Studies at Oyster Bay in Jamaica, West Indies. III. Measurements of underwater-sunlight spectra
Spectral distributions of ambient underwater sunlight in Oyster Bay, Falmouth Harbor, Jamaica, West Indies, have been measured during the diurnal rise in the stimulable bioluminescent intensity of the marine dinoflagellate, Pyrodinium bahamense. In addition to the changes in light intensity during this period, there are large changes in the relative spectral distributions, as functions of both time and depth in the Bay. Biological and physical observations on a phosphorescent bay in Falmouth Harbor, Jamaica, W. I.
A general description of a phosphorescent bay on the northern shore of Jamaica, West Indies, is presented. The brilliant bioluminescence in this embayment is due to the large armored dinoflagellate, Pyrodinium bahamense. It was found in cell densities as high as 200,000 cells/liter. Long-lifetime, reliable liquid metal ion sources for boron, arsenic, and phosphorus
Operation of liquid–metalion sources based on palladium alloys that contain boron, arsenic, and phosphorus (singly or in combination) was studied. These sources, when run on refractory metal needles and heater ribbons, have exhibited high angular intensity (1.5–5 μA/sr), long lifetime (\u3e150 h), low energy spread (eV), and stable operation with extracted currents down to 2 μA
Perfect magnetohydrodynamics as a field theory
We propose the generally covariant action for the theory of a self-coupled
complex scalar field and electromagnetism which by virtue of constraints is
equivalent, in the regime of long wavelengths, to perfect magnetohydrodynamics
(MHD). We recover from it the Euler equation with Lorentz force, and the
thermodynamic relations for a prefect fluid. The equation of state of the
latter is related to the scalar field's self potential. We introduce 1+3
notation to elucidate the relation between MHD and field variables. In our
approach the requirement that the scalar field be single valued leads to the
quantization of a certain circulation in steps of ; this feature leads,
in the classical limit, to the conservation of that circulation. The
circulation is identical to that in Oron's generalization of Kelvin's
circulation theorem to perfect MHD; we here characterize the new conserved
helicity associated with it. We also demonstrate the existence for MHD of two
Bernoulli-like theorems for each spacetime symmetry of the flow and geometry;
one of these is pertinent to suitably defined potential flow. We exhibit the
conserved quantities explicitly in the case that two symmetries are
simultaneously present, and give examples. Also in this case we exhibit a new

Supramolecular synthon pattern in solid clioquinol and cloxiquine (APIs of antibacterial, antifungal, antiaging and antituberculosis drugs) studied by 35Cl NQR, 1H-17O and 1H-14N NQDR and DFT/QTAIM
The quinolinol derivatives clioquinol (5-chloro-7-iodo-8-quinolinol, Quinoform) and cloxiquine (5-chloro-8-quinolinol) were studied experimentally in the solid state via 35Cl NQR, 1H-17O and 1H-14N NQDR spectroscopies, and theoretically by density functional theory (DFT). The supramolecular synthon pattern of O–H···N hydrogen bonds linking dimers and π–π stacking interactions were described within the QTAIM (quantum theory of atoms in molecules) /DFT (density functional theory) formalism. Both proton donor and acceptor sites in O–H···N bonds were characterized using 1H-17O and 1H-14N NQDR spectroscopies and QTAIM. The possibility of the existence of O–H···H–O dihydrogen bonds was excluded. The weak intermolecular interactions in the crystals of clioquinol and cloxiquine were detected and examined. The results obtained in this work suggest that considerable differences in the NQR parameters for the planar and twisted supramolecular synthons permit differentiation between specific polymorphic forms, and indicate that the more planar supramolecular synthons are accompanied by a greater number of weaker hydrogen bonds linking them and stronger π···π stacking interactions

Cardiac Biomarkers and Risk of Atrial Fibrillation in Chronic Kidney Disease: The CRIC Study.
