Nurses Knowledge, Skills, and Attitude Toward Electronic Health Records (EHR)

Information technology (IT) has been rapidly integrated into the healthcare industry, including nursing, and has the ability to reduce errors, cut cost, and enhance patient care. However, approximately 45% of the current nurse workforce lacks adequate training in computer skills, which may hinder the adoption of health-related IT in the workplace. Characteristics of Rogers\u27s diffusion of innovation (relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability) guided this project. This project was conducted to address the problem of IT adoption on a local level and was designed to assess whether simulation training on a generic electronic health record (EHR) system would improve the knowledge, skill, and attitude of nurses with little or no experience with EHR. A convenience sample of nurses (n = 13) unfamiliar with EHR was obtained by posting flyers in long-term care or home health agencies. The nurses completed the P.A.T.C.H. assessment scale v. 3 (2011) before and after participating in the one-time simulation training on EHR. Scores on the P.A.T.C.H. were calculated according to the established scoring system and revealed a positive increase nurses\u27 attitude and self-efficacy toward the EHR system. Posttest scores yielded an increase ranging from 0.5 to 5 points from pretest scores, with an average pretest score of 54.23 on a scale of 0-100. The results of this project are consistent with the literature and current research and illustrate the importance of addressing the need for interactive training. This project contributes to social change in practice by enhancing the awareness of EHR in nurses who are new users of IT and promoting the adoption of technology in healthcare

Seeking the Face Behind the Face: Rosenzweig and Nietzsche Opening to the Feminine Divine

This study begins with a reading of Franz Rosenzweig\u27s Star of Redemption and Friedrich Nietzsche\u27s Thus Spoke Zarathustra in a manner that offers evidence for what I call a feminine divine. In reading the Star against Zarathustra I explore how even as Rosenzweig appears to praise Nietzsche as being emblematic of Rosenzweig\u27s new thinking, Rosenzweig eventually finds Nietzsche falls short, (or, in other words, Rosenzweig critiques Nietzsche in suggesting his pagan roots prevent him from ever reaching Revelation). I suggest Nietzsche\u27s texts do indicate a type of divine inspiration, but it is one coming not from the Father God of male monotheism, but of a Mother God held latent in history and western philosophy. It is through this very defense of Nietzsche against Rosenzweig that I begin to articulate a hidden feminine divine. Through close readings of Nietzsche\u27s Zarathustra along with passages from Ecce Homo and Will to Power I defend Nietzsche against Rosenzweig\u27s critique. I also refer to a text held latent in both the Star and Zarathustra, Goethe\u27s Faust. It is through a reading of Nietzsche\u27s Zarathustra as it embodies notions of a feminine divine in Goethe\u27s Faust that I offer a more complex approach to a feminine divinity. Just as I suggest the key to my defense of Nietzsche consists in my recovering in his writings of a divine feminine, I also assert the significance in another major writer who was a contemporary of Nietzsche and Rosenzweig: Lou Andreas-Salomé. Known by some as the mother of psychoanalysis, Andreas-Salomé offers much in a development of a feminine divine originating in Rosenzweig\u27s and Nietzsche\u27s texts and continuing on to writings of French psychoanalytic philosophers Julia Kristeva, Luce Irigaray, and Hélène Cixous. In short, I lay the groundwork for developing a feminist philosophy of religion from Rosenzweig\u27s and Nietzsche\u27s texts following through Andreas-Salomè\u27s writing, using theorists in the French psychoanalytic tradition to move forward toward a contemporary feminist philosophy of religion that includes a feminine divine. I conclude by suggesting some practical applications of this feminist philosophy of religion that may be useful within the realm of inter-religious dialog as well as in feminist philosophy in general

Women’s Representation in State Politics: Linking Descriptive and Substantive Representation to Health and Economic Policy Outcomes

This paper tests whether women’s descriptive representation in American state legislatures explains variance in policies relevant to women. The relationship between women’s representation and policy is estimated, controlling for alternative explanations of policy adoption including learning from neighboring and politically-similar states, internal economic and political conditions, and state demographics. Following prior research, a single equation instrumental variables model is used to link descriptive and substantive representation, but results do not support the use of a model with endogenous covariates. A simpler model specification demonstrates that women’s descriptive representation in state legislatures improves economic policy but not health policy outcomes. Political party confounds the relationship between gender and health policy outcomes. This paper contributes to the literature by: Using a broader measure of policy outcomes rather than dichotomous measures, examining women’s representation in both executive and legislative branches, demonstrating the role of political party, and linking women’s descriptive and substantive representation

