    Clinical profile of patients of poisoning admitted in emergency department in a teaching hospital, MAMC, Agroha, Haryana, India

    3 Million Serious poisoning (1 million accidentals and 2 million suicide attempts) occur each year worldwide. India ranks second in Asia in annual pesticide consumption. A study was conducted (1 year) wherein patients with history of poisoning were admitted from different catchment areas of hospital (30 Km radius). The total number of patients admitted during study period was 61. Patients had consumed these agents to attempt suicide. Out of 61 patients 26 were male and rest 37 were females. 18 patients died and rest survived. The precipitating factors in the suicide attempts were stranded relations with husband/wife, failure in examination and confrontation with parents. The availability of these poisonous substances in the household make people to consume these agents on slight provocation.All our patients, though majority were literate, were from families who had agricultural land and majority of their family members were farmers

    Epidemiological characteristics of acute dehydrating diarrhea during an epidemic of cholera: a study from North India

    Background: Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease which continues to be a public health problem since inception. It is a disease related to poverty, overcrowding, poor sanitation and inaccessibility to clean water. India forms a fertile ground for the sustenance and transmission of cholera. However the diagnosis of cholera doesn’t easily come to mind when dealing with cases of dehydrating diarrheas.Methods The study was a prospective cohort study conducted in a tertiary care center of North India. All patients presenting to the medicine department of this hospital with acute dehydrating diarrhea were enrolled for the study. Stool samples for hanging drop test and culture were sent in all patients to rule this cholera.Results: Eighty four patients presenting to the medicine department of this hospital with acute dehydrating diarrhea were included in this study. All the patients had loose watery stools but classical rice water stools were seen in only 20.2% of patients. Patients with rice water stools were more likely to be positive for stool culture (70.6%, n = 12/17) and hanging drop preparations (82.3%, n = 14/17) as compared to those with watery stools. The difference was found to be statistically significant for culture (70.6% vs 40.3%, p-value = 0.02) as well as hanging drop preparation (82.3% vs 47.8%, p-value = 0.01).Conclusions: The prevalence of culture positive cholera cases was found to be 46.4% out of all the cases presenting with acute dehydrating diarrhea which is quite high. Rice water stools which are considered characteristic for cholera were found in less than half of culture positive cases of cholera (43.6%, n = 17/39). Hanging drop preparation was found to have a sensitivity of 87.2% and a specificity of 86.5% in comparison to stool culture which is regarded as gold standard for diagnosis of cholera. Cholera may be considered as an ongoing epidemic with periodic surge in cases and should be suspected whenever cases of acute watery diarrhea present in increased numbers with features of severe dehydration, especially when the cases are clustered together and from a poor socio-economic background

    Clinical profile of dengue fever infection in patients admitted in NC Medical College, Haryana in the year 2019

    Background: Dengue infections can result in a wide spectrum of disease severity ranging from an influenza-like illness (dengue fever; DF) to the life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF)/dengue shock syndrome (DSS). The study was aimed to compare the clinical profile of all patients diagnosed with dengue viral infection at NCMC.Methods: This retrospective study included 24 patients infected with dengue virus, aged 19 years to 45 years. Laboratory and haematological data were included.Results Peak of infection occurred in November 2019 and no cases were recorded in October 2019. Common clinical symptoms were fever, joint pains, headache and rash. Common haematological abnormalities were thrombocytopenia. All patients survived. There was no case of dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome.Conclusions: Significant differences in the clinical profile is possibly because of infection with different serotypes of dengue virus (DENV), concurrent/sequential infection of more than one serotype, and differences in host immune responses associated with host genetic variations

    Study of absorption loss effects on acoustic wave propagation in shallow water using different empirical models

    Efficient underwater acoustic communication and target locating systems require detailed study of acoustic wave propagation in the sea. Many investigators have studied the absorption of acoustic waves in ocean water and formulated empirical equations such as Thorp's formula, Schulkin and Marsh model and Fisher and Simmons formula. The Fisher and Simmons formula found the effect associated with the relaxation of boric acid on absorption and provided a more detailed form of absorption coefficient which varies with frequency. However, no simulation model has made for the underwater acoustic propagation using these models. This paper reports the comparative study of acoustic wave absorption carried out by means of modeling in MATLAB. The results of simulation have been evaluated using measured data collected at Desaru beach on the eastern shore of Johor in Malaysia. The model has been used to determine sound absorption for given values of depth (D), salinity (S), temperature (T), pH, and acoustic wave transmitter frequency (f). From the results a suitable range, depth and frequency can be found to obtain best propagation link with low absorption loss

