Power electronics technologies for renewable energy sources
Over the last decades, power grids are facing significant improvements mainly due to the
integration of more and more technologies. In particular, renewable energy sources (RES) are
contributing to moving from centralized energy production to a new paradigm of distributed
energy production. Analyzing in more detail the requirements of the diverse technologies of
RES, it is possible to identify a common and key point: power electronics. In fact, power
electronics is the key technology to embrace the RES technologies towards controllability and
the success of sustainability of power grids. In this context, this book chapter is focused on the
analysis of diverse RES technologies from the point of view of power electronics, including
the introduction and explanation of the operating principle of the most relevant RES, both in
onshore and offshore scenarios. Additionally, are also presented the main topologies of power
electronics converters used in the interface of RES.(undefined
A unified power converter for solar PV and energy storage in dc microgrids
This paper deals with the development and experimental validation of a unified power converter for application in dc microgrids, contemplating the inclusion of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and energy storage systems (ESS), namely batteries. Considering the limitations presented by the current structure of the power grid, mostly highlighted by the accentuated integration of emerging technologies (ESS, renewables, electric vehicles, and electrical appliances that natively operate in dc), it is extremely pertinent to adopt new topologies, architectures, and paradigms. In particular, decentralized power systems, unified topologies, and correspondent control algorithms are representative of a new trend towards a reduction in the number of power converters. Thus, the developed solution is designed to operaSAVE-15te at a nominal power of 3.6 kW, with a switching frequency of 100 kHz, and in four operation modes concerning power flow: (i) solar PV panels to batteries (PV2B); (ii) solar PV panels to dc grid (PV2G); (iii) batteries to dc grid (B2G); (iv) dc grid to batteries (G2B). Moreover, a dual active bridge converter guarantees galvanic isolation, while two back-end dc–dc converters are responsible for interfacing solar PV panels and batteries. The experimental validation of the proposed unified power converter proves its application value to self-consumption production units. This work has been supported by FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within the R&D Units Project Scope: UIDB/00319/2020. MeerKLASS: MeerKAT Large Area Synoptic Survey
We discuss the ground-breaking science that will be possible with a wide area
survey, using the MeerKAT telescope, known as MeerKLASS (MeerKAT Large Area
Synoptic Survey). The current specifications of MeerKAT make it a great fit for
science applications that require large survey speeds but not necessarily high
angular resolutions. In particular, for cosmology, a large survey over for hours will potentially provide the first
ever measurements of the baryon acoustic oscillations using the 21cm intensity
mapping technique, with enough accuracy to impose constraints on the nature of
dark energy. The combination with multi-wavelength data will give unique
additional information, such as exquisite constraints on primordial
non-Gaussianity using the multi-tracer technique, as well as a better handle on
foregrounds and systematics. Such a wide survey with MeerKAT is also a great
match for HI galaxy studies, providing unrivalled statistics in the pre-SKA era
for galaxies resolved in the HI emission line beyond local structures at z >
0.01. It will also produce a large continuum galaxy sample down to a depth of
about 5\,Jy in L-band, which is quite unique over such large areas and
will allow studies of the large-scale structure of the Universe out to high
redshifts, complementing the galaxy HI survey to form a transformational
multi-wavelength approach to study galaxy dynamics and evolution. Finally, the
same survey will supply unique information for a range of other science
applications, including a large statistical investigation of galaxy clusters as
well as produce a rotation measure map across a huge swathe of the sky. The
MeerKLASS survey will be a crucial step on the road to using SKA1-MID for
cosmological applications and other commensal surveys, as described in the top
priority SKA key science projects (abridged).Comment: Larger version of the paper submitted to the Proceedings of Science,

Adjuvant trastuzumab in the treatment of her-2-positive early breast cancer: a meta-analysis of published randomized trials

Abstract

Background

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the U.S. and Western Europe. Amplification of the her-2/neu gene occurs in approximately 25% of invasive ductal carcinomas of the breast. The first HER-2/neu-targeted approach to reach the clinic was trastuzumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody directed against the extracellular domain of the HER-2/neu protein. Trastuzumab therapy prolongs the survival of patients with metastático HER-2/neu-overexpressing breast cancer when combined with chemotherapy and has recently been demonstrated to lead to dramatic improvements in disease-free survival when used in the adjuvant therapy setting in combination with or following chemotherapy. Here, we performed a meta-analysis of completed clinical trials of adjuvant trastuzumab in the adjuvant setting. Survival, recurrence, brain metastases, cardiotoxicity and directions for future research are discussed.