POLICY IMPLICATIONS OF RESTRICTED ACCESS STRATEGIES FOR MULTISPECIES FISHERIES

The commercial fishery that primarily targets king mackerel, stone crab, snappers, groupers and spiny lobster in Monroe and Collier counties is one of the most important commercial fisheries in Florida. These species currently face problems of overfishing and/or over capitalization. A dual-based restricted profit function is used to estimate the economic and technical interactions that exist in this multi-species fishery, primarily using own-price and cross-price elasticities of supply. It is found that the production technology does not exhibit input-output separability and nonjointness-in-inputs over all species groups. This result suggests that these key species may be more efficiently managed as a group, rather than with the use of existing single species regulations. Grand Challenges in School Social Work: Collaboration and Constraint in School Social Workers’ Sexuality Support for Children with Disabilities

Children with disabilities (CWD) face challenges to the development of their sexuality, in part due to a lack of appropriate, tailored sexual education in schools, role ambiguity regarding provision of sexual health services, and widespread discomfort with the topic. However, CWD have unique sexual health needs, an increased vulnerability to sexual and other forms of violence, and desire for skills and knowledge to build relationships. Using a phenomenological lens, authors conducted semistructured interviews with eight school social workers to understand how they are working with other professionals to support sexual and relational health of CWD (ages three to 11). Results indicate that school social workers collaborated with other professionals, although they also described multiple contexts in which other professionals had sole responsibility for sexual education and deferred to their expertise. Role ambiguity, policy restrictions, proscribed roles, and discomfort with the topic limited provision of needed services. Findings can assist school social workers seeking to build interdisciplinary collaboration, reduce role ambiguity, foster comfortable environments, and advocate for appropriate formats to support the sexual and relational health and well-being of CWD. They also suggest areas for policy change so that sexual support services are inclusive of all youths

Do Clothes Really Make the Man or Woman?

This research seeks to determine the importance of interview apparel and shoes to pre-professionals and professionals involved in the interviewing and hiring of individuals for retail management positions. Surveys containing pictures of five men and women in various types of dress ranging from casual to professional were posted in Survey Monkey. Results indicate that clothing and footwear do influence hiring decisions for management positions in retail. Human resource professionals and upper management expect pre-professionals to recognize and wear professional dress when interviewing. The undergraduate students surveyed did not always agree with what garments and shoes would be considered professional dress, and these results give educators information to include when preparing pre-professionals for interviews

A gene regulatory network armature for T lymphocyte specification

Choice of a T lymphoid fate by hematopoietic progenitor cells depends on sustained Notch–Delta signaling combined with tightly regulated activities of multiple transcription factors. To dissect the regulatory network connections that mediate this process, we have used high-resolution analysis of regulatory gene expression trajectories from the beginning to the end of specification, tests of the short-term Notch dependence of these gene expression changes, and analyses of the effects of overexpression of two essential transcription factors, namely PU.1 and GATA-3. Quantitative expression measurements of >50 transcription factor and marker genes have been used to derive the principal components of regulatory change through which T cell precursors progress from primitive multipotency to T lineage commitment. Our analyses reveal separate contributions of Notch signaling, GATA-3 activity, and down-regulation of PU.1. Using BioTapestry (www.BioTapestry.org), the results have been assembled into a draft gene regulatory network for the specification of T cell precursors and the choice of T as opposed to myeloid/dendritic or mast-cell fates. This network also accommodates effects of E proteins and mutual repression circuits of Gfi1 against Egr-2 and of TCF-1 against PU.1 as proposed elsewhere, but requires additional functions that remain unidentified. Distinctive features of this network structure include the intense dose dependence of GATA-3 effects, the gene-specific modulation of PU.1 activity based on Notch activity, the lack of direct opposition between PU.1 and GATA-3, and the need for a distinct, late-acting repressive function or functions to extinguish stem and progenitor-derived regulatory gene expression

Be well: A systems-based wellness intervention using mindfulness in the workplace – A case study

Introduction: Healthy work environments are essential in determining improved well-being of Australians. Job stress has been identified as a significant factor in psychological distress. This study evaluated the effect of introducing a systems-based workplace wellness programme using mindfulness in the workplace. Methods: The programme ‘Be Well’ was introduced as part of a systems-based approach to workplace health promotion, and evaluated using sick leave as a proxy for workplace stress, and the stress satisfaction offset score to determine the degree of change in stress and satisfaction. Results: There was significant reduction in sick leave (2014 vs. 2012) (p\u3c.001), and significant improvement in stress satisfaction offset score (p\u3c.05). Logistic regression analysis identified the programme components most predictive of reduced stress and higher job satisfaction. Conclusion: The impacts of a systems-based mindfulness workplace wellness intervention, show significant improvements in workers’ sick leave and changes to stress and satisfaction scores. This study has implications for sector-wide policy change in the workplace
