Research to study the synchronization technology to improve the reproductive of captive sambar deer (Rusa unicolor brookei) was conducted using 10 hinds and three stags aged 8 -10 years. Estrous induction was done using local intravaginal spon containing 450 mg Medroxy progesterone acetate (MPA), inserted the intravaginaly for 9 days. At 2 to 6 days post-sponge withdrawal, hinds were put together with stags in hard antler conditions. The results showed that retention rates of sponge reached 100% and no sign of irritation on the vagina. Two days post sponge withdrawal. Three hinds showed an estrous behavior and were mated, whereas four other hinds showed estrous behavior three days post sponge withdrawal. Overall 90% of hinds gave fawns at the end of pregnancy whit length of gestation 235,66 ± 3,60 days (SD). It can be concluded that synchronization using locally made sponge showed a positive response in sambar deer. (Animal Production 11(1): 23-27 (2009

A study was conducted in determining the contents of alkaloid, tannin and nutritional Values from six browses fed to fattening cattle in Timor island. The samples Were gmelina (Gmelina arborea Roxb.),pates/lamtoro (Leucaena leucocephala [Lamk.J De Wit),daun kupu-kupu (Bauhinia malabarica Roxb.), gala-galaAuri (Sesbania grandiflora [Li Pers.l gamal (Gliriddia sep/um [lick] Steud.).and kabesak (Acacialeucoohloea Willd.).Samples were collected during wet and dry seasons. Results showed that total number of alkaloid compounds varied from 14 to 30.There was an increase in concentration for alkaloid and tannin from Wet to dry season, however the concentrations were low (< 1%).The increase in the concentrations between seasons Were ranged from 20% to 32096.Nutritional values of the browse during wet season were considered high, however there is a need in evaluating the nutritional values of the browses during dry season as well

Hand-Rearing Technique of Tropical Deer From Birth to Weaning A

A technique in hand-rearing of tropical deer from birth to weaning age was developed using 52 sambar (Cervus unicolor) fawns. Fawns were best snatched between 24 to 48 hrs after birth. A milk powder specially made for daii calves was the best compared to the homogenized commercial milk. Suitable length of the artificial teat was between 3 to 4.2 cm, with the slit length of 3 mm. The main problems during the rearing time were the refusal in taking the first artificial mik diarrhoea, bloat and suckling the penis, button or anal areas. Giving moist dirts of 112 teaspoon once a day after the feeding would reduce the incident of bloating or diarrhoea

Deer Frozen Semen Quality in Tris Sucrose and Tris Glucose Extender with Different Glycerol Concentrations

In order to improve Timor deer (Cervus timorensis) frozen semen quality, the influence of sugar and glycerol concentration on semen characteristics of sperm was investigated. The semen was collected from five sexually mature Timor deer using an electroejaculator. The semen was evaluated and divided into six equal tubes and diluted with Tris sucrose glycerol 10% (TSG10); Tris sucrose glycerol 12% (TSG12); Tris sucrose glycerol 14% (TSG14); Tris glucose glycerol 10% (TGG10); Tris glucose glycerol 12% (TGG12); and Tris glucose glycerol 14% (TGG14). The diluted semen was packed in 0.3 ml minitub straw, equilibrated at 5 oC for 4 hours and frozen on liquid nitrogen vapor for 10 minutes. The total of forward motility, viability, acrosome integrity and membrane integrity were assessed in fresh, after equilibration and after thawing. Results demonstrated that the percentage of sperm motility in TSG10was higher (P (63.93±7.23%). The sperm in TSG10 and TSG14 extender were superior in acrosome as well as in membrane integrity. It was concluded that Tris Sucrose with 10% glycerol protected Timor deer sperm better than other combinations

The aims of study was to compare the glycerol concentration in Tris glucose egg yolk (TGEY) diluents on the quality of deer frozen semen. Semen was collected from 5 Timor deer using electroejaculator. Immediately after collection the semen was evaluated macroscopic and microscopically. After initial evaluation, the semen was divided into three tubes and extended with Tris egg yolk with three different glycerol concentrations, which were 10% (TGEY10); 12% (TGEY12) and 14% (TGEY14). The sperm motility, viability, acrosome intact and membrane intact were evaluated in raw semen, after equilibration and after thawing. The results showed that there were no differences (p>0.05) on the sperm motility, viability as well as sperm acrosome intact. Sperm membrane intact in TGEY10 (52.50±5.89%) and TGEY14 (51.50±4.12 %) were higher (p<0.05) than in TGEY12 (49.00±6.58). It was concluded that 10, 12 or 14% glycerol concentration can be used for Timor deer semen cryopreservation

Rantai Pasokan Produk Tumbuhan Gaharu (Aquilaria Spp.) Asal Merauke, Papua

Papua is Claimed to Have High Production of Gaharu (Aquilaria spp.) that is Mainly Extracted from Swamp Areas. However, it is still a polemic whether this claim is true and what is the real production level. Therefore, a field survey was conducted in Jayapura and Merauke (Papua) and Probolinggo (East Java) to unveil the actual condition of the gaharu production and its condition. Interviews were made with local forestry officers (BBKSDA) and local traders in Jayapura and Merauke, shipping companies, warehouse administrators and port administrators in Probolinggo, East Java as the final destination sea port. The results showed that the gaharu taken from swamp areas in the region of Merauke was proven by BBKSDA officials. In one year, the legal production of gaharu in the form of kamedangan reached 100 tons, while similar amount was thought to be slipped away in the illegal trades. Field survey in 2007 conducted by local BBKSDA officers in Asmat and Mappi districts showed a high production of gaharu in the form of wet kamedangan. Gaharu sea freighters at least carried 175 sacks/trip, with special freighters could carry up to 2.100 sacks/trip. The mean weight of each sack was between 58-90 kg with the mean water content ranged from 54-87.39%. Special quota criteria is required to be established on the basis of its quality for Merauke region to avoid problems on undervalue or misconception of the products and production level. Verification on the gaharu tree species originated from Papua region is also still needed

Kualitas Kriopreservasi Semen Rusa Bawean {Axis Kuhlii (Temminck, 1836)} Hasil Penangkaran [Quality of Cryopreserved Semen of Captive Bawean Deer {Axis Kuhlii (Temminck, 1836)}]

Bawean Deer {Axis kuhlii (Temminck, 1836)} is an endemic deer species from Bawean island, Indonesia. Under the National Protection act, the species is listed as protected and in the IUCN is categorized as Critically Endangered. In order to maintain the existence of these species, wildlife conservation of germplasm is needed through development of technique of sperm cryopreservation for Bawean deer semen. The sperm were collected from captive animals in Station for Beef Cattle Research Center, Ministry of Agriculture, at Grati, Pasuruan, which consisted of two adult males and two sub-adult males. The research objective was to determine the quality and quantity of preserved sperm from captive deer Bawean in the form of frozen semen for conservation needs and further USAge. Prior to sperm collections, the animal was anesthetized with mixture of xylazine and ketamin. Sperm was then collected by an electroejaculator using a 2-cm probe diameter and 17 cm of length. Extender solution used was tris glycerol. The semen was able to be collected only from two adult stags with sperm motility of 50-60% and sperm concentration was in the range of 500-1140 x 106sel/ml. This study suggested the need for monitoring the developmentof sperm in relation to antler development
