    Changes of temperature and bio-optical properties in the South China Sea in response to Typhoon Lingling, 2001

    A large patch of enhanced chlorophyll a concentration (Chla), lower sea surface temperature (SST), and lower sea surface height (SSH) was revealed in the central South China Sea (SCS) in November 2001 after the passage of typhoon Lingling. Maximum SST reduction of 11 degrees C occurred one day after Lingling's passage on 11/11. Subsequently, against a background level of 0.08 mg/m(3), average Chla within the area of 12.60-16.49 degrees N, 112.17-117.05 degrees E increased to 0.14 mg/m(3) on 11/12 and then to 0.37 mg/m(3) on 11/14. Dissolved organic matter and detritus were differentiated from Chla using a recent bio-optical algorithm. They contributed 64% to the increase of total absorption immediately after Lingling, while most of the changes later (74%) were due to phytoplankton. The area under Lingling's impact covered ca. 3 degrees latitude and 4 degrees longitude, which is much greater than the two summer cases previously observed in the northern SCS. This event lasted for ca. 15 days, and resulted in carbon fixation in the order of 0.4 Mt. Such a drastic response was attributed to the coupling of typhoon-induced nutrient pumping with the pre-established cyclonic gyre in the central SCS driven by the prevailing northeast monsoon

    A Hydraulic Reciprocating Rod Seal’s Life Evaluation Method Incorporating Failure Mechanism Analysis and Test Observation Data

    Reciprocating rod seals are widely used in hydraulic systems. Their useful life and reliability affect that of the system. Degradation modeling is necessary to evaluate the useful life of the seal. Seal wear is one of the important forms of hydraulic reciprocating rod seal degradation, yet it is difficult to measure through direct methods. Because seal wear determines the leakage of the seal, we therefore consider the seal leakage as the performance degradation index. Furthermore, the degradation of the seal is always associated with random effects, which cannot be considered by theoretical failure mechanism analysis. Hence, stochastic processes are applied to consider the random effects. Considering the error between the measured value and its real degradation state caused by the measurement environment or other factors, we introduce the measurement error term into the Wiener process model and develop the corresponding Wiener process life prediction model. Finally, the failure mechanism analysis and test measurement data are fused to predict the life cycle of the hydraulic reciprocating rod seals. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by comparing the predicted degradation and the experimental observations

    Long-Term Prediction of Sea Surface Temperature by Temporal Embedding Transformer With Attention Distilling and Partial Stacked Connection

    Sea surface temperature (SST) is one of the most important parameters in the global ocean–atmosphere system, and its long-term changes will have a significant impact on global climate and ecosystems. Accurate prediction of SST, therefore, especially the improvement of long-term predictive skills is of great significance for fishery farming, marine ecological protection, and planning of maritime activities. Since the effective and precise description of the long-range dependence between input and output requires higher model prediction ability, it is an extremely challenging task to achieve accurate long-term prediction of SST. Inspired by the successful application of the transformer and its variants in natural language processing similar to time-series prediction, we introduce it to the SST prediction in the China Sea. The model Transformer with temporal embedding, attention Distilling, and Stacked connection in Part (TransDtSt-Part) is developed by embedding the temporal information in the classic transformer, combining attention distillation and partial stacked connection, and performing generative decoding. High-resolution satellite-derived data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is utilized, and long-term SST predictions with day granularity are achieved under univariate and multivariate patterns. With root mean square error and mean absolute error as metrics, the TransDtSt-Part outperforms all competitive baselines in five oceans (i.e., subareas of Bohai, Yellow Sea, East China Sea, Taiwan Strait, and South China Sea) and six prediction horizons (i.e., 30, 60, 90, 180, 270, and 360 days). Experimental results demonstrate that the performance of the innovative model is encouraging and promising for the long-term prediction of SST

    Evaluation of the Effect of WRF Physical Parameterizations on Typhoon and Wave Simulation in the Taiwan Strait

    Typhoons and typhoon waves can cause disasters in coastal areas around the world. The Taiwan Strait often experiences typhoons, especially in summer. Numerical models have been adopted to predict typhoons and reduce losses. The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model is widely used in typhoon simulations, and the Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) model performs well in wave simulations. However, significant uncertainty remains in terms of choosing suitable WRF physical parameterizations in different situations. To evaluate the effect of WRF physical parameterizations on wind and wave simulations, 27 simulation experiments were designed. Three typhoon events (Goni, Dujuan, and Meranti) with different tracks that influenced the Taiwan Strait were simulated. Three parameters (wind speed, wind direction and significant wave height) were assessed using Taylor diagrams, and it was found that the best simulation experiment changed according to typhoon tracks and physical parameters. In wind speed simulation, the best simulation experiment is 12 for typhoon Dujuan and 19 for typhoon Goni and Meranti. From the perspective of wind direction simulation, experiments 26, 23, and 2 performed best for typhoons Goni, Dujuan, and Meranti. And experiments 19, 1, and 20 had the best performances in significant wave height simulation for typhoons Goni, Dujuan, and Meranti. The WRF-SWAN model using the best simulation experiment reduced the error and exhibited good performance in the wind and wave simulations. Skill scores of three parameters were all over 70 for typhoon Goni and 80 for typhoon Dujuan and Meranti. The applicability of the best simulation experiments was demonstrated in typhoon simulations with similar tracks. The accuracy of the wave simulation depended on wind speed, wind direction, and their interaction. In addition, a scheme’s sensitivity changed with different typhoon tracks. This study provides references for designing physical parameterizations for use with the WRF-SWAN model, which may help to simulate typhoons and typhoon waves in the Taiwan Strait more accurately in the future

    The Effects of Wenxin Keli on P-Wave Dispersion and Maintenance of Sinus Rhythm in Patients with Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

    Objective. To evaluate the beneficial and adverse effects of Wenxin Keli (WXKL), alone or combined with Western medicine, on P-wave dispersion (Pd) and maintenance of sinus rhythm for the treatment of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). Methods. Seven major electronic databases were searched to retrieve randomized controlled trials (RCTs) designed to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of WXKL, alone or combined with Western medicine, for PAF, with Pd or maintenance rate of sinus rhythm as the main outcome measure. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using criteria from the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Review of Interventions, version 5.1.0, and analysed using RevMan 5.1.0 software. Results. Fourteen RCTs of WXKL were included. The methodological quality of the trials was generally evaluated as low. The results of meta-analysis showed that WXKL, alone or combined with Western medicine, was more effective in Pd and the maintenance of sinus rhythm, compared with no medicine or Western medicine alone, in patients with PAF or PAF complicated by other diseases. Seven of the trials reported adverse events, indicating that the safety of WXKL is still uncertain. Conclusions. WXKL, alone or combined with Western medicine, appears to be more effective in improving Pd as well as maintenance of sinus rhythm in patients with PAF and its complications
