Property for noncommutative universal lattices
We establish a new spectral criterion for Kazhdan's property which is
applicable to a large class of discrete groups defined by generators and
relations. As the main application, we prove property for the groups
, where and is an arbitrary finitely generated
associative ring. We also strengthen some of the results on property for
Kac-Moody groups from a paper of Dymara and Januszkiewicz (Invent. Math 150
(2002)).Comment: 47 pages; final versio
Phase coherent transport in SrTiO3/LaAlO3 interfaces
The two dimensional electron gas formed between the two band insulators
SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 exhibits a variety of interesting physical properties which
make it an appealing material for use in future spintronics and/or quantum
computing devices. For this kind of applications electrons have to retain their
phase memory for sufficiently long times or length. Using a mesoscopic size
device we were able to extract the phase coherence length, and its temperature
variation. We find the dephasing rate to have a power law dependence on
temperature. The power depends on the temperature range studied and sheet
resistance as expected from dephasing due to strong electron-electron
interactions.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev
Kontinuierliche heterogene Photokatalyse in seriellen Mikro‐Batch‐Reaktoren
Abstract Solid reagents, leaching catalysts, and heterogeneous photocatalysts are commonly employed in batch processes but are ill-suited for continuous-flow chemistry. Heterogeneous catalysts for thermal reactions are typically used in packed-bed reactors, which cannot be penetrated by light and thus are not suitable for photocatalytic reactions involving solids. We demonstrate that serial micro-batch reactors (SMBRs) allow for the continuous utilization of solid materials together with liquids and gases in flow. This technology was utilized to develop selective and efficient fluorination reactions using a modified graphitic carbon nitride heterogeneous catalyst instead of costly homogeneous metal polypyridyl complexes. The merger of this inexpensive, recyclable catalyst and the SMBR approach enables sustainable and scalable photocatalysis
New scalar resonances from sneutrino-Higgs mixing in supersymmetry with small lepton number (R-parity) violation
We consider new s-channel scalar exchanges in top quark and massive
gauge-bosons pair production in e+e- collisions, in supersymmetry with a small
lepton number violation. We show that a soft bilinear lepton number violating
term in the scalar potential which mixes the Higgs and the slepton fields can
give rise to a significant scalar resonance enhancement in e+e- -> ZZ, W+W- and
in e+e- -> t t(bar). The sneutrino-Higgs mixed state couples to the incoming
light leptons through its sneutrino component and to either the top quark or
the massive gauge bosons through its Higgs component. Such a scalar resonance
in these specific production channels cannot result from trilinear Yukawa-like
R-parity violation alone, and may, therefore, stand as strong evidence for the
existence of R-parity violating bilinears in the supersymmetric scalar
potential. We use the LEP2 measurements of the WW and ZZ cross-sections to
place useful constrains on this scenario, and investigate the expectations for
the sensitivity of a future linear collider to these signals. We find that
signals of these scalar resonances, in particular in top-pair production, are
well within the reach of linear colliders in the small lepton number violation
scenario.Comment: 22 pages in revtex, 10 figures embadded in the text using epsfi
Effects, interactions, and localization of Rickettsia and Wolbachia in the house fly parasitoid, Spalangia endius
Many insect species harbor facultative microbial symbionts that affect their biology in diverse ways. Here, we studied the effects, interactions, and localization of two bacterial symbionts-Wolbachia and Rickettsia-in the parasitoid Spalangia endius. We crossed between four S. endius colonies-Wolbachia only (W), Rickettsia only (R), both (WR), and none (aposymbiotic, APS) (16 possible crosses) and found that Wolbachia induces incomplete cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI), both when the males are W or WR. Rickettsia did not cause reproductive manipulations and did not rescue the Wolbachia-induced CI. However, when R females were crossed with W or WR males, significantly less offspring were produced compared with that of control crosses. In non-CI crosses, the presence of Wolbachia in males caused a significant reduction in offspring numbers. Females' developmental time was significantly prolonged in the R colony, with adults starting to emerge one day later than the other colonies. Other fitness parameters did not differ significantly between the colonies. Using fluorescence in situ hybridization microscopy in females, we found that Wolbachia is localized alongside Rickettsia inside oocytes, follicle cells, and nurse cells in the ovaries. However, Rickettsia is distributed also in muscle cells all over the body, in ganglia, and even in the brain
