    Neural-Based Nonlinear Device Models for Intermodulation Analysis

    A new procedure to learn a nonlinear model together with its derivative parameters using a composite neural network is presented.So far neural networks have never been used to extract large-signal device model accounting for distortion parameters.Applying this method to FET devices leads to nonlinear models for current- voltage functions which allow improved prediction of weak and mildly device nonlinearities in the whole bias region. The resulting models have demonstrated to be suitable for both small-signal and large-signal analyses,including intermodulation distortion prediction

    Sintering behavior of a six-oxide silicate bioactive glass for scaffold manufacturing

    The intrinsic brittleness of bioactive glasses (BGs) is one of the main barriers to the widespread use of three-dimensional porous BG-derived bone grafts (scaffolds) in clinical practice. Among all the available strategies for improving the mechanical properties of BG-based scaffolds, strut densification upon sintering treatments at high temperatures represents a relatively easy approach, but its implementation might lead to undesired and poorly predictable decrease in porosity, mass transport properties and bioactivity resulting from densification and devitrification phenomena occurring in the material upon heating. The aim of the present work was to investigate the sinter-crystallization of a highly bioactive SiO2-P2O5-CaO–MgO–Na2O–K2O glass (47.5B composition) in reference to its suitability for the fabrication of bonelike foams. The thermal behavior of 47.5B glass particles was investigated upon sintering at different temperatures in the range of 600–850◦C by means of combined thermal analyses (differential thermal analysis (DTA) and hot-stage microscopy (HSM)). Then, XRD measurements were carried out to identify crystalline phases developed upon sintering. Finally, porous scaffolds were produced by a foam replica method in order to evaluate the effect of the sintering temperature on the mechanical properties under compression loading conditions. Assessing a relationship between mechanical properties and sintering temperature, or in other words between scaffold performance and fabrication process, is a key step towards the rationale design of optimized scaffolds for tissue repair

    Aerodynamic analysis and optimization of a regional transport aircraft

    The geometry of a typical regional transport aircraft is modified to reduce drag and improve performances, in particular cruise speed. Once performed a preliminary aerodynamic analysis on the original geometry, in order to detect those portions of the body shape whose modification mostly influences drag variation, an automatic procedure, manageable trough MATLAB, allows to modify those parts using interpolating curves and surfaces, espectively NURBS and NURBCOONS. Within the modification loop, each new geometry is analyzed trough a panel code solver until optimized shapes are found. Finally, the optimized body is exported into a CAD format (IGES) suitable for design and production. The optimization process has guaranteed a reduction of 3 percent of the total drag and an increase of 2 percent of cruise speed respect to the original configuration

    Acute stress affects peripersonal space representation in cortisol stress responders.

    Peripersonal space is the representation of the space near the body. It is implemented by a dedicated multisensory-motor network, whose purpose is to predict and plan interactions with the environment, and which can vary depending on environmental circumstances. Here, we investigated the effect on the PPS representation of an experimentally induced stress response and compared it to a control, non-stressful, manipulation. We assessed PPS representation in healthy humans, before and after a stressful manipulation, by quantifying visuotactile interactions as a function of the distance from the body, while monitoring salivary cortisol concentration. While PPS representation was not significantly different between the control and experimental group, a relation between cortisol response and changes in PPS emerged within the experimental group. Participants who showed a cortisol stress response presented enhanced visuotactile integration for stimuli close to the body and reduced for far stimuli. Conversely, individuals with a less pronounced cortisol response showed a reduced difference in visuotactile integration between the near and the far space. In our interpretation, physiological stress resulted in a freezing-like response, where multisensory-motor resources are allocated only to the area immediately surrounding the body

