    Quantum interference is shown to deliver a means of regulating the diffraction pattern of a thermal atomic beam interacting with two standing wave electric fields.     Compression of multispectral Landsat imagery using the Embedded Zerotree Wavelet (EZW) algorithm

    The Embedded Zerotree Wavelet (EZW) algorithm has proven to be an extremely efficient and flexible compression algorithm for low bit rate image coding. The embedding algorithm attempts to order the bits in the bit stream in numerical importance and thus a given code contains all lower rate encodings of the same algorithm. Therefore, precise bit rate control is achievable and a target rate or distortion metric can be met exactly. Furthermore, the technique is fully image adaptive. An algorithm for multispectral image compression which combines the spectral redundancy removal properties of the image-dependent Karhunen-Loeve Transform (KLT) with the efficiency, controllability, and adaptivity of the embedded zerotree wavelet algorithm is presented. Results are shown which illustrate the advantage of jointly encoding spectral components using the KLT and EZW

    The nonperturbative renormalization group flow of Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG) is reviewed.     Probing Pseudogap by Josephson Tunneling

    We propose here an experiment aimed to determine whether there are superconducting pairing fluctuations in the pseudogap regime of the high-TcT_c materials. In the experimental setup, two samples above TcT_c are brought into contact at a single point and the differential AC conductivity in the presence of a constant applied bias voltage between the samples, VV, should be measured. We argue the the pairing fluctuations will produce randomly fluctuating Josephson current with zero mean, however the current-current correlator will have a characteristic frequency given by Josephson frequency ωJ=2eV/ℏ\omega_J = 2 e V /\hbar. We predict that the differential AC conductivity should have a peak at the Josephson frequency with the width determined by the phase fluctuations time.Comment: 4 pages, 2 eps figure

    In a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 1003 (1998)] Hussein and Pato employed the maximum entropy principle (MEP) in order to derive interpolating ensembles between any pair of universality classes in random matrix theory. They apply their formalism also to the transition from random matrix to Poisson statistics of spectra that is observed for the case of the Anderson-type metal-insulator transition.     Perturbation Theory for the Rosenzweig-Porter Matrix Model

    We study an ensemble of random matrices (the Rosenzweig-Porter model) which, in contrast to the standard Gaussian ensemble, is not invariant under changes of basis. We show that a rather complete understanding of its level correlations can be obtained within the standard framework of diagrammatic perturbation theory. The structure of the perturbation expansion allows for an interpretation of the level structure on simple physical grounds, an aspect that is missing in the exact analysis (T. Guhr, Phys. Rev.
