A Fourier AIXI Approximation (Universal AI)

    Get PDF
AIXI is a pareto optimal theory of artificial intelligence and uses Theory of Universal Induction along with control theory to achieve this task. The Universal Induction theory presents the concept of the Solomonoff's Universal prior for sequence prediction, though it is incomputable. The challenge of making a computationally efficient version of the prior (if not optimal) and thereby using it in AIXI is addressed in this paper. The proposed model is then simulated for environments manifesting as n-order Markov sources and a suitable extension to general systems has been suggested. The superiority of this time and length bounded prior, in terms of computational complexity, over methods using purely binary strings has been presented

Functionality of laser deposited carbide coating on die/tool steel

    Get PDF
A successful effort has been made to deposit vanadium carbide on AISIH13 steel using Nd: YAG laser. A search for an ideal coating and equally suitable coating method for various applications will always be an interesting and challenging area in surface engineering. In the present study a continuous, adherent, crack-porosity-fee coating has been obtained which can serve as a protective tool for various surfaces. The coating is composite in nature. To explore the properties of this coating in greater detail, it has been evaluated for chemical and structural, mechanical and tribological properties. Another Aspect of this work is to identify the suitability of this coating to protect die-casting die surfaces from the attack of molten aluminum. A number of different mechanisms such as corrosive attack and erosion by molten aluminum and oxidation of the die surface act to reduce the life of die casting dies. In view of this, the coating has been tested for preliminary analysis such as high temperature oxidation by conducting thermogravimetric analysis and for liquid metal corrosion resistance by immersion test in liquid aluminum. It shows excellent oxidation resistance below 600 °C and performs well in the immersion test in liquid aluminum by reducing the extent of attack of molten aluminum on the HI3 steel

Surgical excision of a solitary osteochondroma arising from the lesser trochanter in an adult: a case report

    Get PDF
The occurrence of osteochondroma around the proximal femur is rarely reported as most cases are asymptomatic. We report a rare case of symptomatic solitary osteochondroma arising from the lesser trochanter in a skeletally mature patient causing significant impairment of hip function managed by surgical excision. A 32-year-old male labourer presented with pain and swelling over right hip region for nine months. Radiographic examination (X-ray, MRI, CT) revealed the pathognomonic continuity of the cortex and medulla of the lesion with the parent bone. Cartilage cap cover (measuring 15 mm) on MRI helped to clinch the diagnosis. CT guided biopsy was also suggestive of osteochondroma. The tumour was excised en bloc by posterior approach without the need for hip dislocation. The base of the lesser trochanter was osteotomised and the entire mass with the cartilage cap was removed. A two year follow up has shown no evidence of local recurrence. Surgical excision of a symptomatic osteochondroma is a successful form of treatment with low mortality. Adequate pre-operative radiographic examination is helpful to know the location and local spread of the tumour. Measurement of cartilage cap thickness on MRI is an essential tool to diagnose malignant changes. A safe and adequate resection should be carried out in an effective manner with attention to femoral head vascularity and prevention of local recurrences. Patients with solitary osteochondroma around the proximal femur should be kept under observation to help early detection of malignant changes

Background: Intra Uterine Fetal Death (IUFD) is tragic event for the parents and obstetrician. Identification of causes of IUFD will be helpful in counseling of parents as well as for formulating preventive measures. Objectives of current study were to study the causes of Intra Uterine Fetal Death (IUFD), associated complications and to suggest preventive measures. Methods: Study design: retrospective observational study. This study was carried out over a period of 3 months (April2014- June 2014) at a tertiary care hospital. Inclusion criteria was all IUFD >20 weeks of gestation. Results: Out of 1850 total births during the study period 80 IUFD occurred. Hence proportion of IUFD was 4.3%. In our study, Still Birth Rate (SBR) as per WHO criteria (28 weeks) was 22.1 per 1000. Registered patients were 24 (30%) whereas 56 (70%) were emergency admissions. Majority of cases, 48 (60%) were multigravidae with past obstetric history of abortion and IUFD in 13 (16.2%) and 9 (11.2%) respectively. In 31 (38.7%) no identifiable cause of IUFD was found whereas cause was identified in 49 (61.3%). IUFD occurred in 27 (33.7%) cases of PIH and eclampsia, out of them abruptio placenta was present in 10 (12.5%). Other causes of IUFD were anemia, oligoamnios, fever, congenital anomaly, cord accidents and jaundice in 9 (11.2%), 5 (6.2%), 3 (3.7%), 2 (2.5%), 2 (2.5%) and 1 (1.2%) respectively. Vaginal delivery occurred in 73 (91.2%) and 7 (8.7%) required surgical intervention. Most common complication associated with IUFD was Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) in 18 (22.5%) followed by Sepsis in 8 (10%), Acute Renal Failure (ARF) in 3 (3.7%), Maternal mortality in 1 (1.2%).Conclusions: Anemia, PIH, accidental haemorrhage were leading causes of IUFD. Majority of women who had IUFD were emergency admission who had not received adequate antenatal care. A significant proportion of IUFD is preventable by health education to patients and community for regular antenatal care, about warning signs during antenatal period, hospital delivery and early referral.
