    Evidence for quenched chiral logs

    Get PDF
Using the pole shifting procedure of the modified quenched approximation (MQA) to cure the exceptional configuration problem, accurate hadron hadron spectrum calculations can be obtained at very light quark mass. Here we use the MQA to extend and improve our previous investigation of chiral logs in the pion mass. At beta=5.7 for Wilson fermion, we see clear evidence for quenched chiral logarithms in the pion mass as a function of quark mass. The size of the observed chiral log exponent delta is in good agreement with the value obtained from a direct calculation of the eta' hairpin diagram.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, Lattice 98 tal

The role of the real-time simulation facility, SIMFAC, in the design, development and performance verification of the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (SRMS) with man-in-the-loop

    Get PDF
The SIMFAC has played a vital role in the design, development, and performance verification of the shuttle remote manipulator system (SRMS) to be installed in the space shuttle orbiter. The facility provides for realistic man-in-the-loop operation of the SRMS by an operator in the operator complex, a flightlike crew station patterned after the orbiter aft flight deck with all necessary man machine interface elements, including SRMS displays and controls and simulated out-of-the-window and CCTV scenes. The characteristics of the manipulator system, including arm and joint servo dynamics and control algorithms, are simulated by a comprehensive mathematical model within the simulation subsystem of the facility. Major studies carried out using SIMFAC include: SRMS parameter sensitivity evaluations; the development, evaluation, and verification of operating procedures; and malfunction simulation and analysis of malfunction performance. Among the most important and comprehensive man-in-the-loop simulations carried out to date on SIMFAC are those which support SRMS performance verification and certification when the SRMS is part of the integrated orbiter-manipulator system

The state of blacks in higher education

    This is a study initiated by the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO) that provides an overview on the state of blacks in higher education from 1986 through 2005. It focuses on bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees earned by black Americans. It also examines the advancement, or lack thereof, of black faculty members. The study uses data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data Series and the Survey of Doctorial Recipients.blacks; higher education;

Non-birational twisted derived equivalences in abelian GLSMs

In this paper we discuss some examples of abelian gauged linear sigma models realizing twisted derived equivalences between non-birational spaces, and realizing geometries in novel fashions. Examples of gauged linear sigma models with non-birational Kahler phases are a relatively new phenomenon. Most of our examples involve gauged linear sigma models for complete intersections of quadric hypersurfaces, though we also discuss some more general cases and their interpretation. We also propose a more general understanding of the relationship between Kahler phases of gauged linear sigma models, namely that they are related by (and realize) Kuznetsov's `homological projective duality.' Along the way, we shall see how `noncommutative spaces' (in Kontsevich's sense) are realized physically in gauged linear sigma models, providing examples of new types of conformal field theories. Throughout, the physical realization of stacks plays a key role in interpreting physical structures appearing in GLSMs, and we find that stacks are implicitly much more common in GLSMs than previously realized.Comment: 54 pages, LaTeX; v2: typo fixe

Chiral Perturbation Theory for the Quenched Approximation of QCD

[This version is a minor revision of a previously submitted preprint. Only references have been changed.] We describe a technique for constructing the effective chiral theory for quenched QCD. The effective theory which results is a lagrangian one, with a graded symmetry group which mixes Goldstone bosons and fermions, and with a definite (though slightly peculiar) set of Feynman rules. The straightforward application of these rules gives automatic cancellation of diagrams which would arise from virtual quark loops. The techniques are used to calculate chiral logarithms in fK/fπf_K/f_\pi, mπm_\pi, mKm_K, and the ratio of sˉs\langle{\bar s}s\rangle to uˉu\langle{\bar u}u\rangle. The leading finite-volume corrections to these quantities are also computed. Problems for future study are described.Comment: 14 page

Partially quenched chiral perturbation theory without Φ0\Phi_0

    Get PDF
This paper completes the argument that lattice simulations of partially quenched QCD can provide quantitative information about QCD itself, with the aid of partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. A barrier to doing this has been the inclusion of Φ0\Phi_0, the partially quenched generalization of the η\eta', in previous calculations in the partially quenched effective theory. This invalidates the low energy perturbative expansion, gives rise to many new unknown parameters, and makes it impossible to reliably calculate the relation between the partially quenched theory and low energy QCD. We show that it is straightforward and natural to formulate partially quenched chiral perturbation theory without Φ0\Phi_0, and that the resulting theory contains the effective theory for QCD without the η\eta'. We also show that previous results, obtained including Φ0\Phi_0, can be reinterpreted as applying to the theory without Φ0\Phi_0. We contrast the situation with that in the quenched effective theory, where we explain why it is necessary to include Φ0\Phi_0. We also compare the derivation of chiral perturbation theory in partially quenched QCD with the standard derivation in unquenched QCD. We find that the former cannot be justified as rigorously as the latter, because of the absence of a physical Hilbert space. Finally, we present an encouraging result: unphysical double poles in certain correlation functions in partially quenched chiral perturbation theory can be shown to be a property of the underlying theory, given only the symmetries and some plausible assumptions.Comment: 45 pages, no figure

Electromagnetic Structure of Light Baryons in Lattice QCD

A method in which electromagnetic properties of hadrons are studied by direct simulation of dynamical photon effects is applied to the extraction of the isomultiplet structure of the octet baryons. Using 187 configurations at β=5.7\beta=5.7 with Wilson action, and up and down quark masses determined from the meson spectrum, the nucleon splitting is found to be 1.55(±0.56  stat)1.55(\pm 0.56\; \rm stat) MeV; the hyperon splittings are found to be Σ0Σ+=2.47±0.39\Sigma^{0}-\Sigma^{+}=2.47\pm 0.39, ΣΣ0=4.63±0.36\Sigma^{-}-\Sigma^{0}=4.63\pm 0.36, ΞΞ0=5.68±0.24\Xi^{-}-\Xi^{0}=5.68\pm 0.24 MeV. Estimated systematic corrections arising from finite volume and the quenched approximation are included in these results.Comment: Talk presented at LATTICE96(phenomenology

Chiral corrections to the axial charges of the octet baryons from quenched QCD

    Get PDF
We calculate one-loop correction to the axial charges of the octet baryons using quenched chiral perturbation theory, in order to understand chiral behavior of the axial charges in quenched approximation to quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In contrast to regular behavior of the full QCD chiral perturbation theory result, c0+cl2mπ2lnmπ2+c_0+c_{l2}m_\pi^2\,\ln{m_\pi^2}+\cdots, we find that the quenched chiral perturbation theory result, c0Q+(cl0Q+cl2Qmπ2)lnmπ2+c2Qmπ2+c_0^Q+(c_{l0}^Q+c_{l2}^Qm_\pi^2)\ln{m_\pi^2}+c_2^Q m_\pi^2+\cdots, is singular in the chiral limit.Comment: standard LaTeX, 16 pages, 4 epsf figure