    In December 2019, a novel severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) from a new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) was recognized in the city of Wuhan, China. Rapidly, it became an epidemic in China and has now spread throughout the world reaching pandemic proportions. High mortality rates characterize SARS-CoV-2 disease (COVID-19), which mainly affects the elderly, causing unrestrained cytokines-storm and subsequent pulmonary shutdown, also suspected micro thromboembolism events. At the present time, no specific and dedicated treatments, nor approved vaccines, are available, though very promising data come from the use of anti-inflammatory, anti-malaria, and anti-coagulant drugs. In addition, it seems that males are more susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 than females, with males 65% more likely to die from the infection than females. Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) and Chinese scientists show that of all cases about 1.7% of women who contract the virus will die compared with 2.8% of men, and data from Hong Kong hospitals state that 32% of male and 15% of female COVID-19 patients required intensive care or died. On the other hand, the long-term fallout of coronavirus may be worse for women than for men due to social and psychosocial reasons. Regardless of sex-or gender-biased data obtained from WHO and those gathered from sometimes controversial scientific journals, some central points should be considered. Firstly, SARS-CoV-2 has a strong interaction with the human ACE2 receptor, which plays an essential role in cell entry together with transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2); it is interesting to note that the ACE2 gene lays on the X-chromosome, thus allowing females to be potentially heterozygous and differently assorted compared to men who are definitely hemizygous. Secondly, the higher ACE2 expression rate in females, though controversial, might ascribe them the worst prognosis, in contrast with worldwide epidemiological data. Finally, several genes involved in inflammation are located on the X-chromosome, which also contains high number of immune-related genes responsible for innate and adaptive immune responses to infection. Other genes, out from the RAS-pathway, might directly or indirectly impact on the ACE1/ACE2 balance by influencing its main actors (e.g., ABO locus, SRY, SOX3, ADAM17). Unexpectedly, the higher levels of ACE2 or ACE1/ACE2 rebalancing might improve the outcome of COVID-19 in both sexes by reducing inflammation, thrombosis, and death. Moreover, X-heterozygous females might also activate a mosaic advantage and show more pronounced sex-related differences resulting in a sex dimorphism, further favoring them in counteracting the progression of the SARS-CoV-2 infection

    ABSTRACT: Research that focuses on the use of high value-added bioproducts for industrial applications is essential for the implementation of sustainable approaches forecasting a bio-based economy. The effective use of biomass feedstocks, particularly lignocellulosic materials, in large-scale applications will evolve from innovative research aimed at the development and implementation of biorefineries established for specific feedstocks. In this context, an important step is the concept of fractionating biomass into its core constituents (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin) for further enhanced valorization. Contrary to the valorization of cellulose fraction, which has been extensively studied, there is a gap in the valorization of the hemicellulose fraction (xylose- rich substrate) towards bioproducts. In this context, the present work aims to explore the ability of the haloarchaeon Halorhabdus utahensis (DSM-12940) to ferment xylose (or xylose-rich substrates) to high added-value bioproducts, such as pigments, exopolysaccharides (EPS) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs).N/

    The self and the Bayesian brain: Testing probabilistic models of body ownership through a self-localization task.

    Simple multisensory manipulations can induce the illusory misattribution of external objects to one's own body, allowing to experimentally investigate body ownership. In this context, body ownership has been conceptualized as the result of the online Bayesian optimal estimation of the probability that one object belongs to the body from the congruence of multisensory inputs. This idea has been highly influential, as it provided a quantitative basis to bottom-up accounts of self-consciousness. However, empirical evidence fully supporting this view is scarce, as the optimality of the putative inference process has not been assessed rigorously. This pre-registered study aimed at filling this gap by testing a Bayesian model of hand ownership based on spatial and temporal visuo-proprioceptive congruences. Model predictions were compared to data from a virtual-reality reaching task, whereby reaching errors induced by a spatio-temporally mismatching virtual hand have been used as an implicit proxy of hand ownership. To rigorously test optimality, we compared the Bayesian model versus alternative non-Bayesian models of multisensory integration, and independently assess unisensory components and compare them to model estimates. We found that individually measured values of proprioceptive precision correlated with those fitted from our reaching task, providing compelling evidence that the underlying visuo-proprioceptive integration process approximates Bayesian optimality. Furthermore, reaching errors correlated with explicit ownership ratings at the single individual and trial level. Taken together, these results provide novel evidence that body ownership, a key component of self-consciousness, can be truly described as the bottom-up, behaviourally optimal processing of multisensory inputs

    Healthcare workers training courses on vaccinations: A flexible format easily adaptable to different healthcare settings.

    Since 2017, Italy has expanded the compulsory vaccination from 4 to 10 for those aged 0 to 16 years. Because of the great organizational effort required for the immunization services, minor attention was given to the vaccinations not included among the mandatory ones. This situation led to a real difficulty in harmonizing the vaccination procedures even inside a single region. In the Lazio region, the Laboratory of Vaccinology of the University of Rome Tor Vergata established a working group to create a new training model for healthcare professionals. The course program proposed an update of three vaccinations which are not mandatory but actively offered. It included the same part of scientific updating and a variable part based on local experiences. A specific anonymous questionnaire on knowledge and attitude was administered. The study aimed to propose a general format of training courses for vaccination centers adaptable to the individual local health units (ASLs) and to evaluate through questionnaires. The results show differences in knowledge and attitudes toward non‐mandatory vaccinations among the ASLs of Lazio, confirming the usefulness of a support to make knowledge and procedures homogeneous. This model could be adapted to any healthcare setting and exported to other services
