A FABRY-PEROT CAVITY FOR COMPTON POLARIMETRY
A new kind of Compton polarimeter using a resonant Fabry—Pe« rot cavity as a power buildup for the photon beam is proposed. A prototype of such a cavity is described, along with the results obtained in terms of source to be used in a Compton scattering polarimeter. ( 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved
Josephson Coupling and Fiske Dynamics in Ferromagnetic Tunnel Junctions
We report on the fabrication of Nb/AlO_x/Pd_{0.82}Ni_{0.18}/Nb
superconductor/insulator/ferromagnetic metal/superconductor (SIFS) Josephson
junctions with high critical current densities, large normal resistance times
area products, high quality factors, and very good spatial uniformity. For
these junctions a transition from 0- to \pi-coupling is observed for a
thickness d_F ~ 6 nm of the ferromagnetic Pd_{0.82}Ni_{0.18} interlayer. The
magnetic field dependence of the \pi-coupled junctions demonstrates good
spatial homogeneity of the tunneling barrier and ferromagnetic interlayer.
Magnetic characterization shows that the Pd_{0.82}Ni_{0.18} has an out-of-plane
anisotropy and large saturation magnetization, indicating negligible dead
layers at the interfaces. A careful analysis of Fiske modes provides
information on the junction quality factor and the relevant damping mechanisms
up to about 400 GHz. Whereas losses due to quasiparticle tunneling dominate at
low frequencies, the damping is dominated by the finite surface resistance of
the junction electrodes at high frequencies. High quality factors of up to 30
around 200 GHz have been achieved. Our analysis shows that the fabricated
junctions are promising for applications in superconducting quantum circuits or
quantum tunneling experiments.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure

Slaughtering, evisceration and cooling conditions of force-fed geese have an important impact on the quality and weight of “foie gras”. Before slaughtering, the animals must fast to maintain a low bacteriological count in the liver. However, an extended fasting period between the last force-feeding meal and time of slaughter can lead to a large loss in liver weight and also an alteration of its physical qualities by raising the melting point of the fat. The optimum fasting period is probably of the order of 12 hours. Rapid refrigeration of “foie gras”, immediatly after slaughtering the force-fed geese is necessary to limit melting of lipids. This is especially important for larger livers (livers weighing between 600 and 900 grams). Evisceration immediately after slaughtering eliminates the possibility of intestinal contamination, and quick refrigeration of the removed liver leads to a better quality liver. To implement this technique perfect control of bacteriological conditions is essential
A CONTROL SYSTEM FOR CRYOGENIC INSTALLATIONS
A modular control system has been developped for the automatization of cryogenic systems. The hardware has been built around a microprocessor ; conventional and spectific modules for cryogenic applications have been developped. A special software has also been written, the first aim of which being an easy writing and modifying ot the process control by the users. The prototype of this system has been operated for more than a year. The system is now commercially available ; it has been used and is under consideration for several cryogenic projects in which the laboratory is involved
The static and dynamic behaviour of two metal-matrix (Al-Cu 2124 and Al-Li 8090) composite materials, reinforced by particulate SiC have been studied under torsion and tension in the temperature range 25 to 550°C. All the dynamic tests are based on the SHPB technique. The tests show that the strain rate has an obvious influence on the maximum deformation and a smaller influence on the strength at fracture for the two materials. For temperatures lower than 250°C, the strength and the ductility remain almost constant. They decrease at high temperature (> 250°C). The effects of strain rate and temperature on the behaviour is same for both tension and torsion
