    Multiple roles of photosynthetic and sunscreen pigments in cyanobacteria focusing on the oxidative stress

    Cyanobacteria have two types of sunscreen pigments, scytonemin and mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs). These secondary metabolites are thought to play multiple roles against several environmental stresses such as UV radiation and desiccation. Not only the large molar absorption coefficients of these sunscreen pigments, but also their antioxidative properties may be necessary for the protection of biological molecules against the oxidative damages induced by UV radiation. The antioxidant activity and vitrification property of these pigments are thought to be requisite for the desiccation and rehydration processes in anhydrobiotes. In this review, the multiple roles of photosynthetic pigments and sunscreen pigments on stress resistance, especially from the viewpoint of their structures, biosynthetic pathway, and in vitro studies of their antioxidant activity, will be discussed. © 2013 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland

    ASTE CO(3-2) Observations of the Barred Spiral Galaxy M 83: I. Correlation between CO(3-2)/CO(1-0) Ratios and Star Formation Efficiencies

    We present CO(J=3-2) emission observations with the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) toward the 5' x 5' (or 6.6 x 6.6 kpc at the distance D = 4.5 Mpc) region of the nearby barred spiral galaxy M 83. We successfully resolved the major structures, i.e., the nuclear starburst region, bar, and inner spiral arms in CO(J=3-2) emission at a resolution of 22'' (or 480 pc), showing a good spatial coincidence between CO(J=3-2) and 6 cm continuum emissions. We found a global CO(J=3-2) luminosity L'_CO(3-2) of 5.1 x 10^8 K km s^-1 pc^2 within the observed region. We also found L'_CO(3-2) in the disk region (0.5 < r < 3.5 kpc) of 4.2 x 10^8 K km s^-1 pc^2, indicating that CO(J=3-2) emission in the disk region significantly contributes to the global L'_CO(3-2). From a comparison of a CO(J=3-2) data with CO(J=1-0) intensities measured with Nobeyama 45-m telescope, we found that the radial profile of CO(J=3-2)/CO(J=1-0) integrated intensity ratio R_3-2/1-0 is almost unity in the central region (r < 0.25 kpc), whereas it drops to a constant value, 0.6--0.7, in the disk region. The radial profile of star formation efficiencies (SFEs), determined from 6 cm radio continuum and CO(J=1-0) emission, shows the same trend as that of R_3-2/1-0. At the bar-end (r ~ 2.4 kpc), the amounts of molecular gas and the massive stars are enhanced when compared with other disk regions, whereas there is no excess of R_3-2/1-0 and SFE in that region. This means that a simple summation of the star forming regions at the bar-end and the disk cannot reproduce the nuclear starburst of M 83, implying that the spatial variation of the dense gas fraction traced by R_3-2/1-0 governs the spatial variation of SFE in M 83.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, PASJ in press, version with high resolution figures is available via http://www.nro.nao.ac.jp/~z5001km/m83-aste.pd

    Children with unilateral aural atresia

    The effects of FM system fitted into the normal hearing ear (NHE) or a cartilage conduction hearing aid (CCHA) fitted into the affected ear (AE) on the speech recognition ability in noise were examined in children with unilateral congenital aural atresia (UCAA). In children with bilateral normal hearing (BNH), speech recognition score (SRS) was significantly decreased in the noisy environment of -5 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), compared with those in quiet. In children with UCAA, SRS was significantly decreased in noisy environments of 0 and -5 dB SNR, compared with those in quiet. In noisy environments of 0 and -5 dB SNR, SRS in children with UCAA was significantly decreased, compared those in children with BNH. In the noisy environment of -5 dB SNR, SRS in UCAA children aided by FM system fitted into NHE was significantly better than those in unaided children in the same group. In the noisy environment of 0 dB SNR, SRS in UCAA children aided by CCHA into AE tended to be higher than those in unaided children in the same group. FM system and CCHA can be recommended as an audiological management for the improvement of speech recognition in children with UCHL in classrooms

    Aperture Synthesis CO(J=1-0) Observations and Near-Infrared Photometry of the Non-Barred Seyfert Galaxy NGC 5033