Methods

A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCT) was performed comparing adjuvant trastuzumab treatment for HER2-positive early breast cancer (EBC) to observation. The MEDLINE, EMBASE, CANCERLIT and Cochrane Library databases, and abstracts published in the annual proceedings were systematically searched for evidence. Relevant reports were reviewed by two reviewers independently and the references from these reports were searched for additional trials, using guidelines set by QUOROM statement criteria.

Results

Pooled results from that five randomized trials of adjuvant Trastuzumab showed a significant reduction of mortality (p < 0.00001), recurrence (p < 0.00001), metastases rates (p < 0.00001) and second tumors other than breast cancer (p = 0.007) as compared to no adjuvant Trastuzumab patients. There were more grade III or IV cardiac toxicity after trastuzumab (203/4555 = 4.5%) versus no trastuzumab (86/4562 = 1.8%). The likelihood of cardiac toxicity was 2.45-fold higher (95% CI 1.89 – 3.16) in trastuzumab arms, however that result was associated with heterogeneity. The likelihood of brain metastases was 1.82-fold higher (95% CI 1.16 – 2.85) in patients who received trastuzumab.

Conclusion

The results from this meta-analysis are sufficiently compelling to consider 1 year of adjuvant trastuzumab treatment for women with HER-2-positive EBC based on the risk: benefit ratio demonstrated in these studies. Adequate assessment of HER-2/neu status is critical, and careful cardiac monitoring is warranted because of cardiac toxicity. Clinical trials should be designed to answer unsolved questions.</p
Whole brain radiotherapy with radiosensitizer for brain metastases

Abstract

Purpose

To study the efficacy of whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) with radiosensitizer in comparison with WBRT alone for patients with brain metastases in terms of overall survival, disease progression, response to treatment and adverse effects of treatment.

Methods

A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCT) was performed in order to compare WBRT with radiosensitizer for brain metastases and WBRT alone. The MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, and Cochrane Library databases, in addition to Trial registers, bibliographic databases, and recent issues of relevant journals were researched. Significant reports were reviewed by two reviewers independently.

Results

A total of 8 RCTs, yielding 2317 patients were analyzed. Pooled results from this 8 RCTs of WBRT with radiosensitizer have not shown a meaningful improvement on overall survival compared to WBRT alone OR = 1.03 (95% CI0.84–1.25, p = 0.77). Also, there was no difference in local brain tumor response OR = 0.8(95% CI 0.5 – 1.03) and brain tumor progression (OR = 1.11, 95% CI 0.9 – 1.3) when the two arms were compared.

Conclusion

Our data show that WBRT with the following radiosentizers (ionidamine, metronidazole, misonodazole, motexafin gadolinium, BUdr, efaproxiral, thalidomide), have not improved significatively the overall survival, local control and tumor response compared to WBRT alone for brain metastases. However, 2 of them, motexafin- gadolinium and efaproxiral have been shown in recent publications (lung and breast) to have positive action in lung and breast carcinoma brain metastases in association with WBRT.</p
Taxonomy of the order Mononegavirales : update 2016
In 2016, the order Mononegavirales was emended through the addition of two new families (Mymonaviridae and Sunviridae), the elevation of the paramyxoviral subfamily Pneumovirinae to family status (Pneumoviridae), the addition of five free-floating genera (Anphevirus, Arlivirus, Chengtivirus, Crustavirus, and Wastrivirus), and several other changes at the genus and species levels. This article presents the updated taxonomy of the order Mononegavirales as now accepted by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV)
