Channel-Aware Congestion Control in Vehicular Cyber-Physical Systems
In vehicular cyber-physical systems, cars are connected to create a mobile network called a vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) to perform various functions, including improved awareness of the surrounding environment. Moving vehicles continually broadcast beacon signals containing information such as position, heading, acceleration, steering angle, vehicle size, and accident notification. However, channel congestion in dense traffic conditions adversely affects network performance. To resolve congestion in VANETs, several works in the literature have studied congestion control. However, they have considered packet loss only as an indication of channel congestion regardless of channel condition. In this paper, we present a channel-aware congestion control algorithm (CACC) that controls the transmission power and data rate. We take into account the received signal strength (RSS) when diagnosing packet loss to determine channel conditions, such as severe fading or channel congestion. In the case of severe fading, we decrease the data rate for a more robust modulation and coding scheme. Additionally, we adjust the transmission power to maintain a desirable packet error rate. Our simulation results show that CACC significantly outperforms other distributed congestion control algorithms by reducing the packet loss rate and increasing the packet delivery ratio.1

Fluid-filled Giant Bulla Treated with Percutaneous Drainage and Talc Sclerotherapy: A Modified Brompton Technique
A 75-year-old man who was diagnosed as having a fluid-filled giant bulla was treated with a modified Brompton technique due to his poor performance status. Percutaneous drainage, suction, and talc sclerotherapy through a Foley catheter can be good treatment options for patients with conditions that are too poor to allow surgical intervention, especially if there is adhesion between a giant bulla and parietal pleura. Talc can also be used safely when mixed with normal saline as a sclerosant
A Surgically Treated Case of Chronic Necrotizing Aspergillosis with Pleural Invasion
Aspergillus is a ubiquitous fungus and can cause many levels of disease severity. Chronic necrotizing aspergillosis is a rare disease and few cases have been reported in Korea. We experienced a case of pleural aspergillosis that was treated successfully with medical and surgical interventions. The 52-year-old man who was diagnosed with chronic necrotizing pulmonary aspergillosis underwent surgical treatment including a lobectomy, decortication, and myoplasty. The patient was also medically treated with amphotericin B followed by voriconazole. Pleural irrigation with amphotericin B was also performed. Genome-Based Construction of the Metabolic Pathways of Orientia tsutsugamushi and Comparative Analysis within the Rickettsiales Order
Orientia tsutsugamushi, the causative agent of
scrub typhus, is an obligate intracellular
bacterium that belongs to the order of
Rickettsiales. Recently, we have reported that
O. tsutsugamushi has a unique
genomic structure, consisting of highly
repetitive sequences, and suggested that it may
provide valuable insight into the evolution of
intracellular bacteria. Here, we have used
genomic information to construct the major
metabolic pathways of
O. tsutsugamushi and performed a
comparative analysis of the metabolic genes and
pathways of O. tsutsugamushi
with other members of the Rickettsiales order.
While O. tsutsugamushi has the
largest genome among the members of this order,
mainly due to the presence of repeated
sequences, its metabolic pathways have been
highly streamlined. Overall, the metabolic
pathways of O. tsutsugamushi
were similar to Rickettsia but
there were notable differences in several
pathways including carbohydrate metabolism, the
TCA cycle, and the synthesis of cell wall
components as well as in the transport systems.
Our results will provide a useful guide to the
postgenomic analysis of
O. tsutsugamushi and lead
to a better understanding of the virulence and
physiology of this intracellular pathogen
