    Personality perception based on LinkedIn profiles

    __Purpose:__ Job-related social networking websites (e.g. LinkedIn) are often used in the recruitment process because the profiles contain valuable information such as education level and work experience. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether people can accurately infer a profile owner’s self-rated personality traits based on the profile on a job-related social networking site. __Design/methodology/approach:__ In two studies, raters inferred personality traits (the Big Five and self-presentation) from LinkedIn profiles (total n=275). The authors related those inferences to self-rated personality by the profile owner to test if the inferences were accurate. __Findings:__ Using information gained from a LinkedIn profile allowed for better inferences of extraversion and self-presentation of the profile owner (r’s of 0.24-0.29). __Practical implications:__ When using a LinkedIn profile to estimate trait extraversion or self-presentation, one becomes 1.5 times as likely to actually select the person with higher trait extraversion compared to the person with lower trait extraversion. __Originality/value:__ Although prior research tested whether profiles of social networking sites (such as Facebook) can be used to accurately infer self-rated personality, this was not yet tested for job-related social networking sites (such as LinkedIn). The results indicate that profiles at job-related social networks, in spite of containing only relatively standardized information, “leak” information about the owner’s personality

    Optimal nutrition serves to maintain normal organ function and to preserve body energy stores to guarantee survival during times of shortage of food. Especially total body protein content is an important determinant of survival. However, recommendations about nutrition refer mostly to total energy intake with either no emphasis on total protein content or protein intake only considered as a fixed percentage of caloric intake. This paper focuses on the role of total body protein mass or lean body mass (= mass of organs and muscle) (LBM) on survival of healthy humans and critically ill patients. Recommendations on the amount of protein per kg bodyweight are made based on the scarce evidence available in humans

    Omega-3 long-chain fatty acids strongly induce angiopoietin-like 4 in humans

    Angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGPTL4) is a regulator of LPL activity. In this study we examined whether different fatty acids have a differential effect on plasma ANGPTL4 levels during hyperinsulinemia in healthy lean males. In 10 healthy lean males, 3 hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamps were performed during concomitant 6 h intravenous infusion of soybean oil (Intralipid (R); rich in PUFA), olive oil (Clinoleic (R); rich in MUFA) and control saline. In 10 other healthy lean males, 2 hyperinsulinemic clamps were performed during infusion of a mixed lipid emulsion containing a mixture of fish oil (FO), medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), and long-chain triglycerides (LCTs) (FO/MCT/LCT; SMOFlipid (R)) or saline. FFA levels of approximately 0.5 mmol/l were reached during each lipid infusion. Plasma ANGPTL4 decreased during hyperinsulinemia by 32% (18-52%) from baseline. This insulin-mediated decrease in ANGPTL4 concentrations was partially reduced during concomitant infusion of olive oil and completely blunted during concomitant infusion of soybean oil and FO/MCT/LCT. The reduction in insulin sensitivity was similar between all lipid infusions. In accordance, incubation of rat hepatoma cells with the polyunsaturated fatty acid C22:6 increased ANGPTL4 expression by 70-fold, compared with 27-fold by the polyunsaturated fatty acid C18:2, and 15-fold by the monounsaturated fatty acid C18:1. These results suggest that ANGPTL4 is strongly regulated by fatty acids in humans, and is also dependent on the type of fatty acid.-Brands, M., H. P. Sauerwein, M. T. Ackermans, S. Kersten, and M. J.     No Difference in Glycosphingolipid Metabolism and Mitochondrial Function in Glucocorticoid-Induced Insulin Resistance in Healthy Men

    Objective: Glucocorticoids (GCs) are well known to induce insulin resistance; however, mechanisms that cause the impairement of the insulin signaling pathway have not yet been identified. In this study we measured whether GC-induced insulin resistance in humans is related to changes in muscle ceramide, GM3, and muscle mitochondrial function. Methods: In a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, dose-response intervention study, 32 healthy males (aged 22 ± 3 years; body mass index 22.4 ± 1.7 kg/m(-2)) were allocated to prednisolone (PRED) 7.5 mg once daily (n = 12), PRED 30 mg once daily (n = 12), or placebo (n = 8) for 2 weeks using block randomization. Insulin sensitivity was measured by hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp before and after treatment. Muscle biopsies were performed to measure ceramide, monosialodihexosylganglioside (GM3), and mitochondrial function. Results: Peripheral insulin sensitivity was dose dependently decreased after the PRED treatment. Muscle ceramide and GM3 concentration and mitochondrial function were not altered by 2 weeks of PRED treatment. Conclusion: Short-term GC treatment dose dependently impaired whole-body insulin sensitivity in healthy males, without concomitant changes in muscle ceramide, GM3, or mitochondrial function.
