    Banking from Leeds, not London: regional strategy and structure at the Yorkshire Bank, 1859–1952

    Industrial philanthropist Edward Akroyd created the Yorkshire Penny Savings Bank in 1859. Despite competition from the Post Office Savings Bank after 1861 and a serious reserve problem in 1911, it sustained his overall strategy to become a successful regional bank. Using archival and contemporary sources to build on recent scholarship illustrating how savings banks were integrated into local economies and the complementary roles of philanthropy and paternalism, we analyse an English regional bank's strategy, including an assessment of strategic innovation, ownership changes and management structure. This will demonstrate that the founder's vision continued, even though the 1911 crisis radically altered both strategy and structure

    Microstructure and magnetic properties of as-quenched and heat-treated (Nd,Dy)FeB powders produced by high pressure gas atomization

    The magnetic properties and microstructures of a series of as-quenched and heat-treated inert gas atomized (IGA) rare-earth rich (Nd,Dy)–Fe–B particles have been investigated. Heat treatment was found to substantially improve magnetic properties, with effects most pronounced in samples with higher Dy content and higher total rare earth (RE) content. The as-quenched particles consisted of an underquenched dendritic-like structure with the majority phase RE2Fe14B, and a fine network of RE-rich material between the grains. The heat-treated particles showed a change in microstructure which correlated with magnetic property changes. Particles which showed little change in magnetic properties showed no obvious change in microstructure. Particles which showed large changes in magnetic properties showed a large change in microstructure: most of the fine network of RE-rich interdendritic material disappeared, leaving behind only a few small isolated regions. This would seem to indicate that the predominant mechanism determining coercivity in these IGA RE-rich (Nd,Dy)–Fe–B powers is nucleation of reverse domains, rather than domain wall pinning at nonmagnetic intergranular material

    Bistable molecular conductors with a field-switchable dipole group

    A class of bistable "stator-rotor" molecules is proposed, where a stationary bridge (stator) connects the two electrodes and facilitates electron transport between them. The rotor part, which has a large dipole moment, is attached to an atom of the stator via a single sigma bond. Hydrogen bonds formed between the rotor and stator make the symmetric orientation of the dipole unstable. The rotor has two potential minima with equal energy for rotation about the sigma bond. The dipole orientation, which determines the conduction state of the molecule, can be switched by an external electric field that changes the relative energy of the two potential minima. Both orientation of the rotor correspond to asymmetric current-voltage characteristics that are the reverse of each other, so they are distinguishable electrically. Such bistable stator-rotor molecules could potentially be used as parts of molecular electronic devices.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

    Performance and Carcass Traits of Market Beef Cattle Supplemented Self-Fed Byproducts on Pasture: Final Report

    Over a two year period (2007 and 2008), 162 head of beef steers were finished with self-fed byproducts on cool season grass pastures. Yearling steers were continuously grazed at the Neely-Kinyon Farm in southwest Iowa on cool season grasses that were predominantly fescue at a stocking density of 2.25 head/acre. Half of the cattle were implanted (with Synovex®-S) or half were not. Cattle received a diet of either soyhulls-dried distillers grain with solubles (DDGS) or ground corn-dried distillers grains with solubles that was offered through self-feeders. The rations were mixed at a 1:1 ratio with a mineral balancer added which included Rumensin®. Live cattle performance and carcass traits were not affected by diet. Implanted cattle outgained non-implanted over the entire finishing period (3.52 lbs/d vs. 3.17 lbs/d). This led to implanted cattle coming off test heavier (1324 lbs vs. 1277 lbs) and railing with heavier carcasses (826 lbs vs. 800 lbs). Ribeye areas were greater (13.1 in2 vs. 12.7 in2) for implanted cattle; which was probably due to the heavier carcass weights. Non-implanted cattle had superior quality grades (55% vs. 40%) of low choice or better. Fatty acid profiles from the first year were analyzed and showed that raw beef samples from cattle on the soyhulls diet had significantly higher C18:2 In conclusion, pasture rearing cattle, when given access to self-fed by-products, provides for excellent performance on both live performance and carcass traits. Some considerations should be made by the feeder in regards to time of year when marketing cattle and the cattle’s genetics. This system is an alternative to high-grain conventional beef finishing production in feedlots

    An Investigation of the Role of Radiative and Nonradiative Recombination Processes in InAs/GaAs 1−x Sb x Quantum Dot Solar Cells

    An InAs/GaAs0.86 Sb 0.14 quantum dot solar cell and a GaAsSb control cell were investigated using temperature-dependent current density–voltage (J–V), external quantum efficiency, photoluminescence (PL), and electroluminescence (EL) measurements. Thermally activated defect states associated with the GaAsSb matrix material are found to account for the reduction of the performance of the solar cell. The rapid quenching of the PL and EL intensity, along with the shift (above 150 K) of the dominant recombination process during spontaneous emission (EL), further indicates the prevalence of nonradiative processes at elevated temperatures in these systems. These findings are also supported by a reduction in the open-circuit voltage at elevated temperatures in these devices

    Radiation tolerance of GaAs1-xSbx solar cells

    High radiation tolerance of GaAs1-xSbx based solar cells is demonstrated for the low-intensity-low-temperature (LILT) conditions of the target planets Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars. The GaAs1-xSbx-based cells are irradiated with high energy electrons to assess the effect of harsh radiation environment on the solar cell and the response of the cell is then investigated in terms of its photovoltaic operation. This system shows significant radiation resistance to the high energy electron environment for the conditions of the planets of interest. An unusual increase of the short circuit current after irradiation is observed at low temperature, which is supported by a simultaneous increase in the external quantum efficiency of the cell under the same conditions. The open circuit voltage and fill factor of the cell are especially tolerant to irradiation, which is also reflected in unchanged dark current-voltage characteristics of the solar cell upon irradiation particularly at LILT

    The high radiation tolerance of GaAs0.86Sb0.14 based solar cells with a band gap suitable for PV is demonstrated at the low intensity low temperature (LILT) conditions. This system shows remarkable radiation hardness at AM0, and more prominently, at the conditions of several outer planetary targets. This is attributed to an irradiation induced change in the absorber band gap due to local heating and strain relaxation, and the generation of less prohibitive shallow Sb-based defects in the GaAs 1-x Sb x absorber

    Quality of care in adult patients with inflammatory bowel disease transferring between healthcare providers: multicentre audit

    Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) predominantly affects young adults at critical socioeconomic periods of their lives. There are no studies examining the process of transfer of care for adult patients with IBD changing healthcare providers. Our aims were to assess the quality of referral information provided when patients with an established IBD diagnosis transfer care between heathcare providers and to assess the impact of referral quality on patient outcome. / Methods: Retrospective data pertaining to IBD transfer of care referrals were collected from 16 hospitals across London over a 2-month period. Data were collected on patient demographics, source and content of referral and cross-referenced with an established transfer of care checklist. Patient outcome within the 6 months following transfer was also documented. / Results: 154 cases were identified, over half of which transferred due to patient relocation. Details included in transfer letters were in many cases incomplete. In over 70% of cases, the letter came from primary care, including when a tertiary opinion was sought. Although referrals from primary care contained fewer patient data points, there was no association with poor patient outcomes at 6 months. / Conclusion: This is the first study examining the quality of transfer of care in adult patients with IBD. We highlighted a significant and underreported issue and found that the majority of referrals were led by primary care. Though the inclusion in the referral of fewer data points was not associated with poor outcomes, we highlighted an area where gastroenterologists might take more responsibility to provide smooth and robust transfer of care

Some considerations should be made by the feeder in regards to time of year when marketing cattle and the cattle’s genetics.