    Aperture synthesis observations of CO(J=1-0) emission and near-infrared broad-band photometry of the non-barred Seyfert galaxy NGC 5033 (D = 18.7 Mpc) were performed. Our 3".9 x 3".6 resolution CO observations reveal a perturbed distribution and the kinematics of molecular gas in the center of NGC 5033; we find the characteristic gaseous features that are widely observed in barred spiral galaxies, such as two bright CO peaks near the center (separated by ~ 3'' or 270 pc from the nucleus), two offset ridges of CO emission emanating from the CO peaks, and a CO ring (with a radius of ~ 14'' or 1.3 kpc). Double-peaked velocity profiles are also evident near the two CO peaks, implying that these CO peaks are orbit crowding zones in a barred/oval potential. Although NIR data only give an upper limit of the possible bar lengths, due to a large inclination of the NGC 5033 disk (i = 68 deg), our CO data clearly suggests the presence of a small (the semi-major axis of about 12'' - 15'' or 1.1 - 1.4 kpc) nuclear bar (or oval structure) in the center of the ``non-barred'' galaxy NGC 5033. Our results demonstrate that high-resolution CO imaging-spectroscopy is useful to search for nuclear bars, even in highly inclined systems where isophoto fitting techniques are not applicable. We find that the gas mass-to-dynamical mass ratio, M_gas/M_dyn, is small (< 1%) within a radius of 2'' or 180 pc, in contrast to starburst nuclei. This implies that the starburst does not cohabitate in the type-1.5 Seyfert nucleus of N GC 5033.Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ.     Novel glycosylated mycosporine-like amino acids with radical scavenging activity from the cyanobacterium Nostoc commune

    Mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) are UV absorbing pigments, and structurally distinct MAAs have been identified in taxonomically diverse organisms. Two novel MAAs were purified from the cyanobacterium Nostoc commune, and their chemical structures were characterized. An MAA with an absorption maximum at 335 nm was identified as a pentose-bound porphyra-334 derivative with a molecular mass of 478 Da. Another identified MAA had double absorption maxima at 312 and 340 nm and a molecular mass of 1050 Da. Its unique structure consisted of two distinct chromophores of 3-aminocyclohexen-1-one and 1,3-diaminocyclohexen and two pentose and hexose sugars. These MAAs had radical scavenging activity in vitro; the 1050-Da MAA contributed approximately 27% of the total radical scavenging activities in a water extract of N. commune. These results suggest that these glycosylated MAAs have multiple roles as a UV protectant and an antioxidant relevant to anhydrobiosis in N. commune. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    Glycosylated porphyra-334 and palythine-threonine from the terrestrial cyanobacterium nostoc commune

    Mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) are water-soluble UV-absorbing pigments, and structurally different MAAs have been identified in eukaryotic algae and cyanobacteria. In this study novel glycosylated MAAs were found in the terrestrial cyanobacterium Nostoc commune (N. commune). An MAA with an absorption maximum at 334 nm was identified as a hexose-bound porphyra-334 derivative with a molecular mass of 508 Da. Another MAA with an absorption maximum at 322 nm was identified as a two hexose-bound palythine-threonine derivative with a molecular mass of 612 Da. These purified MAAs have radical scavenging activities in vitro, which suggests multifunctional roles as sunscreens and antioxidants. The 612-Da MAA accounted for approximately 60% of the total MAAs and contributed approximately 20% of the total radical scavenging activities in a water extract, indicating that it is the major water-soluble UV-protectant and radical scavenger component. The hexose-bound porphyra-334 derivative and the glycosylated palythine-threonine derivatives were found in a specific genotype of N. commune, suggesting that glycosylated MAA patterns could be a chemotaxonomic marker for the characterization of the morphologically indistinguishable N. commune. The glycosylation of porphyra-334 and palythine-threonine in N. commune suggests a unique adaptation for terrestrial environments that are drastically fluctuating in comparison to stable aquatic environments. © 2013 by the authors

    Characterization of the chemical diversity of glycosylated mycosporine-like amino acids in the terrestrial cyanobacterium Nostoc commune

    Mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) are UV-absorbing pigments, and structurally unique glycosylated MAAs are found in the terrestrial cyanobacterium Nostoc commune. In this study, we examined two genotypes of N. commune colonies with different water extract UV-absorption spectra. We found structurally distinct MAAs in each genotype. The water extract from genotype A showed a UV-absorbing spectrum with an absorption maximum at 335 nm. The extract contained the following compounds: 7-O-(β-arabinopyranosyl)-porphyra-334 (478 Da), pentose-bound shinorine (464 Da), hexose-bound porphyra-334 (508 Da) and porphyra-334 (346 Da). The water extract from genotype B showed a characteristic UV-absorbing spectrum with double absorption maxima at 312 and 340 nm. The extract contained hybrid MAAs (1050 Da and 880 Da) with two distinct chromophores of 3-aminocyclohexen-1-one and 1,3-diaminocyclohexen linked to 2-O-(β-xylopyranosyl)-β-galactopyranoside. A novel 273-Da MAA with an absorption maximum at 310 nm was also identified in genotype B. The MAA consisted of a 3-aminocyclohexen-1-one linked to a γ-aminobutyric acid chain. These MAAs had potent radical scavenging activities in vitro and the results confirmed that the MAAs have multiple roles as a UV protectant and an antioxidant relevant to anhydrobiosis in N. commune. The two genotypes of N. commune exclusively produced their own characteristic glycosylated MAAs, which supports that MAA composition could be a chemotaxonomic marker for the classification of N. commune
