    Global Financial Crisis And Its Impact On Textile Industry In Pakistan

    This research investigates the impact of Global Financial Crisis on textile industry clusters in Pakistan.  A cross sectional data were collected from 25 textile industries by using simple random technique and data were analysis by using E-Views software. Structural questionnaire was the basic tool for measures the performance of textile industry in financial recession in Pakistan.  It was revealed that the industry is in urgent need of financial and technological investments.  It was revealed that Global financial crisis has negative impact on the export of textile industry in Pakistan.  The export of textile related products has decreased by 20 percent due to decrease in textile demand.  It was further revealed that textile industry facing problems such as electricity and high taxes

    An intervention to stop smoking among patients suspected of TB - evaluation of an integrated approach

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In many low- and middle-income countries, where tobacco use is common, tuberculosis is also a major problem. Tobacco use increases the risk of developing tuberculosis, secondary mortality, poor treatment compliance and relapses. In countries with TB epidemic, even a modest relative risk leads to a significant attributable risk. Treating tobacco dependence, therefore, is likely to have benefits for controlling tuberculosis in addition to reducing the non-communicable disease burden associated with smoking. In poorly resourced health systems which face a dual burden of disease secondary to tuberculosis and tobacco, an integrated approach to tackle tobacco dependence in TB control could be economically desirable. During TB screening, health professionals come across large numbers of patients with respiratory symptoms, a significant proportion of which are likely to be tobacco users. These clinical encounters, considered to be "teachable moments", provide a window of opportunity to offer treatment for tobacco dependence.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>We aim to develop and trial a complex intervention to reduce tobacco dependence among TB suspects based on the WHO 'five steps to quit' model. This model relies on assessing personal motivation to quit tobacco use and uses it as the basis for assessing suitability for the different therapeutic options for tobacco dependence.</p> <p>We will use the Medical Research Council framework approach for evaluating complex interventions to: (a) design an evidence-based treatment package (likely to consist of training materials for health professionals and education tools for patients); (b) pilot the package to determine the delivery modalities in TB programme (c) assess the incremental cost-effectiveness of the package compared to usual care using a cluster RCT design; (d) to determine barriers and drivers to the provision of treatment of tobacco dependence within TB programmes; and (e) support long term implementation. The main outcomes to assess the effectiveness would be point abstinence at 4 weeks and continuous abstinence up to 6 months.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>This work will be carried out in Pakistan and is expected to have relevance for other low and middle income countries with high tobacco use and TB incidence. This will enhance our knowledge of the cost-effectiveness of treating tobacco dependence in patients suspected of TB.</p> <p>Trial Registration</p> <p>Trial Registration Number: ISRCTN08829879</p

    Awake craniotomy for resection of intracranial meningioma: First case series from a low- and middle-income country

    Introduction: Awake craniotomy (AC) has emerged as a better modality for resection of intra-axial brain tumors. The advantages are not just related to the preservation of neurological function, but also include early recovery, short hospital stay and possibly lower costs. However, data on AC for meningioma resection is deficient, likely because of concerns related to intra-operative pain and blood loss.Methods: All patients who underwent AC, using awake through-out technique for resection of meningioma, during the last five years, were included in the study. Non-probability consecutive sampling technique was employed. Variables for demographics, and details of diagnosis and surgical procedure were recorded. The outcomes measured were length of hospital stay, worsening of neurological function during surgery and significant intra-operative or post-operative pain.Results: Seventeen patients underwent AC for resection of meningioma during the study period. Eleven of these were grade I meningioma, and six were grade II meningioma. The mean age was 45.8 ± 10.5 years. Presenting complaints were variable, with seizures being the most common (n = 7; 41.2%). The mean duration of surgery was 180.8 ± 36.2 minutes and median estimated blood loss was 450 ml (IQR: 225 ml - 737.5 ml). The mean length of stay in the hospital was 3.1 ± 1.3 days. Only one patient had a prolonged hospital stay of seven days, because of post-operative seizures. Eleven patients (58.3%) had convexity meningioma, 4 (33.3%) had parasagittal meningioma and 1 each had a parafalcine and anterior skull-base meningioma. Simpson grade I resection was performed in 6 (41.7%) patients, grade II resection in 10 (50%) patients, and grade III resection in 1 (5.9%) patient. None of our patients had deterioration in their neurological deficits after surgery and no one required emergency intubation, conversion of surgery to general anesthesia, or redo exploration.Conclusion: AC may be considered a safe modality for surgical resection of convexity and parasagittal meningioma, with no significant risk of intra-operative or post-operative pain, although it requires more evidence. It can be offered to patients who are at higher risk, or are not willing to undergo general anesthesia. Ultimately, it might also be beneficial in terms of reducing overall costs

    Financial Ratios and Stock Return Predictability (Evidence from Pakistan)

    The purpose of this research article is to investigate the ability of earning yield (EY), dividend yield (DY) and book-to-market ratio (B/M), to predict stock returns. The sample of the study consists of 100 non-financial companies listed in the “Karachi Stock Exchange”. The duration of the study is 7 years from 2005 to 2011. To find whether EY, DY and B/M ratios can predict stock returns we have used generalized least square and panal data models. The results indicate that DY and EY ratios has direct positive association with stock return where as B/M ratio has significant negative relationship with stock return. Therefore we can say that the above mentioned ratios are able to predict stock returns, furthermore it can be seen that as compare to dividend yield and earning yield the ratio of book to market has the highest predictive power.     Low Temperature Stress Induced Changes in Biochemical Parameters, Protein Banding Pattern and Expression of Zat12 and Myb Genes in Rice Seedling

