    APPLYING PEER TEACHING TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ GRAMMAR ACHIEVEMENT

    This study was aimed to improve the students’ grammar achievement, especially in using conditional sentences by applying peer teaching technique. The subject of the study was the third semester students of English Education Study Program in academic year 2017/ 2018. This study was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research (CAR) which had been conducted in two cycles and each cycle consisted of three meetings. The instruments of collecting data were quantitative data (grammar test and questionnaire) and qualitative data (observation checklist and fieldnotes). The results of the test showed that the mean score of pre test was 15, formative test was 35 and post test was 63. The result of observation checklist and fieldnotes showed that the students were interested in teaching and learning conditional sentences by applying peer teaching technique. These indicated that there was a significant improvement of the students’ grammar achievement by applying peer teaching technique

    PELATIHAN PENGUASAAN KOSAKATA BAHASA INGGRIS DENGAN MENERAPKAN MODEL PEMBELAJARAN MAKE A MATCH BAGI SISWA SD DI KELURAHAN TUNGGURONO KOTA BINJAI

    Kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris dengan menerapkan model pembelajaran Make A Match bagi siswa SD di Kelurahan Tunggurono Kota Binjai. Kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan selama 2 (dua) hari yakni pada hari Sabtu-Minggu, 25-26 Agustus 2018 pukul 16.00 WIB-18.00 WIB. Peserta didik dalam pelatihan ini adalah siswa SD di Kelurahan Tunggurono Kota Binjai dengan kisaran usia 6 tahun-12 tahun. Adapun jumlah peserta didik dalam pelatihan ini adalah sebanyak 16 orang. Model pembelajaran Make A Match (Mencari Pasangan) merupakan model pembelajaran yang dikembangkan oleh Lorn Curran pada tahun 1994 di mana setiap siswa mendapat sebuah kartu (bisa soal atau jawaban) lalu secepatnya mencari pasangan yang sesuai dengan kartu yang ia pegang.  Penerapan model pembelajaran ini dimulai dengan teknik, yaitu siswa diminta mencari pasangan kartu yang merupakan jawaban atau soal sebelum batas waktunya. Siswa yang dapat mencocokan kartunya diberi poin/nilai. Adapun keuntungan menerapkan model pembelajaran Make A Match (Mencari Pasangan) adalah sebagai berikut: 1) mampu menciptakan suasana aktif dan menyenangkan; 2) materi pembelajaran yang disampaikan lebih menarik perhatian siswa; 3) mampu meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa mencapai taraf ketuntasan belajar; 4) suasana kegembiraan akan tumbuh dalam proses pembelajaran; 5) kerja sama antar siswa terwujud dengan dinamis; dan 6) munculnya dinamika gotong royong yang merata di seluruh siswa. Kegiatan ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi positif bagi masyarakat khususnya bagi siswa SD di Kelurahan Tunggurono Kota Binjai dan menciptakan kebermanfaatan antara Universitas Katolik Santo Thomas dengan masyarakat secara umum. 

    IMPROVING STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION METHOD TO THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 21 MEDAN

    This thesis discuss about Improving Students Speaking’ Achievement through the Application of Small Group Discussion Method to the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 21 Medan. The objective of the study was to find out how effective the use of Small Group Discussion Method (SGD) in teaching speaking especially in asking and giving opinion. The study of the research concentrates on the improving students’ speaking achievement by the application of small group discussion method. Specifically, it is concerned more about the students’ achievement in asking and giving opinion. The research has two cycles. Each cycle has three meetings. The subject of the research was students of Eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 21 Medan which consisted of twenty four students. The instruments of data collection were quantitative and qualitative data. While the quantitative data was conducted by pre-test, post-test I, and post-test II students’ speaking score in every cycle, the qualitative data conducted by the three instruments; observation sheet, questionnaire and diary  notes. Based on the speaking tests, students’ score improved. In the pretest, the mean of the students was 48.82. The post-test I mean 68.66 and in the post-test II the mean of the students 77.91. Based on the observation sheet, questionnaire sheet and diary notes, it was found that learning activity ran well. Most students felt interested in the process of learning activity and involved in their group during the discussion time. The result of the research showed that Small Group Discussion Method was able to improve students’ achievement in asking and giving opinion

