    Get PDF

Background: Sport management in municipalities has an enormous importance and is becoming increasingly complex, requiring specific and robust skills from sport managers. The discussion about the role of sport managers has gained increasing importance within scientific research in sport, being crucial to possess essential knowledge and skills to act efficiently and effectively in increasingly complex and differentiated contexts, based on academic training. Approach: This study aims to deepen the knowledge about managers and municipal officials with responsibilities in sports by identifying the socio-demographic profile, professionals with specific training in sport management and its perceived value in the improvement of skills. Methods: Methodologically, it is a descriptive quantitative study of exploratory nature, data were collected in a universe of 308 Portuguese municipalities through a questionnaire survey, obtaining 433 valid responses from 302 municipalities (98% representativeness). Results: The results revealed that managers are mainly male (74,5%), as are the municipal officials (73,6%), both are aged between 41-49 (51,3% and 54,4%) and have a degree, with the first having specialised in physical education (34,0%) and sport (32,0%) and the second in other non-sport areas (55,2%). Despite the low level of academic training in sport management (10,0% and 8,0%), both consider this expertise important in improving professional skills and practices (>80,0% and >75,0%). Conclusion: We conclude that there is an unequivocal appreciation of sport management training as a tool for improving management and leadership skills, making it imperative to analyse the fields of intervention in which it distinguishes itself. Universities have made enormous progress in adapting their academic curriculum to the needs of contemporary sport management, however, there are still very few professionals working in this area with specialized training. This scenario also makes it imperative to understand why current managers do not seek specialized training and/or if the existing training in universities offers a guarantee of a successful practice in sports organizations

Understanding the Predictors of Economic Politics on Elite Sport: A Case Study from Spain

Sport federations (NSFs) are the main promoters of sport at a national level. Their complex management involves coordinating relations with private entities, public administrations, and international organisations. Therefore, the economic situation of a country and its sport support policies have significant influences on the achievement of the NSFs’ objectives and, therefore, on their sustainability and influence on an active population. This study analyses the determinants of the financial performance of 59 Spanish sport federations (SSFs), 28 Olympic and 31 non-Olympic, based on the relationship between the funding received and their international results during the period from 2007 to 2019 (both years included). The preliminary data analysis included an examination of the missing data, and a t-test was used to compare Olympic and non-Olympic sport federations regarding different variables related to their resources and results. In addition, multiple linear regressions identified the possible predictors of the financing of sport federations and were separately performed for Olympic and non-Olympic federations. The results showed that SSFs were able to maintain their results in the face of decreasing resources. In addition, Olympic SSFs were found to be less dependent on public funding than non-Olympic SSFs for competitive results. This is evidence of a paradigm shift in the management of Spanish federated sports, evolving towards a model that is less dependent on the state, more efficient, and therefore more sustainable.Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sport-Salvador de Madariaga PRX 16/0036

The Environmental Impact of Major Sport Events (Giga, Mega and Major): A Systematic Review from 2000 to 2021

    Get PDF
In the context of the Sustainable Development Goals interest and concerns about the environmental impact of major sporting events have become increasingly widespread, voiced not only by organizers, but also spectators and residents of affected areas, as well politicians and institutional representatives of the host territories. There are multiple studies of the economic, social, and legal impacts of major sport events. Although several studies have pointed to a range of environmental impacts, there is no clear consensus on the effects that a major event can have on the natural environment. Thus, the aim of this article is to carry out a systematic review of the state of the art. Following the steps proposed by the PRISMA protocol, a selection of scientific articles from between 2000 and 2021 was made. The overall analysis shows that the negatives outweigh the positives, as only 32.91% of the effects described in the articles are deemed to be positive, with 62.03% deemed to be negative, and finally, 5.06% found to be inconclusive. With varying degrees of success, organizers and promoters of major events are already attempting measures to reduce negative impacts and enhance positive ones