    Low temperature stress is one of the main abiotic factors that reduce the productivity of many crops in hilly areas around the world. In this study, rice seedling were exposed to low temperature stress (control, 0°C, -2°C, -4°C and -6°C) for 2 hr to observe its effect on two rice varieties (Basmati-385 and Shaheen Basmati) through ion and proline contents, photosynthetic pigments, total protein content, protein banding pattern and expression of Zat12 and Myb genes. Resulted showed different patterns of accumulation of Na+ K+ and Ca+2 ions with the decrease in temperature in both varieties. Proline accumulation was gradually increased in both varieties with the decrease in temperature. Photosynthetic pigments (Chlorophyll (Chl) a, b and carotene) were negatively affected by low temperature stress in both varieties, however, carotene content was much affected than Chl a and b. Nonsignificant variation in protein contents was observed at all levels of low temperature, but the effects of low temperature stress on protein banding pattern of Basmti-385 and Shaheen Basmati were different at different treatments. RT-PCR results indicated that ZAT12 was upregulated by short term low temperature stress while OsMYB show slight upregulation at -2°C as compared to the other treatments. This study identified that ZAT12 and OsMYB function as a positive regulator to mediate tolerance of rice seedlings at low temperature stress

    Generalized Regression Neural Network and Fitness Dependent Optimization: Application to energy harvesting of centralized TEG systems

    The thermoelectric generator (TEG) system has attracted extensive attention because of its applications in centralized solar heat utilization and recoverable heat energy. The operating efficiency of the TEG system is highly affected by operating conditions. In a series-parallel structure, due to diverse temperature differences, the TEG modules show non-linear performance. Due to the non-uniform temperature distribution (NUTD) condition, several maximum power points (MPPs) appear on the P/V curve. In multiple MPPs, the true global maximum power points (GMPP) are very important for optimum action. The existing conventional technologies have slow tracking speed, low productivity, and unwanted fluctuations in voltage curves. To overcome the TEG system behavior and shortcomings, A novel control technology for the TEG system is proposed, which utilizes the improved generalized regression neural network and fitness dependent optimization (GRNNFDO) to track the GMPP under dynamic operating conditions. Conventional TEG system control techniques are not likely to trace true GMPP. Our novel GRNNFDO can trace the true GMPP for NUTD and under varying temperature conditions In this article, some major contributions in the area of the TEG systems are investigated by solving the issues such as NUTD global maxima tracking, low efficiency of TEG module due to mismatch, and oscillations around optimum point. The results of GRNNFDO are compared with the Cuckoo-search algorithm (CSA), and grasshopper optimization (GHO) algorithm and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Results of GRNNFDO are verified with experiments and authenticated with MATLAB/SIMULINK. The proposed GRNNFDO control technique generates up to 7% more energy than PSO and 60% fast-tracking than meta-heuristic algorithms

    Neuroprotective Effect of Quercetin Against the Detrimental Effects of LPS in the Adult Mouse Brain

    Chronic neuroinflammation is responsible for multiple neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Huntington’s disease. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is an essential component of the gram-negative bacterial cell wall and acts as a potent stimulator of neuroinflammation that mediates neurodegeneration. Quercetin is a natural flavonoid that is abundantly found in fruits and vegetables and has been shown to possess multiple forms of desirable biological activity including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This study aimed to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of quercetin against the detrimental effects of LPS, such as neuroinflammation-mediated neurodegeneration and synaptic/memory dysfunction, in adult mice. LPS [0.25 mg/kg/day, intraperitoneally (I.P.) injections for 1 week]-induced glial activation causes the secretion of cytokines/chemokines and other inflammatory mediators, which further activate the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway and neuronal degeneration. Compared to LPS alone, quercetin (30 mg/kg/day, I.P.) for 2 weeks (1 week prior to the LPS and 1 week cotreated with LPS) significantly reduced activated gliosis and various inflammatory markers and prevented neuroinflammation in the cortex and hippocampus of adult mice. Furthermore, quercetin rescued the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway and neuronal degeneration by regulating Bax/Bcl2, and decreasing activated cytochrome c, caspase-3 activity and cleaving PARP-1 in the cortical and hippocampal regions of the mouse brain. The quercetin treatment significantly reversed the LPS-induced synaptic loss in the cortex and hippocampus of the adult mouse brain and improved the memory performance of the LPS-treated mice. In summary, our results demonstrate that natural flavonoids such as quercetin can be beneficial against LPS-induced neurotoxicity in adult mice

    Study protocol of DIVERGE, the first genetic epidemiological study of major depressive disorder in Pakistan

    INTRODUCTION: Globally, 80% of the burdenof major depressive disorder (MDD) pertains to low- and middle-income countries. Research into genetic and environmental risk factors has the potential to uncover disease mechanisms that may contribute to better diagnosis and treatment of mental illness, yet has so far been largely limited to participants with European ancestry from high-income countries. The DIVERGE study was established to help overcome this gap and investigate genetic and environmental risk factors for MDD in Pakistan. METHODS: DIVERGE aims to enrol 9000 cases and 4000 controls in hospitals across the country. Here, we provide the rationale for DIVERGE, describe the study protocol and characterise the sample using data from the first 500cases. Exploratory data analysis is performed to describe demographics, socioeconomic status, environmental risk factors, family history of mental illness and psychopathology. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Many participants had severe depression with 74% of patients who experienced multiple depressive episodes. It was a common practice to seek help for mental health struggles from faith healers and religious leaders. Socioeconomic variables reflected the local context with a large proportion of women not having access to any education and the majority of participants reporting no savings. CONCLUSION: DIVERGE is a carefully designed case-control study of MDD in Pakistan that captures diverse risk factors. As the largest genetic study in Pakistan, DIVERGE helps address the severe underrepresentation of people from South Asian countries in genetic as well as psychiatric research