    Enhancing Students’ Speaking Skill by Applying Think Pair Share Technique to the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Tri Sakti Lubuk Pakam

    This research was mainly conducted in order to prove that Think Pair Share Technique  could improve speaking skill of the seventh grade students of SMP Tri Sakti Lubuk Pakam and to describe their responses towards think pair share technique in the processes of learning speaking skill. The quantitative data analysis showed the mean score increase from 41,7 in Pre-test with 0% of the students got score ≥ 70, in Formative-test 49,16 with 0% of the students got score ≥ 70, and 60,52 in Post-test with 55,55% of the students got score ≥ 70. This is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research findings showed that teaching speaking skill by applying Think Pair Share Technique to the seventh grade students of SMP Tri Sakti Lubuk Pakam could improve their speaking skill. It is advisable that English teachers try applying Think Pair Share Technique in teaching speaking skil

    Bentuk-bentuk sapaan berkaitan dengan hubungan interpersonal yang ada antara penutur dan lawan bicaranya. Dalam masyarakat Batak Karo, penggunaan kata sapaan yang tepat merupakan salah satu kunci sukses dalam memulai percakapan. Penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk menemukan jenis-jenis variasi kata sapaan dan kaitannya dalam penggunaannya untuk menemukan pola pembentukan kata sapaan dalam masyarakat Batak Karo. Penelitian ini berkaitan dengan fenomena sosial, oleh karena itu metode penelitian qualitative diterapkan untuk menemukan variasi kata sapaan dalam Batak Karo, factor-faktor sosial yang mempengaruhinya, fungsi dari kata sapaan tersebut dan aturan maupun pola yang dipakai dalam kata sapaan. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hubungan kekerabatan dalam Batak Karo berdasarkan 6 tingkatan ertutur yaitu Marga/ Beru, Bere-bere, Binuang, Kempu (perkempun), Kampah and Soler.     IMPROVING STUDENTS’ SKILL IN WRITING RECOUNT TEXTS BY USING PEER REVIEW STRATEGY TO THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP KATOLIK BUDI MURNI 3 MEDAN

    The aim of this study is to improve students’ skill in writing recount texts and to find out the students’ responses after being taught by using Peer Review Strategy. The subject of the study is the students of Class VIII A of SMP Budi Murni 3 Medan in the Academic Year of 2017/2018. Questionnaire, observation sheet, field notes, and writing tests were used as the instruments for collecting data. The results of the study showed the significant improvement of the students’ skill in writing recount texts. It is proven by the students’ mean score of each test: pre-test is 64,68, formative test is 70,75 and post-test is 75,86. The progress is about 11,18 based on the students’ mean score. Moreover, the improvement could also be seen from the Minimum Mastery Criteria (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum (KKM)) which showed that the students’ score of pre-test is 20,68%, formative test is 58,62%, and post-test is 72,41%. It can be concluded that there is a significant progress of 52% based on (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum (KKM)). The students also agreed with the application of Peer Review Strategy in writing recount texts. It can be seen from the result of questionnaire that there was 60% of strongly agree and 40% of agree. Therefore, the application of Peer Review Strategy is very suitable to improve students’ skill in writing recount texts

    THE APPLICATION OF DICTOGLOSS TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL IN SMP NEGERI 31 MEDAN

    Writing is the most important human invention which provides a relatively permanent record of information, opinions, benefits, feelings, arguments, explanations, and theories. Many students are still confused how to write a text because they do not know the rules and they can not express their ideas into written form. One of the techniques to improve students’ writing skill is Dictogloss Technique. The method that is used in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subject of this research are 35 students of class VIII-4 of SMP Negeri 31 Medan in the academic year of 2018/2019. Tests, observation sheets, field notes, and questionnaire were used as the instruments for collecting the data. The result of this study showed increasing score of students’ writing descriptive text. The result of the test showed that the students’ mean score in pre-test is 60 with 0% students got score 75, in formative test the mean score is 76.71 with 60% students got score 75 and in post-test the mean score is 80.85 with 94% students got score 75. It showed that the percentage improvement of the students’ mean score from pre-test to post-test was 94%. The response of students after being taught by using Dictogloss Technique are good. The students enjoyed the process of teaching and learning. It is suggested that teachers use Dictogloss Technique in teaching writing skill to improve students’ skill in writing descriptive text.Â
