Two-mode heterodyne phase detection
We present an experimental scheme that achieves ideal phase detection on a
two-mode field. The two modes and are the signal and image band modes
of an heterodyne detector, with the field approaching an eigenstate of the
photocurrent . The field is obtained by means of a
high-gain phase-insensitive amplifier followed by a high-transmissivity
beam-splitter with a strong local oscillator at the frequency of one of the two

Vacuum effective action and inflation
We consider vacuum quantum effects in the Early Universe, which may lead to
inflation. The inflation is a direct consequence of the supposition that, at
high energies, all the particles can be described by the weakly interacting,
massless, conformally invariant fields. We discuss, from the effective field
theory point of view, the stability of inflation, transition to the FRW

Time-Optimal Transfer of Coherence
We provide exact analytical solutions for the problem of time-optimal
transfer of coherence from one spin polarization to a three-fold coherence in a
trilinear Ising chain with a fixed energy available and subject to local
controls with a non negligible time cost. The time of transfer is optimal and
consistent with a previous numerical result obtained assuming instantaneous

Asymmetric Drift and the Stellar Velocity Ellipsoid
We present the decomposition of the stellar velocity ellipsoid using stellar
velocity dispersions within a 40 deg wedge about the major-axis (sigma_maj),
the epicycle approximation, and the asymmetric drift equation. Thus, we employ
no fitted forms for sigma_maj and escape interpolation errors resulting from
comparisons of the major and minor axes. We apply the theoretical construction
of the method to integral field data taken for NGC 3949 and NGC 3982. We derive
the vertical-to-radial velocity dispersion ratio (sigma_z / sigma_R) and find
(1) our decomposition method is accurate and reasonable, (2) NGC 3982 appears
to be rather typical of an Sb type galaxy with sigma_z / sigma_R = 0.73
(+0.13/-0.11) despite its high surface brightness and small size, and (3) NGC
3949 has a hot disk with sigma_z / sigma_R = 1.18 (+0.36/-0.28).Comment: 4 pages including 3 figures, to appear in "Island Universes:

Dependence of inner-shell vacancy production upon distance in hard Li-Al collisions
We match the predictions of molecular-dynamics simulations of 1.2 keV and 2.0 keV 7Li+ scattered from Al(100) to observed total Li atom spectra measured by time-of-flight spectroscopy. In doing so we determine the relevant parameters in a simple distance of closest approach model for the probability of production of single and double vacancies in the Li 1s shell during hard Li-Al collisions. In the standard Fano-Lichten model of vacancy production, vacancies are produced with unit probability if the collision is hard enough to force the collision partners past some critical distance of closest approach. We find that such an assumption is insufficient to fit our simulations to experimental observations, and that we must allow for a gradual turning on of the vacancy production probability as the distance of closest approach decreases. The resulting model may be useful in modeling atomic excitation effects in simulations of other ion-impact processes
The anomaly-induced effective action and natural inflation
The anomaly-induced inflation (modified Starobinsky model) is based on the
application of the effective quantum field theory approach to the Early
Universe. We present a brief general review of the model and show that it does
not require a fine-tuning for the parameters of the theory or initial data,
gives a real chance to meet a graceful exit to the FRW phase and also has
