Iron Deficiency Anemia: An Unexpected Cause of an Acute Occipital Lobe Stroke in an Otherwise Healthy Young Woman
A 29-year-old caucasian woman who presented to the hospital with an acute onset of right eye visual disturbance and headache was found to have an acute left occipital lobe infarction. Past medical history was significant for iron deficiency anemia (IDA) secondary to menorrhagia. Her initial hemoglobin level was 7.8 G/DL, and her symptoms improved after iron and blood transfusions. Hypercoagulable studies were completed in the outpatient setting, and the results were unremarkable. Her acute stroke was most likely related to IDA as she had low cardiovascular risk factors along with a negative complete stroke workup
Diffusion in a multi-component Lattice Boltzmann Equation model
Diffusion phenomena in a multiple component lattice Boltzmann Equation (LBE)
model are discussed in detail. The mass fluxes associated with different
mechanical driving forces are obtained using a Chapman-Enskog analysis. This
model is found to have correct diffusion behavior and the multiple diffusion
coefficients are obtained analytically. The analytical results are further
confirmed by numerical simulations in a few solvable limiting cases. The LBE
model is established as a useful computational tool for the simulation of mass
transfer in fluid systems with external forces.Comment: To appear in Aug 1 issue of PR

Distances and classification of amino acids for different protein secondary structures
Window profiles of amino acids in protein sequences are taken as a
description of the amino acid environment. The relative entropy or
Kullback-Leibler distance derived from profiles is used as a measure of
dissimilarity for comparison of amino acids and secondary structure
conformations. Distance matrices of amino acid pairs at different conformations
are obtained, which display a non-negligible dependence of amino acid
similarity on conformations. Based on the conformation specific distances
clustering analysis for amino acids is conducted.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figure
Multi-component lattice-Boltzmann model with interparticle interaction
A previously proposed [X. Shan and H. Chen, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 47}, 1815,
(1993)] lattice Boltzmann model for simulating fluids with multiple components
and interparticle forces is described in detail. Macroscopic equations
governing the motion of each component are derived by using Chapman-Enskog
method. The mutual diffusivity in a binary mixture is calculated analytically
and confirmed by numerical simulation. The diffusivity is generally a function
of the concentrations of the two components but independent of the fluid
velocity so that the diffusion is Galilean invariant. The analytically
calculated shear kinematic viscosity of this model is also confirmed
numerically.Comment: 18 pages, compressed and uuencoded postscript fil
Crystal isomorphisms in Fock spaces and Schensted correspondence in affine type A
We are interested in the structure of the crystal graph of level Fock
spaces representations of . Since
the work of Shan [26], we know that this graph encodes the modular branching
rule for a corresponding cyclotomic rational Cherednik algebra. Besides, it
appears to be closely related to the Harish-Chandra branching graph for the
appropriate finite unitary group, according to [8]. In this paper, we make
explicit a particular isomorphism between connected components of the crystal
graphs of Fock spaces. This so-called "canonical" crystal isomorphism turns out
to be expressible only in terms of: - Schensted's classic bumping procedure, -
the cyclage isomorphism defined in [13], - a new crystal isomorphism, easy to
describe, acting on cylindric multipartitions. We explain how this can be seen
as an analogue of the bumping algorithm for affine type . Moreover, it
yields a combinatorial characterisation of the vertices of any connected
component of the crystal of the Fock space
Lattice-Boltzmann Method for Geophysical Plastic Flows
We explore possible applications of the Lattice-Boltzmann Method for the
simulation of geophysical flows. This fluid solver, while successful in other
fields, is still rarely used for geotechnical applications. We show how the
standard method can be modified to represent free-surface realization of
mudflows, debris flows, and in general any plastic flow, through the
implementation of a Bingham constitutive model. The chapter is completed by an
example of a full-scale simulation of a plastic fluid flowing down an inclined
channel and depositing on a flat surface. An application is given, where the
fluid interacts with a vertical obstacle in the channel.Comment: in W. Wu, R.I. Borja (Edts.) Recent advances in modelling landslides

Momentum modes of M5-branes in a 2d space
We study M5 branes by considering the selfdual strings parallel to a plane.
With the internal oscillation frozen, each selfdual string gives a 5d SYM
field. All selfdual strings together give a 6d field with 5 scalars, 3 gauge
degrees of freedom and 8 fermionic degrees of freedom in adjoint representation
of U(N). Selfdual strings with the same orientation have the SYM-type
interaction. For selfdual strings with the different orientations, which could
also be taken as the unparallel momentum modes of the 6d field on that plane or
the (p,q) (r,s) strings on D3 with (p,q)\neq (r,s), the [i,j]+[j,k]\rightarrow
[i,k] relation is not valid, so the coupling cannot be written in terms of the
standard N \times N matrix multiplication. 3-string junction, which is the
bound state of the unparallel [i,j] [j,k] selfdual strings, may play a role
here.Comment: 37 pages, 5 figures, to appear in JHEP; v2: reference adde

Key Points
Novel RARG-CPSF6 fusion in an AML case with promyelocytic features and no evidence of PML-RARA or X-RARA fusion. Gene fusions involving RARG can initiate AML with promyelocytic morphological features.</jats:p
Direct visualization reveals dynamics of a transient intermediate during protein assembly
Interactions between proteins underlie numerous biological functions. Theoretical work suggests that protein interactions initiate with formation of transient intermediates that subsequently relax to specific, stable complexes. However, the nature and roles of these transient intermediates have remained elusive. Here, we characterized the global structure, dynamics, and stability of a transient, on-pathway intermediate during complex assembly between the Signal Recognition Particle (SRP) and its receptor. We show that this intermediate has overlapping but distinct interaction interfaces from that of the final complex, and it is stabilized by long-range electrostatic interactions. A wide distribution of conformations is explored by the intermediate; this distribution becomes more restricted in the final complex and is further regulated by the cargo of SRP. These results suggest a funnel-shaped energy landscape for protein interactions, and they provide a framework for understanding the role of transient intermediates in protein assembly and biological regulation
