    Balanced metrics and noncommutative Kaehler geometry

    In this paper we show how Einstein metrics are naturally described using the quantization of the algebra of functions on a Kahler manifold M. In this setup one interprets M as the phase space itself, equipped with the Poisson brackets inherited from the Kahler 2-form. We compare the geometric quantization framework with several deformation quantization approaches. We find that the balanced metrics appear naturally as a result of setting the vacuum energy to be the constant function on the moduli space of semiclassical vacua. In the classical limit these metrics become Kahler-Einstein (when M admits such metrics). Finally, we sketch several applications of this formalism, such as explicit constructions of special Lagrangian submanifolds in compact Calabi-Yau manifolds.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, Late

    We develop an iterative method for finding solutions to the hermitian Yang-Mills equation on stable holomorphic vector bundles, following ideas recently developed by Donaldson. As illustrations, we construct numerically the hermitian Einstein metrics on the tangent bundle and a rank three vector bundle on P^2. In addition, we find a hermitian Yang-Mills connection on a stable rank three vector bundle on the Fermat quintic.Comment: 25 pages, 2 figure

    Constraining the Kahler Moduli in the Heterotic Standard Model

    Phenomenological implications of the volume of the Calabi-Yau threefolds on the hidden and observable M-theory boundaries, together with slope stability of their corresponding vector bundles, constrain the set of Kaehler moduli which give rise to realistic compactifications of the strongly coupled heterotic string. When vector bundles are constructed using extensions, we provide simple rules to determine lower and upper bounds to the region of the Kaehler moduli space where such compactifications can exist. We show how small these regions can be, working out in full detail the case of the recently proposed Heterotic Standard Model. More explicitely, we exhibit Kaehler classes in these regions for which the visible vector bundle is stable.     Numerical Calabi-Yau metrics

    We develop numerical methods for approximating Ricci flat metrics on Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in projective spaces. Our approach is based on finding balanced metrics, and builds on recent theoretical work by Donaldson. We illustrate our methods in detail for a one parameter family of quintics.
