ă€äžæ–‡æ‘˜èŠă€‘ The horizontal and vertical distribution patterns of five planktonic copepods,Calanus sinicus, Acartia pacifica, Tortanus derjugini, Acartiella sinensis and Pseudodiaptomus poplesia, predominant in the Jiulong Estuary, were investigated from May 2003 to April 2004. The results showed that the distribution of these copepods was related to the tidal period but that each species had its own specific pattern. C. sinicus showed no tidal vertical migration behavior and was thought to be a non-residen

Oceanic and ecological response to native Typhoons Cempaka and Lupit (2021) along the northern South China Sea continental shelf: comparison and evaluation of global and regional Operational Oceanography Forecasting Systems

    Get PDF
The Global Operational Oceanography Forecasting System from the Mercator Ocean (MO) and the regional South China Sea Operational Oceanography Forecasting System (SCSOFSv2) were compared and evaluated using in situ and satellite observations, with a focus on the oceanic and ecological response to two consecutive native typhoons, Cempaka and Lupit, that occurred in July–August 2021. Results revealed a better simulation of the chlorophyll a (Chla) structure by SCSOFSv2 and a better simulation of the temperature profile by MO in the Pearl River Estuary. In addition, SCSOFSv2 sea surface temperature (SST) and MO Chla variations corresponded well with observations along the northern SCS shelf. Simulated maximum SST cooling was larger and 2–3 days earlier than those observations. Maximum Chla was stronger and led the climatological average by 2 days after the typhoon passage. Typhoon-induced vertical variations of Chla and NO3 indicated that different Chla bloom processes from coastal waters to the continental shelf. Discharge brought extra nutrients to stimulate Chla bloom in coastal waters, and model results revealed that its impact could extend to the continental shelf 50–150 km from the coastline. However, bottom nutrients were uplifted to contribute to Chla enhancement in the upper and middle layers of the shelf. Nutrients transported from the open sea along the continental slope with the bottom cold water could trigger Chla enhancement in the Taiwan Bank. This study suggests considering strong tides and waves as well as regional dynamics to improve model skills in the future

ă€è‹±æ–‡æ‘˜èŠă€‘Due to the regulations and bans regarding the use of traditional toxic chemicals against marine fouling organisms and the practical impediments to the commercialization of natural product antifoulants, there is an urgent need for compounds that are antifouling-active, environmentally friendly, and have a potential for commercial application. In this study, a series of common, commercially available pyrethroid products, which are generally used as environmentally safe insecticides, was evaluated for antifouling activity in the laboratory using an anti-settlement test with cyprids of the barnacle Balanus albicostatus and also in a field experiment. Laboratory assay showed that all eleven pyrethroids (namely, rich d-trans-allethrin, Es-biothrin, rich d-prallethrin, S-prallethrin, tetramethrin, rich d-tetramethrin, phenothrin, cyphenothrin, permethrin, cypermethrin, and high active cypermethrin) were able to inhibit barnacle settlement (EC50 range of 0.0316 to 87.00 ÎŒg/ml) without significant toxicity. Analysis of structure–activity relationships suggested that the cyano group at the α-carbon position had a significant influence on the expression of antifouling activity in pyrethroids. In the field, the antifouling activity of pyrethroids was further confirmed, with the most potent pyrethroids being cypermethrin and high active cypermethrin, which displayed efficiency comparable with that of tributyltin. In summary, our investigation indicated that these pyrethroids have a great and practical commercial potential as antifouling agents

Potential of Core-Collapse Supernova Neutrino Detection at JUNO

JUNO is an underground neutrino observatory under construction in Jiangmen, China. It uses 20kton liquid scintillator as target, which enables it to detect supernova burst neutrinos of a large statistics for the next galactic core-collapse supernova (CCSN) and also pre-supernova neutrinos from the nearby CCSN progenitors. All flavors of supernova burst neutrinos can be detected by JUNO via several interaction channels, including inverse beta decay, elastic scattering on electron and proton, interactions on C12 nuclei, etc. This retains the possibility for JUNO to reconstruct the energy spectra of supernova burst neutrinos of all flavors. The real time monitoring systems based on FPGA and DAQ are under development in JUNO, which allow prompt alert and trigger-less data acquisition of CCSN events. The alert performances of both monitoring systems have been thoroughly studied using simulations. Moreover, once a CCSN is tagged, the system can give fast characterizations, such as directionality and light curve

Detection of the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background with JUNO

As an underground multi-purpose neutrino detector with 20 kton liquid scintillator, Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is competitive with and complementary to the water-Cherenkov detectors on the search for the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB). Typical supernova models predict 2-4 events per year within the optimal observation window in the JUNO detector. The dominant background is from the neutral-current (NC) interaction of atmospheric neutrinos with 12C nuclei, which surpasses the DSNB by more than one order of magnitude. We evaluated the systematic uncertainty of NC background from the spread of a variety of data-driven models and further developed a method to determine NC background within 15\% with {\it{in}} {\it{situ}} measurements after ten years of running. Besides, the NC-like backgrounds can be effectively suppressed by the intrinsic pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) capabilities of liquid scintillators. In this talk, I will present in detail the improvements on NC background uncertainty evaluation, PSD discriminator development, and finally, the potential of DSNB sensitivity in JUNO