CP Nonconservation in at the Tevatron
The reaction is found to be rather rich in exhibiting
several different types of CP asymmetries. The spin of the top quark plays an
important role. Asymmetries are related to form factors arising from radiative
corrections of the production vertex due to non-standard physics. As
illustrations, effects are studied in two Higgs Doublet Models and in
Supersymmetric Models; asymmetries up to a few percent may be possible.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures. Note: replaced due to minor problems that

Effective R-parity violation from supersymmetry breaking
We present a scenario in which Yukawa-like R-parity violating (RPV) couplings
are naturally suppressed. In our framework, RPV is assumed to originate from
the SUSY breaking mechanism and then transmitted into the SUSY Lagrangian only
through soft SUSY breaking operators in the scalar potential. The RPV
Yukawa-like operators of the superpotential, conventionally parametrized by the
couplings \lambda, \lambda' and \lambda'', are then generated through loops
containing the SUSY scalars, the gauginos and the soft RPV interactions and
are, therefore, manifest as effective operators with a typical strength of
order 10^{-3}.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Revtex4. Main changes with respect to Version 1
are: improved discussions on RGE effects, discussion added on neutrino
masses, a toy model added for the proposed scenario. Conclusions remain
unchanged. As will appear in Phys. Rev.
Frequency Tracking and Parameter Estimation for Robust Quantum State-Estimation
In this paper we consider the problem of tracking the state of a quantum
system via a continuous measurement. If the system Hamiltonian is known
precisely, this merely requires integrating the appropriate stochastic master
equation. However, even a small error in the assumed Hamiltonian can render
this approach useless. The natural answer to this problem is to include the
parameters of the Hamiltonian as part of the estimation problem, and the full
Bayesian solution to this task provides a state-estimate that is robust against
uncertainties. However, this approach requires considerable computational
overhead. Here we consider a single qubit in which the Hamiltonian contains a
single unknown parameter. We show that classical frequency estimation
techniques greatly reduce the computational overhead associated with Bayesian
estimation and provide accurate estimates for the qubit frequencyComment: 6 figures, 13 page
Flavor changing single top quark production channels at e^+e^- colliders in the effective Lagrangian description
We perform a global analysis of the sensitivity of LEP2 and e^+e^- colliders
with a c.m. energy in the range 500 - 2000 GeV to new flavor-changing single
top quark production in the effective Lagrangian approach. The processes
considered are sensitive to new flavor-changing effective vertices such as Ztc,
htc, four-Fermi tcee contact terms as well as a right-handed Wtb coupling. We
show that e^+ e^- colliders are most sensitive to the physics responsible for
the contact tcee vertices. For example, it is found that the recent data from
the 189 GeV LEP2 run can be used to rule out any new flavor physics that can
generate these four-Fermi operators up to energy scales of \Lambda > 0.7 - 1.4
TeV, depending on the type of the four-Fermi interaction. We also show that a
corresponding limit of \Lambda > 1.3 - 2.5 and \Lambda > 17 - 27 TeV can be
reached at the future 200 GeV LEP2 run and a 1000 GeV e^+e^- collider,
respectively. We note that these limits are much stronger than the typical
limits which can be placed on flavor diagonal four-Fermi couplings. Similar
results hold for \mu^+\mu^- colliders and for tu(bar) associated production.
Finally we briefly comment on the necessity of measuring all flavor-changing
effective vertices as they can be produced by different types of heavy physics.Comment: 34 pages, plain latex, 7 figures embadded in the text using epsfig.
