With the increasing importance attributed to intangible cultural heritage, of which music performance is an important part, public archive collections contain a growing proportion of audio and video material. Currently used models have only limited capabilities for their representation. This demo illustrates our proposal for a unified ontological model of live music recordings and associated tangible artefacts with a Web application for the exploration of live music events of the Grateful Dead

Providing patient-centric health care services is the goal of health-care institutions. However, due to human-related aspects, this goal is frequently undermined. PINATA offers an automated patient-centric system based upon Pervasive Ambience Intelligence techniques and enriched with Semantic Web technologies. The system makes use of RFID sensors to track the movements of patients and medical staff in order to direct staff effectively. An automated camera system monitors the patients and alerts hospital staff in case of emergencies. Through handheld devices hospital staff is automatically provided with relevant patient information gathered from various sources. PINATA is based on a Service Oriented Architecture and makes use of domain specific ontologies.peer-reviewe

Active document enrichment using adaptive information extraction from text

The traditional process of document annotation for knowledge identification and extraction in the Semantic Web (SW) is complex and time consuming, as it requires manual annotation by domain experts. There is currently a strong interest in Text Mining technologies (and in particular in Human Language-based Technologies), for reducing the burden of text annotation for Knowledge Management (KM). In this poster we present Melita, an annotation interface that uses Adaptive Information Extraction from texts for reducing the burden of text annotation.peer-reviewe

Multi-strategy definition of annotation services in Melita

    Get PDF
The definition of methodologies for automatic ontology-based document annotation is a fundamental step in the Semantic Web vision. In the near future, semantic annotation services could become as important as search engines are today. Tools for the easy and effective development of such services are therefore needed. In this paper, we present Melita, a tool for the definition and development of ontology-based annotation services. Melita goes beyond the dichotomy rule learning Vs rule writing of classic annotation systems, as it allows adopting different strategies, from annotating examples in a corpus for training a learner to rule writing and even a mixture of them. It also supports users in defining and maintaining an ontology for annotation and in delivering the annotation service. The result is a tool easy to use and flexible to different user needs.peer-reviewe

Learning to harvest information for the semantic web

This work was carried out within the AKT project (www.aktors.org), sponsored by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (grant GR/N15764/01), and the Dot.Kom project (www.dot-kom.org), sponsored by the EU IST asp part of Framework V (grant IST-2001-34038).In this paper we describe a methodology for harvesting in- formation from large distributed repositories (e.g. large Web sites) with minimum user intervention. The methodology is based on a combination of information extraction, information integration and machine learning techniques. Learning is seeded by extracting information from structured sources (e.g. databases and digital libraries) or a user-defined lexicon. Retrieved information is then used to partially annotate documents. An- notated documents are used to bootstrap learning for simple Information Extraction (IE) methodologies, which in turn will produce more annotation to annotate more documents that will be used to train more complex IE engines and so on. In this paper we describe the methodology and its implementation in the Armadillo system, compare it with the current state of the art, and describe the details of an implemented application. Finally we draw some conclusions and highlight some challenges and future work.peer-reviewe

The collection is linked to existing musical and geographical resources allowing for the extraction of useful or nteresting subsets of data using additional metadata. The collection is published using a ‘layered’ approach, aggregating the original information with links and specialised analyses, and forms a valuable resource for those investigating or developing audio analysis tools and workflows

User-system cooperation in document annotation based on information extraction

The process of document annotation for the Semantic Web is complex and time consuming, as it requires a great deal of manual annotation. Information extraction from texts (IE) is a technology used by some very recent systems for reducing the burden of annotation. The integration of IE systems in annotation tools is quite a new development and there is still the necessity of thinking the impact of the IE system on the whole annotation process. In this paper we initially discuss a number of requirements for the use of IE as support for annotation. Then we present and discuss a model of interaction that addresses such issues and Melita, an annotation framework that implements a methodology for active annotation for the Semantic Web based on IE. Finally we present an experiment that quantifies the gain in using IE as support to human annotators.peer-reviewe

    An Architecture for Personal

    No full text
The semantic Web and Web service technologies have provided both new possibilities and challenges to automatic information processing. There are a lot of researches on applying these new technologies into current personal Web information retrieval systems, but no research addresses the semantic issues from the whole life cycle and architecture point of view. Web services provide a new way for accessing Web resources, but until now, they have been managed separately from traditional Web contents resources. In this poster, we propose a conceptual architecture for a personal semantic Web information retrieval system. It incorporates semantic Web, Web services and multi-agent technologies to enable not only precise location of Web resources but also the automatic or semi-automatic integration of hybrid Web contents and Web services