Background We tested associations of cardiac biomarkers of myocardial stretch, injury, inflammation, and fibrosis with the risk of incident atrial fibrillation (AF) in a prospective study of chronic kidney disease patients. Methods and Results The study sample was 3053 participants with chronic kidney disease in the multicenter CRIC (Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort) study who were not identified as having AF at baseline. Cardiac biomarkers, measured at baseline, were NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide), high-sensitivity troponin T, galectin-3, growth differentiation factor-15, and soluble ST-2. Incident AF ("AF event") was defined as a hospitalization for AF. During a median follow-up of 8 years, 279 (9%) participants developed a new AF event. In adjusted models, higher baseline log-transformed NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide) was associated with incident AF (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] per SD higher concentration: 2.11; 95% CI, 1.75, 2.55), as was log-high-sensitivity troponin T (HR 1.42; 95% CI, 1.20, 1.68). These associations showed a dose-response relationship in categorical analyses. Although log-soluble ST-2 was associated with AF risk in continuous models (HR per SD higher concentration 1.35; 95% CI, 1.16, 1.58), this association was not consistent in categorical analyses. Log-galectin-3 (HR 1.05; 95% CI, 0.91, 1.22) and log-growth differentiation factor-15 (HR 1.16; 95% CI, 0.96, 1.40) were not significantly associated with incident AF. Conclusions We found strong associations between higher NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide) and high-sensitivity troponin T concentrations, and the risk of incident AF in a large cohort of participants with chronic kidney disease. Increased atrial myocardial stretch and myocardial cell injury may be implicated in the high burden of AF in patients with chronic kidney disease
Supernatants from lymphocytes stimulated with Bacillus Calmette-Guerin can modify the antigenicity of tumours and stimulate allogeneic T-cell responses
BACKGROUND: Reduced expression of class 1 human leucocyte antigens (HLA1) is often a mechanism by which tumours evade surveillance by the host immune system. This is often associated with an immune function that is unable to mount appropriate responses against disease, which can result in a state that favours carcinogenesis. METHODS: In the current study, we have explored the effects of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) on the cytokine output of leucocytes, which is a key determinant in generating antitumour action, and have also assessed the effect of these cytokine cocktails on HLA1 expression in solid tumour cell lines. RESULTS: BCG potently activated a broad range of leucocytes, and also enhanced the production of cytokines that were Th(1)-predominant. Supernatants from BCG-treated leucocytes significantly increased the expression of HLA1 on the surface of cancer cell lines, which correlated with increased cytolytic T-cell activity. We also showed that the increased HLA1 expression was associated with activation of intracellular signalling pathways, which was triggered by the increases in the Th(1)-cytokines interferon-γ and tumour necrosis factor-α, as counteracting their effects negated the enhancement. CONCLUSION: These studies reaffirm the role of BCG as a putative immunotherapy through their cytokine-modifying effects on leucocytes and their capacity to enhance tumour visibility
A comparison of repaired, remanufactured and new compressors used in Western Australian small- and medium-sized enterprises in terms of global warming
Repaired compressors are compared with remanufactured and new compressors in terms of economic andenvironmental benefits. A detailed life cycle assessment has been carried out for compressors under threemanufacturing strategies: repaired, remanufactured and new equipment. The life cycle assessment of the globalwarming potential of repaired compressors varies from 4.38 to 119 kg carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e),depending on the type of components replaced. While greenhouse gas emissions from the remanufacturedcompressors (110 to 168 kg CO2-e) are relatively higher than those from the repaired ones (4.4 to 119 kg CO2-e), anew compressor has been found to produce a larger amount of greenhouse gas emissions (1,590 kg CO2-e)compared to both repaired and remanufactured compressors. Repairing failed compressors has been found to offerend users both dollar and carbon savings in contrast to remanufactured and new compressors. The research alsofound that extended lifetime is more important than the manufacturing processes in terms of greenhouse gasemissions. Since a remanufactured compressor offers a longer life than a repaired compressor, the replacement ofthe latter with the former can avoid 33% to 66% of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with a newcompressor production with a lifetime of 15 to 25 years
