Written report in learning geometry: explanation and argumentation

    Get PDF
In this article, we examine how the written report, within the context of assessment for learning, helps students in learning geometry and in developing their explanation and argumentation skills. We present the results of a qualitative case study involving Portuguese students of the 8th grade. This study suggests that using written reports improves those capabilities and, therefore, the comprehension of geometric concepts and processes. These benefits for learning are enhanced through the implementation of some assessment strategies, namely oral and written feedback

    Self-assessment in written reports

This article studies the development of students’ self-assessment skill in the context of written reports in Mathematics. In particular, we present an interpretative case study, which involved two thirteen year old students from the 8th schooling year and six reports, written in two different stages and supported by assessment strategies at the teacher´s responsibility. The study suggests that, in each case, the student´ self-assessment skill evolves gradually but differentially. The study also suggests that the student´s appropriation of the assessment criteria is still under development and that self-assessment is, mostly, operated by students as a process that includes monitoring and excludes action

Addressing Disparity: A Waiting Room Intervention for Preeclampsia Prevention in African Americans

    Get PDF
Maternal mortality is a pressing, global concern that particularly affects African American women in the United States. African American women face disproportionately a high maternal mortality rate (MMR), with rates more than double that of white women. Preeclampsia emerges as the leading cause of maternal mortality in African American women, driving the need for targeted interventions. To address this issue, a proposed research study aims to investigate the impact of a nurse-led, waiting room, preeclampsia and aspirin effectiveness educational intervention on the knowledge and preeclampsia rates among African American women. The study draws upon existing evidence that supports the use of low-dose aspirin in preventing preeclampsia. A thorough literature review explores the effectiveness of aspirin in preventing preeclampsia and the impact of educational interventions on women\u27s knowledge and awareness of the condition. This potential study empowers healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, who play a vital role in reducing maternal mortality rates and addressing health disparities among pregnant African American women in the United States

Teacher efficacy and its relationship to classroom management style among secondary school teachers of Kigali city, Rwanda

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine relationship between each level of teacher efficacy and different components of classroom management style (instructional management, people management and behavior management).  This study investigated whether or not teachers are differing in classroom management styles and level of efficacy with reference to their gender.  One hundred and fifty teachers completed a standard teacher efficacy scale developed by Anita and Hoy (1990) and Attitude and Belief on Classroom control Inventory (ABCC) developed by Martin, Yin and Bardwin.(1997). Te results of the study revealed that the whole teacher efficacy had direct influence over classroom management, where as the teacher efficacy increased, Classroom management also increased linearly and significantly. It has been also found that male teachers were found to have higher levels on management than female teachers except for behavioral management and finally, most of the gender differences existed in the low teacher efficacy levels on management scores

Personal pronouns Ité as politeness marker in Manggarai language and culture, Indonesia

    Get PDF
Culture is about human existence and the way of life, while language is about the communication system between people in a particular society or community. Language use usually reflects the habits of society, the way of thinking, the work of the brain, the history of society, and the internal relationship in society. The use of personal pronoun inclusive we ité in Manggarai language helps speakers find out the relationship between linguistic aspects and cultural values. Based on these arguments, this study aims to analyze the relationship between the two aspects that are being addressed. The data were collected through observations and interviews of the ten traditional spokespersons, then analyzed qualitatively. The finding indicates that the use of ité in all of its forms reflects the etiquette of people in Manggarai, Indonesia. Referring to the data stated, this study, therefore, concludes that the first personal pronoun plural inclusive we ité, in Manggarai language and culture demonstrates the speaker's politeness and humility in front of the hearer or listener; the speaker truly respects the interlocutor; to convey high regard for the interlocutor in a high position; to prove tribute, respect, and admiration; to show intimacy, closeness, and fraternity in the social relationship; and to show a great homage to Supreme Being
