    Anti-anxiety Activity Studies on Homoeopathic Formulations of Turnera aphrodisiaca Ward

    Turnera aphrodisiaca Ward (Turneraceae) has been traditionally used for the treatment of anxiety neurosis, and as an aphrodisiac. Mother tinctures (85% ethanol extracts) of T. aphrodisiaca have also been used for the treatment of central nervous system disorders. In the present investigation, T. aphrodisiaca mother tinctures formulated by three reputed manufacturers of homoeopathic medicines (NLK, DWSG and SBL) were evaluated for their anxiolytic activity. Dried mother tinctures of T. aphrodisiaca were subjected to anxiolytic activity evaluation at various doses, i.e. 50, 75, 100, 125 or 150 mg/kg p.o. in mice using elevated plus maze apparatus. Dried mother tinctures exhibited significant anxiolytic activity at 50 mg/kg (NLK), 75 mg/kg (DWSG) and 125 mg/kg (SBL), respectively, with reference to control as well as standard (diazepam, 2 mg/kg p.o.). Mother tinctures of T. aphrodisiaca available in the market, have significant anxiolytic activity. Amongst the three mother tinctures of T. aphrodisiaca analyzed, the dry residue of NLK possesses the highest amount of anxiolytic constituent(s). To ensure uniformity and consistency of biological effects in herbal formulations, these should be standardized on the basis of bioactive markers. The authors are actively involved in isolating the bioactive constituent(s) from T. aphrodisiaca so that the plant can be standardized on the basis of biologically active constituent(s)

Both the modes of the frequency are calculated by the latest computational technique, MATLAB, for the various values of taper parameters and temperature gradient.     Plates are being increasingly used in the aeronautical and aerospace industry as well as in other fields of modern technology. Plates with variable thickness are of great importance in a wide variety of engineering applications i.e. nuclear reactor, aeronautical field, naval structure, submarine, earth-quake resistors etc. A mathematical model is presented for the use of engineers and research workers in space technology; have to operate under elevated temperatures. It is considered that the temperatures vary linearly in one direction and thickness of square plate varies linearly in two directions. An approximate but quite convenient frequency equation is derived for a square plate by using Rayleigh-Ritz technique. Both the modes of the frequency are calculated by the latest computational technique, MATLAB, for the various values of taper parameters and temperature gradient.     H. SABDARIFFA CALYCES ASH: ANTIANXIETY AND ANTIDEPRESSANT ACTIVITY EVALUATION AND PREPARATION OF ITS TABLETS

    Objective: Ash and its preparations have been used in Ayurveda for the treatment of various ailments since 7th century AD. Numerous studies suggest that the elements present in ash have significant role in affective disorders. Thus, the present study aimed at evaluating the antianxiety and antidepressant activity of total ash of H. sabdariffa calyces, and also of the tablets of total ash. Methods: Powdered calyces were taken in tared silica crucible, and were incinerated at a temperature not exceeding 450 °C. The resultant ash was cooled and weighed. This was evaluated for antianxiety and antidepressant activity using an elevated plus maze and Porsolt’s swim test, respectively. Further, the ash samples were analysed through ICP-MS to know their composition. The ash was formulated into tablets using the wet granulation technique, using only organic excipients. Results: Results indicated that the total ash of H. sabdariffa calyces exhibited significant (p<0.001) antianxiety and antidepressant activity at 50 and 100 mg/kg, po, respectively. The activities were comparable to the standard drugs. ICP-MS analysis showed the presence of magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and calcium as major elements. Tablets of H. sabdariffa total ash were as effective (p<0.001) as the total ash. Conclusion: Magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and calcium have been reported to play a significant role in affective disorders, explaining, thereby, as to why ash of H. sabdariffa calyces exhibited anti-anxiety and antidepressant activity

    Clinical study comparing outcome of post in vitro fertilisation triplet pregnancy reduced to twins versus non reduced in vitro fertilisation triplet pregnancies

    Background: There has been an upsurge in the number of multiple pregnancies with its attributability to increasing use of artificial reproductive techniques. To study clinical outcome of post IVF triplet pregnancy reduced to twin pregnancies   compared to those without triplet reduction.Methods: Hospital designed comparative study. 31 subjects were studied for comparative study design with triplets obtained after infertility treatment (assisted post-IVF). Out of 31, 15 subjects were expectantly managed who refused reduction while 16 subjects chose reduction to twins. Outcomes like prematurity, complications in neonate, birth weight discordance, neonatal mortality and maternal complications were studied.Results: The fetal (triplet) reduction group was associated with significant (p<0.002) higher neonatal birth weight as compared to non-reduced group. The fetal reduction group had significantly lower incidence of prematurity and neonatal complications like hyperbilirubinemia, respiratory distress syndrome and neonatal sepsis. The maternal complications were also higher in nonreduced in terms of PPROM, gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes mellitus, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy and gestational hypertension.Conclusions: It is indicated that the reduction of triplet to twins is effective considering more complications with non-reduced group and hence reduction improves favorable pregnancy outcomes

    Tibialis anterior muscle hernia : a case of chronic, dull pain and swelling in leg diagnosed by dynamic ultrasonography

    BACKGROUND: Symptomatic muscle hernias are not uncommon in the lower extremities and are a rare cause of chronic leg pain. They are most commonly seen in the tibialis anterior muscle, occurring through fascial defects, usually after trauma. There are about 200 cases of muscle hernias described in the literature. The diagnosis is challenging as most of the patients present with non-specific chronic leg pain. Dynamic muscle ultrasonography at rest and at stress is often used for the diagnosis. CASE REPORT: We describe a case of tibialis anterior muscle hernia presenting with persistent dull pain and swelling along the anterior aspect of the leg on straining the leg muscles. Dynamic ultrasonography was performed, which showed a defect in the fascial sheath of the muscle through which the tibialis anterior muscle herniated and produced a focal bulge along the anterior aspect of the leg. Based upon physical examination and dynamic ultrasonographic findings, a diagnosis of tibialis anterior muscle hernia was made. CONCLUSIONS: Tibialis anterior muscle hernia is a rare diagnosis and should be included in the differential diagnosis in a patient with chronic leg pain and swelling. Dynamic ultrasound is crucial in confirming the diagnosis and should be done on straining the muscles of the affected limb