Real-time Monitoring for the Next Core-Collapse Supernova in JUNO

Core-collapse supernova (CCSN) is one of the most energetic astrophysical events in the Universe. The early and prompt detection of neutrinos before (pre-SN) and during the SN burst is a unique opportunity to realize the multi-messenger observation of the CCSN events. In this work, we describe the monitoring concept and present the sensitivity of the system to the pre-SN and SN neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), which is a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector under construction in South China. The real-time monitoring system is designed with both the prompt monitors on the electronic board and online monitors at the data acquisition stage, in order to ensure both the alert speed and alert coverage of progenitor stars. By assuming a false alert rate of 1 per year, this monitoring system can be sensitive to the pre-SN neutrinos up to the distance of about 1.6 (0.9) kpc and SN neutrinos up to about 370 (360) kpc for a progenitor mass of 30M⊙M_{\odot} for the case of normal (inverted) mass ordering. The pointing ability of the CCSN is evaluated by using the accumulated event anisotropy of the inverse beta decay interactions from pre-SN or SN neutrinos, which, along with the early alert, can play important roles for the followup multi-messenger observations of the next Galactic or nearby extragalactic CCSN.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figure

Mesh smoothing algorithm based on exterior angles split.

    No full text
Since meshes of poor quality give rise to low accuracy in finite element analysis and kinds of inconveniences in many other applications, mesh smoothing is widely used as an essential technique for the improvement of mesh quality. With respect to this issue, the main contribution of this paper is that a novel mesh smoothing method based on an exterior-angle-split process is proposed. The proposed method contains three main stages: the first stage is independent element geometric transformation performed by exterior-angle-split operations, treating elements unconnected; the second stage is to offset scaling and displacement induced by element transformation; the third stage is to determine the final positions of nodes with a weighted strategy. Theoretical proof describes the regularity of this method and many numerical experiments illustrate its convergence. Not only is this method applicable for triangular mesh, but also can be naturally extended to arbitrary polygonal surface mesh. Quality improvements of demonstrations on triangular and quadrilateral meshes show the effectiveness of this method

A Fast and Blind Chromatic Dispersion Estimation Based on Stepwise Optimal Order Search Method in Fractional Domain

    No full text
A fast and low-complexity blind chromatic dispersion (CD) estimation method is proposed by a stepwise optimal order search of fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) in coherent optical communications. The method can track the cumulative dispersion over time in future dynamic and flexible scenarios. The validity of the FrFT method is verified by analogy to the field of CD estimation from the energy concentration property of the chirp signal, and the estimation equation of the CD value is obtained by parameter transformation. Numerical simulations have been carried out in the CD range of 1600 ps/nm to 32,000 ps/nm for 28 GBaud PM-QPSK and 14 GBaud PM-16QAM signals. The results show that the proposed algorithm achieves a high CD estimation accuracy with an average estimation error of less than 50 ps/nm within the 4096 sampling points and an order search interval of 0.0001. The effects of the polarization mode dispersion, optical signal-to-noise ratio and nonlinearity on CD estimation performance are discussed. In addition, the stepwise optimal order search method can achieve the purpose of greatly reducing the computational complexity under the premise of ensuring the accuracy of CD estimation

Monitoring of OSNR Using an Improved Binary Particle Swarm Optimization and Deep Neural Network in Coherent Optical Systems

    No full text
A novel technique is proposed to implement optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) estimation by using an improved binary particle swarm optimization (IBPSO) and deep neural network (DNN) based on amplitude histograms (AHs) of signals obtained after constant modulus algorithm (CMA) equalization in an optical coherent system. For existing OSNR estimation models of DNN and AHs, sparse AHs with valid features of original data are selected by IBPSO algorithm to replace the original, and the sparse sets are used as input vector to train and test the particle swarm optimization (PSO) optimized DNN (PSO-DNN) network structure. Numerical simulations have been carried out in the OSNR ranges from 10 dB to 30 dB for 112 Gbps PM-RZ-QPSK and 112 Gbps PM-NRZ-16QAM signals, and results show that the proposed algorithm achieves a high OSNR estimation accuracy with the maximum estimation error is less than 0.5 dB. In addition, the simulation results with different data input into the deep neural network structure show that the mean OSNR estimation error is 0.29 dB and 0.39 dB under original data and 0.29 dB and 0.37 dB under sparse data for the two signals, respectively. In the future dynamic optical network, it is of more practical significance to reconstruct the original signal and analyze the data using sparse observation information in the face of multiple impairment and serious interference. The proposed technique has the potential to be applied for optical performance monitoring (OPM) and is helpful for better management of optical networks
