves to pursue a range of therapeutic activities, many of which did not prioritise sustained focus on the emotion that had just been oriented to. By separating message composition from message transmission, the modality used for these therapy sessions enabled therapists to combine orientations to emotion with attempts to shift the focus of discussion. Our analysis finds that although physically co-present and computer-mediated psychotherapy share a common focus on emotional experience, the modality used for therapy can be relevant in the design and use of these orientations.