    Production and characterization of cellulases by Bacillus pumilus EB3

    Cellulase production from bacteria can be an advantage as the enzyme production rate is normally higher due to bacterial high growth rate. Screening of bacteria, optimisation of fermentation conditions and selection of substrates are important for the successful production of cellulase. This study is conducted to produce cellulase from our local isolate Bacillus pumilus EB3, using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as substrate. Following that, cellulase produced from Bacillus pumilus EB3 was purified using ion exchange chromatography with anion exchanger (HiTrap QXL) for characterisation of the cellulase. Cellulase was successfully produced in 2L stirred tank reactor (STR) with the productivity of 0.53, 3.08 and 1.78 U/L.h and the maximum enzyme activity of 0.011, 0.079 and 0.038 U/mL for FPase, CMCase and β-glucosidase respectively. Purification of cellulase from Bacillus pumilus EB3 using ion exchange chromatography showed that 98.7% of total CMCase was recovered. Protein separation was however based on subtractive separation where the contaminants were bound to the column instead of CMCase. Characterisation of the enzyme found that CMCase from Bacillus pumilus EB3 has a molecular weight range from 30-65 kDa and was optimally active at pH 6.0 and temperature 60℃.     Combining Ability of Pod Yield and Related Traits of Groundnut ( Arachis hypogaea

    A study was performed using 6×6 F1 diallel population without reciprocals to assess the mode of inheritance of pod yield and related traits in groundnut with imposed salinity stress. Heterosis was found for pod number and yield. Data on general and specific combining ability (gca and sca) indicated additive and nonadditive gene actions. The gca: sca ratios were much less than unity suggesting predominant role of nonadditive gene effects. Cultivars “Binachinabadam-2” and “Dacca-1” and mutant M6/25/64-82 had the highest, second highest, and third highest pod number, as well as gca values, respectively. These two cultivars and another mutant M6/15/70-19 also had the highest, second highest, and third highest pod yield, as well as gca values, respectively. Therefore, “Dacca-1”, “Binachinabadam-2”, M6/25/64-82, and M6/15/70-19 could be used as source of salinity tolerance. Cross combinations showing high sca effects arising from parents with high and low gca values for any trait indicate the influence of nonadditive genes on their expression. Parents of these crosses can be used for biparental mating or reciprocal recurrent selection for developing high yielding varieties. Crosses with high sca effects having both parents with good gca effects could be exploited by pedigree breeding to get transgressive segregants

    Thermal oxidation process improved corrosion in cobalt chromium molybdenum alloys

    The corrosion phenomena are always give bad impact to any metal products including human implants. This is due to the corrosion impacts are harmful for hard tissues and soft tissues. There are many methods to prevent the process of corrosion on implant materials such as coating with bioceramic materials and modify the implant surface with surface modification techniques. However, until now there is still no gold standard to overcome this problem and it is remain in researching process. Thus, the aim of this research is to investigate the potential and economical surface modification method to reduce the corrosion effects on Cobalt-Chromium-Molybdenum (Co-Cr-Mo) based alloy when insert in human body. The thermal oxidation process was selected to treat Co-Cr-Mo surface substrate. Firstly, Co-Cr-Mo alloy was heated in muffle furnace at constant temperature of 850 C with different duration of heating such as 3 hours and 6 hours in order to analyze the formation of oxide layer. The corrosion behaviours of untreated sample and oxidized sample were investigated utilizing potentiodynamic polarization tests in simulated body fluids (SBF). The Vickers hardness after corrosion testing was measured in order to evaluate the effect of thermal oxidation in reducing corrosion rate. Based on the results obtained it is clearly showed that substrates undergone thermal oxidation with 6 hours duration time performed better than 3 hours duration, with the hardness value 832.2HV vs. 588HV respectively. Dense oxide layer and uniform thickness formed on the oxidized substrates able to help in reducing the corrosion effects on Co-Cr-Mo alloy without degraded its excellent mechanical properties. The microstructures of oxidized substrates before and after corrosion test were also analyzed using FESEM images for better observations. It was determined that corrosion resistance of Co-Cr-Mo substrate can be increased with oxide layer formed on the alloys using thermal oxidation process. (C) 2017 The Authors. Published by IASE

    Identification of bovine growth hormone (BGH) gene polymorphism using PCR-RFLP method in buffalo bulls

    Growth Hormone (GH) is a single polypeptide chain synthesised and secreted from anterior pituitary gland by somatroph cells. The product of GH gene hastens metabolism and promotes the growth of many organs and tissues especially bone, muscle and visceral organs. It also regulates growth, mammary gland development and lactation. Polymorphism in this gene is associated with increase in growth and development of many tissues in the body. Aim: The objective of this study was to investigate the polymorphism of bovine growth hormone (bGH) gene in buffalo bulls (Bubalus bubalis) using the PCR-RFLP (polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism) technique. Design: Genomic DNA was extracted from a total of 10 bulls, consisting of Murrah – Swamp crossbred and pure Swamp buffalo bulls. A The 446 segment of the bGH gene was amplified. The DNA amplicons were detected in 2% agarose gel following 45 minutes of electrophoresis. They were thereafter digesting with AluI endonuclease restriction enzyme, and the digested DNA were detected in 2% agarose gel following electrophoresis for about 45minutes in all samples Results: Similar bands of approximately 300 and 146-bp each, with no variation, were detected in 2% agarose gel following electrophoresis in all the animals tested. Conclusion: Based on the Alu1 digestion result, all samples produced the same allele of the gene, with no polymorphism detected
