Status--the importance/prestige which is possessed by or accorded to individuals by virtue of their position in relation to others--plays an important role in group dynamics (Shaw, 1981). In the sport sciences, however, research on this concept is minimal. Thus, three studies were carried out to examine the nature of status among athletes in sport teams.;Studies 1 and 2 examined the relationship of the perceptions of status attributes and status rank to cohesion. Canadian (112 intercollegiate and 64 secondary school) and Indian (47 intercollegiate and 62 secondary school) athletes were tested.;The methodology adopted in Studies 1 and 2 were similar. In both studies, the perception of status attributes was measured using a structured format that incorporated 17 status attributes identified from research in social and work groups. The status rank of each athlete was assessed using difference scores derived from three evaluations: self by self, self by others, and others by self. The perception of group cohesion was measured using the Group Environment Questionnaire (Carron, Widmeyer, & Brawley, 1985).;The results showed that status attributes were operative in sport teams in both Canada and India. However, no association between perceptions of either status attributes or status rank and group cohesion was found among either Canadian or Indian athletes.;In Study 3, the nature of status attributes operative in sport teams was further examined using an open-ended approach. Two groups of athletes--Canadian (N = 69) and Indian (N = 105)--were tested.;An inductive content analysis of the responses of athletes revealed four main categories of status attributes--physical, psychological, demographic, and relationship with external others. When the frequency of occurance of these attributes was examined, it was found that psychological attributes were considered to be most important for sport team athletes.;The results of Studies 1, 2, and 3 have provided some insight into the nature of the status attributes operative in sport teams in Canada and India. Also, a number of issues were raised for future research

An outbreak of a highly pathogenic coronavirus, which can cause chronic respiratory illness and high mortality rates. It takes a considerable amount of time to perform the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) used in COVID tests. Its accuracy ranges from 30% to 70%. In contrast, CT and chest X-ray diagnostics are 98% and 80% accurate in detecting COVID, respectively. A deep learning algorithms was applied to CT and X-ray images to enable rapid and accurately diagnosis of COVID-19 within seconds. In this survey, we revised all state-of-the-art studies of COVID-19 based on CT and X-ray images. Also, we analysed multiple deep learning networks and compared the performance of each technique. The result of the comparison shows that the baseline neural network has better efficiency in the recognition of COVID-19. The detection accuracy of baseline networks ranges between 93% and 98.7%. This shows the efficiency of deep learning techniques in identifying COVID-19

There were no significant adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes. Conclusions: Implementation of standard labour protocols can reduce primary caesarean section rate without compromising maternal or foetal safety

Impacts of climate change on water resources in Sri Lanka

    Get PDF
Anthropogenically induced climate change is expected to influence rainfall and temperature. Therefore this study focuses on the climate change impacts on soil moisture deficits which will have serious impacts on the water resources. Climate change datasets for Sri Lanka were derived using outputs from the UK Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research model (HadCM3) for selected IPCC SRES scenarios for the 2050s and compared with the baseline data from IWMI.Under the scenarios tested, there will be a slight increase in annual average rainfall because of an increase in rainfall during the south west monsoon. But the north east monsoon rains decrease. Similarly the annual average temperature increases. These changes in rainfall and temperature, together with other climatic factors, would increase the maximum annual soil moisture deficit significantly in the dry zone areas, demanding higher irrigation need. The major food production activities in these zones would then be at risk

    Get PDF
Osteoporosis is major public health concern affecting millions of older adults worldwide. A systematic review was carried out to identify the most common osteoporosis health beliefs in adult men and women from descriptive and intervention studies. The Osteoporosis Health Belief Scale (OHBS) and Osteoporosis Self-efficacy Scale (OSES) evaluate osteoporosis health beliefs, including perceived susceptibility and seriousness, benefits, barriers, and self-efficacy of calcium and exercise, and health motivation, and their relationship to preventive health behaviours. A comprehensive search of studies that included OHBS and OSES subscale scores as outcomes was performed. Fifty full-text articles for citations were reviewed based on inclusion criteria. Twenty-two articles met the inclusion criteria. Greater perceived seriousness, benefits, self-efficacy, health motivation, and fewer barriers were the most common health-belief subscales in men and women. Few studies were interventions (n = 6) and addressed osteoporosis health beliefs in men (n = 8). Taking health beliefs into consideration when planning and conducting education interventions may be useful in both research and practice for osteoporosis prevention and management; however, more research in this area is needed
