Jet Results and Jet Reconstruction Techniques in p+p and their Prospects in Pb+Pb Collisions in CMS

Copious production of very energetic jets is expected at the LHC due to the large increase in collision energy. Jet reconstruction at these high center of mass energies will provide crucial leverage to map out the QCD evolution of parton energy loss and a unique insight into the nature of the hot QCD matter. This article presents jet reconstruction techniques and the preliminary jet results in p+p collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Jet reconstruction prospects for the heavy ion collisions are also discussed.Comment: Presented in Jets in Proton-Proton and Heavy-Ion Collisions August 12-14 2010, Pragu

Jet quenching measurements using leading particles and their correlations suffer from known biases, which can be removed via direct reconstruction of jets in central heavy ion collisions. In this talk, we discuss several modern jet reconstruction algorithms and background subtraction techniques that are appropriate to heavy ion collisions.Comment: Proceedings of the 24th Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics, South Padre Island, Texas, 5-12 April 200

High pTp_{T} inclusive hadron and photon spectra in pp and PbPb collisions

In this article, we report the inclusive charged hadron and isolated photon spectra at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76 TeV PbPb collisions measured with the CMS detector at LHC. Charged particle momentum spectra are compared to a constructed reference measurement of proton-proton collisions at s=2.76\sqrt{s}=2.76 TeV by using a combination of xTx_T scaling and direct interpolation at fixed pTp_{T}. Photon results are compared to next to leading order calculations at the same center of mass energy. Nuclear modification factors (RAAR_{AA}) are calculated to study the properties of the medium. While a large suppression is observed in the charged particle RAAR_{AA} at high transverse momentum, isolated photons show no modifications, revealing that PbPb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76 TeV produce a strongly interacting colored medium.Comment: PANIC 2011 Meeting Proceeding
