Continued DDT Persistence in Mississippi River Delta Streams: A Case Study

    Get PDF
Fish samples representative of several trophic levels were taken from the Wolf and Loosahatchie Rivers of western Tennessee during the early 1980s. Results indicate that DDT, with metabolites DDD and DDE, remains common in fish tissues in these areas and approaches the levels recommended as maxima for human consumption by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Samples of top carnivores and forage fishes, particularly the gizzard shad, Dorosoma cepedlanum, commonly exceeded 500 ppb DDE. The results are discussed in light of sediment disturbing activities

Don\u27t Believe the Hype : The Construction and Export of African American Images in Hip-Hop Culture.

This study examines recurring motifs and personas in hip-hop. Interviews with influential hip-hop scholars, writers and music industry personnel were conducted and analyzed using qualitative methods. Interview subjects were selected based on their insider knowledge as music critics, hip-hop scholars, ethnomusicologists, publicists, and music industry positions. The vast majority of constructed imagery in hip-hop is based on a single persona, the gangsta. This qualitative analysis reveals why gangsta personas and motifs have become the de facto imagery of hip-hop. Gangsta imagery is repeatedly presented because it sells, it is the most readily-available role, and because of music industry pressures. This study is significant because gangsta imagery impacts African American social knowledge and the generalized perception of blackness. Gangsta imagery has also served to alienate black culture and has caused rifts in the African American community

Doing it For The Dudes : A Comparative Ethnographic Study of Performative Masculinity in Heavy Metal and Hardcore Subcultures

Abstract: This ethnographic study compares and contrasts performative masculinities of the overwhelmingly male heavy metal (HM) and hardcore (HC) subcultures. Conclusions derived from this research indicate the following: identities associated with HM and HC conflate masculinity with working-classness, HM and HC identities (and thus masculinities) are merging at present; participation in HM and HC enclaves can serve to symbolically marginalize constituents, and this symbolic marginalization can result in repercussions in the lived world outside of subculture; the hegemonic masculinity of HM and HC subcultures is subsidiary hegemonic masculinity, meaning that it supports the male-dominated structure of mainstream culture without empowering HM and HC males in an extra-subcultural sense; and that despite these negative ramifications, HM and HC participants still find the shared identities and community interaction of these enclaves to be empowering. Keywords: heavy metal, hardcore, subculture, masculinity, performativity, gender, class, ideology, rock music, identit
